Christens torturing Hindu families in Rasayni, Maharashtra

December 18, 2008

Margashirsha Krushna Saptami

Panvel (Maharashtra): Hindu family in Rasayni, is being tortured by christen missionaries in that area. (Congress government in center and state are supporting to the anti – Hindu activities by Christian and Muslims everywhere. That is why except Hindus all other religions and sectors are becoming very powerful and aggressive in the country where majority population is Hindu. So no one can deny the fact that every Hindu should come together and get united to stop assaults on our great tradition and religion! – Editor)

But police started taking action against Shiv Sainiks who protected this Hindu family. But police threaten Shiv Sainik about minority commission. (Ahh! Now it's a crime to ask question about the injustice and attacks happening on your religion. The congress government is responsible for the terrib They fired their daughters from school. This was not enough so the Christian missionaries cut the water and electricity supply. (This is the real face of Christians! – Editor)

Shiv Sena leaders Anagha Kanitkar, Shri Bhai Shinde, Shri Harishchandra Patil along with many Shiv Sainik met Shetty family after they came to know about the incident. Delegation of Shiv Sena activists then went to missionary school, where they found no picture of our national hero in the school. (Muslims are dreaming to make this country Islamic and Christians are trying day and night to convert the whole Bharat into Christianity. Dear Hindus what are you doing to keep your tradition and religion alive? – Editor

The symbol of Christianity cross were the only thing which you could see everywhere. Delegation also noticed that ignoring rules and regulations of government this school was running their own Christian missionary educational system. The delegation also met pastor of the institution. He also admitted his mistake and took the girls back into school, he also accepted to run the school as per government norms and regulations. But as soon as Shiv Sena activist left this place, the pastor ran to police and lodged complain against Shiv Sainiks. (Police are least bothered when some Hindu go to lodge any complain against some Muslim or Christian. But here some Christian person is lodging complain so the police immediately lodged complain without knowing the facts. Hindus are getting step motherly treatment in their own county. So it won't be surprising if Hindus sentiments got stimulated some day! – Editor)

Earlier police didn't even bother to take action against this school after repeated complains. But police officer Pravinkumar Tiwari called Anagha Kanitkar, Shri Harishchandra Patil and Bhai Shinde to police station after the pastor complained against these Shiv Sainiks. (People!! why are we still tolerating and thriving such blasphemy police force.  We can put such unrighteous police on trial; those are supporting unconstitutional behavior and anti – Hindu activities of Christians in the divine kingdom of God. But for that first we have to devastate this irreligious congress government and also we should elect the pro – Hindu active government! – Editor)

Christians fear zealots ire in J&K

Controversy Started With Video Showing Pastor Baptising Young Muslim Boys

Randeep Singh Nandal TNN

Srinagar: From the toast of Srinagar to a man with a question mark about his intentions,it has been a rapid slide downhill for Juan Marcos Troia, the Argentinian football coach and the star of the documentary,Inshallah Football.
In 2009,Marcos was credited with reviving football in Kashmir.Inshallah Football is the story of one of Marcoss best players,Basharat, the son of a former militant, and his dream to play in Brazil.Denied a passport by the government,Marcoss wife Priscilla cheers Basharat up.A scene in the documentary shows her translating the words on a football jersey,Born to play football.
Basharat got his passport and, with six other boys, went to Brazil a few months ago.But there is no smile of satisfaction for Marcos.Much has changed in Kashmir since 2009.
Kashmir is in the grip of a controversy surrounding the alleged conversion of a few Muslim youth to Christianity by priests and foreign NGOs.Everyone,it seems,is under the scanner.Coach Troia, who has been questioned by the state football association about the funding for his football clubs,is now the target of a whisper campaign. The fundamentalists are ratcheting up religious mobilisation.
Already a victim of attacks by unknown groups that vandalized his house,Marcos is asking cops for help.We did contact Ashwin Kumar (director of Inshallah Football ) for help, but he is busy with his film.We have to fend for ourselves, says Marcoss dejected wife,Priscilla.
The controversy began when a video surfaced showing a pastor,Chander Mani Khanna, baptising young Muslim boys.A Sharia court summoned Khanna and accused him of converting Muslims by luring them with money a claim the Christian Council of India denies.
Khanna was arrested for disturbing communal peace. He is now on bail but the Sharia court ordered his expulsion from the state.
Although this court has no legal sanctity, the National Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party are both silent. This has left the field open for further pressure on the 400-odd Christians in the Valley.
The two missionary schools in Srinagar now are also in the dock, with calls to include Islamic prayers as part of the curriculum and prove they do not promote Christianity. The few foreign nationals who live here are harassed.I got a call around midnight, and this man on the phone asked me how many copies of Bible I had,how my real motive was known to him, said one foreigner.Local converts are worse off.A few weeks ago,the mere rumour that a few boys in a Ganderbal village had converted led to a raids by five carloads of men led by a maulvi from a madrassa.Their homes were ransacked.

Meanwhile, in J&K...... Christians get a taste of what Hindus faced

The manner in which Muslim zealots in Jammu & Kashmir have been harassing the State’s Christian minority community over a religious conversion row that erupted last week demonstrates yet again the unbridled and absolutely illegal manner in which mullahs are enforcing their writ.

They have now begun to ‘ban’ priests, ‘banish’ foreign NGOs and demand that missionary-run schools should include Islamic prayers. Given this kind of bullying, it is little wonder that the Valley’s Christians are living in fear. They have become the victims of a vicious slander campaign that includes the kind of story that one of the State’s English dailies ran last Thursday.

A full-page spread titled, ‘Apostasy Unveiled’, the report is a first person account of a love-lorn young Muslim boy who has been lured with money, alcohol and drugs and ultimately beguiled into converting to Christianity — just the kind of thing that the Muslim-majority State’s religious guardians can be trusted to raise a ruckus about.

Ever since the conversion dispute surfaced, the situation has progressively worsened for the Christians, as the Valley’s mullahs have stepped up their efforts to make the entire community in Jammu & Kashmir — which has only a few hundred members — and even foreigners who practice Christianity, their target of hate and violence.

The most telling example of this mindless harassment is perhaps the story of Juan Marcos Troia — an Argentine football coach who had been promoting his sport in the Valley but is now being hounded by the fanatics. His house has been vandalised, funding for his clubs are under the scanner and he has received calls in the middle of the night asking how many copies of the Bible he keeps at home.

At the centre of this controversy is a certain Protestant Pastor, CM Khanna. Themullahs have released a video of his baptising Muslim boys and a shari’ah ‘court’ has expelled him from the State in blatant violation of the law of the land that does not recognise such illegitimate directives.

While the fundamentalists have behaved in the way they would be expected to — and as they have always done — it is for the State Government to end the persecution of the Christian minority which follows the cleansing of the Kashmir Valley of its Hindu minority. Unfortunately, no protection has been given to Pastor Khanna (instead, he has been arrested for disturbing communal peace) nor to the likes of Mr Troia — all of whom have been left to fend for themselves.

Similarly, the country’s Left-liberals, who are quick to denounce Hindus, have, once again, remained stunningly silent in the face of Islamist bullying. Just like they once glossed over the mass exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the Valley, today there is barely a murmur of protest in support of the Christians living in the Valley.

veeramani_040910.jpg

america.jpg

The truth about Medha Patkar - Francois Gautier

Listen to this article. Powered by Odiogo.com

30 JANUARY, 2012

The Truth about Medha Patkar

Listen to this article. Powered by Odiogo.com

Francois Gautier exposes Medha Patkar's explosive agenda

Most people in India have a positive impression about Medha Patkar. Is she not the secular activist who takes on big business, fights for preserving India’s greenery and defends the poor and downtrodden?

However documents leaked to the press have revealed a very different picture: that of a scheming person, who has no qualms about breaking the law and whose sources of funding are mysterious.

In a letter written in October 2007, Dr Urmilaben Patel, member of the Congress Working Committee, wrote to Shri Pranab Mukherjee, who was then the Hon'ble Minister for External Affairs Government of India: “You are kindly aware, that Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) headed by Medha Patkar is actively involved in opposing all hydro projects in India... I have recently received material which I find quite disturbing.. I specifically draw your attention into the message of Ms. Patkar using the words of "pressurizing the UPA government", and "honouring" a Supreme Court Judge for a favourable verdict, as is explicit in the emails. It seems it is a deliberate act on the part of Ms. Patkar to defame UPA Govt. I humbly suggest that Govt, should immediately enquire how Medha Patkar managed favourable verdict and take appropriate action against Ms. Patkar for bringing disrepute to the Govt, and to the Hon'ble Supreme Court and halting the progress of the nation. I feel this issue is of national importance and deserves your personal attention”.

Nothing ever came out of it. Yet, since then, there has emerged even more disturbing evidence of NBA's nefarious collusion with foreign elements This is in the form of an exchange of confidential emails between Ms. Patkar and by Mr. Patrick McCully, Ex. Director, International Rivers Network (IRN) based at Berkeley (United States). Now who is this Patrick McCully? He is a man who cavorts with enemies of India, particularly with Angana Chatterjee, on the board of IRN, a known India baiter, who was very close to Ghulab Nabi Fai, recently arrested by the FBI for being an ISI spy. Angana Chatterjee is married to Richard Shapiro, Director and Associate Professor of the Graduate Anthropology Program at CIIS. Now both Shapiro and Chatterjee were regular at the ISI sponsored junkets. She was charged of being propped up by the ISI to launch an anti-India campaign. Further, her partner Richard Shapiro was denied entry to India in 2010 for what was reported to be his anti-India propaganda.

The material leaked is indeed quiet disturbing, particularly the exchange of emails between Ms. Patkar and Mr. Patrick McCully. Few details are given below.

1. The Honourable Supreme Court pronounced its verdict, dismissing NCCL's PIL on July 10, 2007 around 11.00 am.

2. The news is posted on The Times of India's website at 11.26 am.

3. The information along with the news item is sent to Mr. Patrick McCully from Ms. Patkar's email address (nba.medha@qmail.com) at 12.03 pm on July 10. i.e. within 36 minutes.

4. Mr. Patrick writes back to Ms. Patkar on July 12: "How did you manage this? Who was the second judge?"

5. Ms. Patkar replies the next day i.e. on 13th July, at 10:13 AM saying "many eminent persons wrote to the UPA government.. we dealt with the press selectively and ensured that pressure was kept all through." She also sends a soft copy of the judgment and the profiles of Justice C K Thakker and Justice Altamas Kabir.

6. Mr. Patrick reverts on July 17 congratulating Ms, Patkar, and suggesting that five or six people associated with managing "this verdict" be honoured at a function in London (UK). The mail says: "...We must honour Judge Kabir for supporting you. Please explore the possibility. He will retire in 2013 - a very useful man for your future battles." It might be mentioned that the verdict was written by hon'ble Justice Kabir.

7. On July 19, Mr. Patrick writes again suggesting that apart from advocates, individuals who supported in NBA's. defence also be included in the felicitation programme in London. To this Ms. Medha responds on July 22 "apart from advocates no one would like to be acknowledged for writing to pressurize the government. That might boomerang".

As you can see the exchange is explosive and dangerous to the extent that it shows a foreign interest and support to a group that is indulging in obstruction to Country's development.

Then, there is the question of how does Medha Patkar get her finances? Medha Patkar has the Right Livelihood Award, the Rev. MA Thomas National Human Rights Award, Amnesty International's Human Rights Defender's Award, and the BBC's Green Ribbon Award for Best International Political Campaigner. Her Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) is described as a "social movement". Presumably this social movement handles money, if only for its own expenses. But the Supreme Court has noted the NBA is not a registered entity. So, how does it bank its money? How does it account for its expenses? The NBA, which, as we have seen, has international connections, does not seem to have its own website. Foreign sources fund its support groups. But which foreign sources? Could the American Security agencies, which have no qualms about using a Richard Headley - and still shelter him from the Indian justice - covertly fund Medha Patkar? Finally, accused of faking medical certificates, fined more than once for dodging court hearings, Patkar is now accused by the Supreme Court itself of†filing a false affidavit before it.

Many of us have been wondering why nobody can touch Medha Patkar, in spite of all her misdoings, in spite of even of the Congress, the very party Medha associates herself willingly with, speaking against her? The answer is simple: she is protected by the most powerful person in India.

Christ! CPM gets a new comrade

Party Puts Jesus And Marx On The Same Pedestal

K Sabarinath TNN

Kochi: Karl Marx would have risen from his grave had he known that he would be featured along with Jesus Christ at a history exhibition organizedby theCPM as part of its upcoming state meet in Thiruvananthapuram.
For Fr Paul Thelakat, spokesperson of the Syro-M alabar Church, thisis yet another move by the party to gain wider acceptance, something the CPM has been working on since last November when pictures of Mother Teresa weredisplayed at an area committee meeting of the party in Aluva.
It shows that the partys icons like Stalin,Mao,Pol Pot,etc., who were mass murderers, cannot be exhibited as models for the Indian masses. In a way they are going back to their own Judeo-Christian heritage. This going backcouldbethe resultof a realisation that they have to rediscover their ideology, hesaid.
While he welcomed the change,he said there was also an element of realpolitik. The Marxian practice of class struggle and materialism, denying any religious and spiritual dimension, has been suicidal for communism. If they are returning to Christ andtrying to remodeltheir ideology, then it is a welcome thing. It can also be a tactical action in linewiththeir principleof ends justifying the means and fool people with Christ. In that case,it is a betrayal of Christ, hesaid.
Left commentator and fellow traveller N M Pearson, however, had no doubts that this was opportunism. This is yet another sign that the party does not take ideology seriously. This is pure populism and a part of a policy to gain acceptance of various caste and religious factions. The party had earlier toed EMS line that Sri Narayana Guru was only a social reformer and not a revolutionary.Later they tried to adopt him, he said.Comparing the strategy to Latin Americas liberation theology, which marriedChristianity andM arxism, hesaid whereas that was truly emancipatory, the CPMs move was to meet narrow political ends.Meanwhile,Kadakampilly Surendran,Thiruvananthapuram district secretary of theCPM,saidChristwas a universal figure who had fought for the wretched of theearth andbecome a martyr.Christis an avatar and a martyr. He had to pay with hislifefor fighting injustices, hesaid.
In Thiruvananthapuram,CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan said Jesus Christ had been the greatest revolutionary leader the world had ever seen.He was responding to the controversy over portraying Christ as a revolutionary leader in the ongoing exhibition Marx isRight.
Vijayan said Marxists have always had high regard for the actions of Jesus Christ. He was the one who drove out blade mafia and hoarders from places of worship. We have no misgivings about considering him arevolutionary leader, saidPinarayi.

US Malayalis on church buying spree

Preetha T S, TNN Feb 4, 2012, 04.59AM IST

KOCHI: Kerala's Syro-Malabar Church, the world's second largest oriental Catholic Church, is busy buying property in the US and building its own churches. With its congregation growing in recent years, the Church is keen to have its own shrines.

"Though we had formed communities in all these places years ago, the Church started owning independent churches only now. We need to cater to a wider congregation, and that's why the Church is buying and building independent parish churches," Fr G Madathiparambil, ex-vicar general of St Thomas Syro-Malabar diocese of Chicago who has established many churches, said.

During his 10-year tenure, Fr Madathiparambil was instrumental in establishing many new churches.

To date, the denomination owns 22 churches in the US, including St Jeremiah Church in Framingham which it bought from the archdiocese of Boston last October for $2 million. Its piece de resistance, however, will be a $9 million cathedral currently under construction in Chicago. Most of these churches are designed in the Kerala style and have services in both English and Malayalam. Apart from holy mass every Sunday, most churches conduct catechism classes, retreats and baptisms.

Though the first church was bought in 1992, most of the expansion has happened only in recent years. While mostly unused Jewish temples and Protestant churches have been bought out, where this is not possible, land is bought and new churches built. Most of these churches are located in areas where Malayalis with roots in places like Pala, Kanjirappally and Kottayam have settled down.

The money for buying property and constructing churches is raised through bank loans and contributions from parishioners. The running expense is quite high. "In some parts of America, we share our services with other churches to avoid the huge maintenance expenses, but in some places it is more convenient to buy or construct a new church," says Fr Paul Thelekat, spokesperson of the Syro-Malabar Church.

Next on the Syro-Malabar Church's list is a parish church in New Jersey. In fact, the land has already been bought for $1 million. About $2 million would be spent on the construction. The church is also setting its sights on places like Arizona and Washington DC.

All roads lead to Rome

The Syro-Malabar Church's expansion is not confined to the US. It has built a church in Qatarwhich has been off-limits for non-Islamic religions for centuries. But what takes the wafer is the $20 million (Rs 100 crore) church it is planning at the very heart of Christendom-Rome. The church is planning to buy a property there which can be used for ecclesiastical and residential purposes. According to sources, when a top delegation of the church visited Rome a couple of months ago, they identified a 12-room building which suits it needs. "It is too early to say anything," Major Archbishop and cardinal designate Mar George Alencherry told TOI. Currently, the church has a priest in Italy to coordinate matters, but the Rome diocese and the Italian episcopal conference are still to grant permission for a permanent church.

‘Congress shares church’s view on Goa land-use plan’

The archdiocesan council has demanded that the Regional plan 2021 be re-framed.

In an effort to woo Christians for the assembly polls, the ruling Congress party in Goa has said it shares the concerns of a church institution regarding the framing of a new land-use plan for the state.

The archdiocesan Council for Social Justice and Peace (CSJP) has demanded that the Regional plan 2021 be framed according to the wishes of the people.

The congress government "has always been inspired by the efforts of CSJP in bettering Goa," said Altinho Gomes, general secretary of the party's state unit.

He said that with regard to CSJP's concerns about Regional Plan 2021, the party had stressed that its stand would be in accordance with gram sabha (village council).

"We have not taken a final decision and will be taking the plan back to gram sabhas and people before finalizing it," he said.

The Church and village bodies that discussed the plan determined that it paved the way for unbridled construction activity in violation of environment regulations.

On December 16 last, thousands marched to the state capital to demand scrapping of the plan.

The CSJP noted that the plan did not specify forests, scrub vegetation or grazing lands as natural cover.

The assembly elections in the state are due on March 3.

Catholic pop singer to promote ethical voting in Goa

Remo Fernandes was chosen as the brand ambassador for Goa polls by the election commission.

A Catholic pop singer in Goa has been roped in to promote ethical voting during the March 3 assembly elections in the state.

Remo Fernandes was recently elected as the brand ambassador by the Election Commission of India for Goa.

The singer said he would create awareness amongst people, especially youths.

"I have been writing songs against corruption for last 28 years," he said.

Fernandes' posters and banners appealing people to come out in large numbers and vote would be erected across the state.

"I will also be giving media interviews asking people to vote. More than the title (of a brand ambassador), I see this as a great responsibility. I am taking this as a personal responsibility," he said.

Fernandes, who has also composed songs for Bollywood films, said that this time the election in the state would be fought on the issue of corruption.

“The issues of religion, caste and creed have always shadowed the main issue of corruption in the previous elections but not this time,” he said in the presence of Chief Election Commissioner S. Y. Quraishi.

When asked whether he would compose a song for this election, Fernandes said, "I may compose a song but it always depends on my inspiration."

Sharia court sends out a challenge

Kashmir Christians see bleak outlook as Muslim body exerts growing power

By John Dayal
New Delhi:

The Srinagar sharia court’s directive to the Jammu and Kashmir state government last week to expel three pastors and takeover two schools run by the Church of North India has revived memories of the 1985 exodus of Hindu Kashmiri Pundits.

Of the three pastors — Rev C M Khanna and Rev Gayoor Masei of the Church of North India and Catholic Mill Hill missionary Fr Jim Borst — Rev Khanna is on bail following his arrest in December and all three are reported safe somewhere outside the Kashmir Valley.

There is no congruence, no real similarities in the situation of the Hindus and the Christians in the Kashmir Valley – one of the state’s four regions, and the only one which is now almost entirely Muslim. Over 300,000 Pundits fled the valley in 1985 in the face of violence and coercion by militant and terrorist groups, many of them controlled by Pakistan-based terror organizations.

The elected government of the state was then sympathetic to the Pundits, though powerless in the face of the armed might of extremist groups.

The government, this time around, seems to have succumbed to religious pressure and handed over its powers to the sharia court and to the few orthodox and fundamentalist groups that run the 200-year-old advisory organization.

Christian Human rights organizations, including the All India Christian Council and the Evangelical Fellowship of India, say it is almost as if the government has accepted the writ of the court and made its rulings applicable as the laws of the land.

The Christian community maintains it does not come under the jurisdiction of the court which is for Muslims only, and on a voluntary basis too.

Christian organizations in India have come face to face with the implications the special position of Jammu and Kashmir State in the Indian Federation has because of the circumstances of its ceding to India during the 1947 partition.

The state has its own penal code, modeled on the one in India. It does not have a minorities commission or any structure to assure protection for religious and ethnic minority groups. The National Human Rights Commission and other Federal organizations cannot even comment on its internal affairs.

Above all, no Indian civil society group is willing to send a fact finding team or investigate the situation, pleading the “sensitive nature” of peace in the valley where the local population is in a state of rebellion against New Delhi.

In fact, barring two journalists, no one has written against the recent fatwa of the sharia court, and no major or minor Muslim organization in India has provided help or offered to mediate. This has made the isolation of the small Christian community so severe and their trauma so acute.

The local police have been acting, seemingly, only at the behest of the sharia court. This week it arrested five people who allegedly converted to Christianity and “were going to a church to receive financial emoluments,” as the local media, enthusiastically involved in incriminating the church, reported.

Those arrested were identified as Ghulam Hassan Dar and Abdul Hamid Sofi from Khag Budgam, and Feroz Ahmad Khan, Riyaz Ahmad Mir and Mohammad Ashraf Wani from Bandipora. Their fate is not known.

The police in December had arrested Rev Khanna at his home after the priest had been interrogated by the sharia court for seven hours for allegedly baptizing several Muslims youths. These conversions were filmed on mobile phones by several people present, and then leaked. Footage of the baptisms was also widely circulated.

Also publicized was an account by a young man who said he had been seduced by the pastor’s daughter, made to drink pig’s blood and then converted. The story was played up by the local media and denied by the pastor.

A Christian fact finding team from New Delhi which met Rev Khanna, several Muslim converts, the Mirwaiz and Grand Mufti of Kashmir, found little of substance in the allegations.

They, however, found the situation for Christians was very serious indeed, and the community, Catholic and Protestant, was in a state of panic.

In its report it said: “Apart from the safety and security of Pastor Khanna, his family and his parishioners, old and new, we were also apprehensive about the state of justice in the valley where the Bar Association had apparently announced they would not defend the pastor. Local lawyers also disturbed proceedings when Pastor Khanna’s bail petition was eventually heard by the judge, who eventually granted Pastor Khanna’s release on bail on December 1.”

Pastor Khanna said he had been approached many times by Muslims who asked to be converted. He also said he had always asked them why they wanted to be Christians.

He said they always replied that they were not getting any help or assistance from the Islamic leadership. They had heard that the Church helped Christians materially.

He said he had always turned away such people.

Father Thomas Mathew of the Catholic Church had similar experiences. He, too, turned them away.

Christian clergy also allege some of those seeking conversion were undercover police and others had been sent by Islamic groups to trap priests.

The fact finding group’s report felt the seeds of confrontation with the Christian community lies within a powerful segment of the Islamic clergy which is looking to compete for influence with the state government, other political groups, the military and political parties.

The vast majority of Kashmiris in the valley, all Muslim, are peaceful people adhering to a soft and melodious Sufi Islam, far removed from the stridency of Wahabism espoused by the extremist groups.

John Dayal is the general-secretary of All India Christian Council and a member of the Indian government’s National Integration Council

Roman Missal may have been lost in translation

Faithfulness to the Latin style poses problems for vernacular clarity

By Errol D'Lima SJ
Pune:

On the first Sunday of Advent last year, some dioceses in India began using the new Roman Missal with its amended English translation.

Bishops and liturgists explained the salient features of the new translation. The new Roman Missal takes note of the revised Latin Code of Canon Law (1983), variations in expression and prescription found in other liturgical books, and present-day pastoral needs.

It is meant to be “an instrument, as it were, of liturgical unity and as a monument of true and reverent worship in the Church,” as had been stated in the apostolic constitution of Pope Pius V who presented the editio princeps of the Missale Romanum (1570). But is the new missal likely to fulfil this purpose?

A radical revision of the mass had been mandated by the Second Vatican Council in its Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy (SC). To ensure the “devout and active participation by the faithful,” SC mandated the following:

“...the rites are to be simplified, due care being taken to preserve their substance. Parts which with the passage of time came to be duplicated, or were added with little advantage, are to be omitted. Other parts which suffered loss through accidents of history are to be restored to the vigour they had in the days of the holy Fathers, as may seem useful or necessary” (50).

Pope Paul VI set up an International Consilium (council) in 1964 to revise the liturgical books in use so that they reflected the directives of the Council. The Consilium issued an InstructionComme le prevoit in 1969 on how liturgical texts for congregational celebrations were to be translated:

“...it is not sufficient that a liturgical translation merely reproduce the expressions and ideas of the original text. Rather it must faithfully communicate to a given people, and in their own language, that which the Church by means of this given text originally intended to communicate to another people in another time. A faithful translation, therefore, cannot be judged on the basis of individual words; the total context of this specific act of communication must be kept in mind, as well as the literary form proper to the respective languages” (6).

In 1970 Pope Paul VI promulgated the Missale Romanum with the revised liturgy. Later, the Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments had asked bishops’ conferences to prepare vernacular editions from the Missale Romanum.

Already in 1963 ten bishops’ conferences of countries – including India – where English is used in celebrating the liturgy had set up the International Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL) to prepare translations of the Latin liturgical books.

Each conference was represented by a bishop in the ICEL, which merely produced texts but left to the bishops’ conferences the task of authorizing their use in the liturgy after the Holy See’srecognitio (review/approval).

In 2001, the Congregation issued Liturgiam authenticam (LA), an Instruction on the use of vernacular languages in the publication of books of the Roman liturgy. It detailed the principles of translation to be followed in future translations and insisted on recognitio of the Apostolic See before a translation was “undertaken in any way.” (15)

It frowned on “creative innovation” (20) and – other things being equal – wanted Gregorian chant as proper to the Roman liturgy “to be given pride of place in liturgical celebrations” (28).

Given the nature of the minute instructions mandated by LA, it would appear that the Congregation was not altogether happy with the ICEL’s efforts.

LA’s preference was for “formal equivalence” in translating from Latin to the Vernacular. ICEL employed the method of “dynamic or functional equivalence” so that its translation expressed the spirit of the original (Latin) in the new language (the Vernacular).

While formal equivalence is primarily concerned with using words which give priority to the meaning contained in the original, dynamic or functional equivalence tries to interpret and articulate the spirit of the original language in the vernacular discourse. If formal equivalence is the overriding concern of the translator, the resultant vernacular translation will pose problems to those using it.

LA also affirms that “the Church herself must freely decide upon the system of language that will serve her doctrinal mission most effectively, and should not be subject to externally imposed linguistic norms that are detrimental to that mission” (30). One result has been the absence of inclusive language in the liturgical texts. Such considerations put a burden on the ICEL translators and raise questions about the way in which LA understands the art of translating.

According to the eminent liturgist Robert Taft, “...to pretend that a translation is not in a very real sense an interpretation of the original is to be completely ignorant of both the nature of language and the nature of translating.”

In the past two decades, gender sensitivity has raised questions about the place of women in the Church and women’s ordination. The deliberate exclusion of inclusive language could foster a greater sense of alienation among women.

To the common mass-goer, the retention of terms such as “consubstantial” or the addition of words like “dewfall” will seem uncalled for.

Will keeping to a language structure and style which suits the Latin language do justice to the vernacular translations meant to inform liturgical celebration? Only the future will tell.

Indias first transgender pastor leads city church

Pratiksha Ramumar & Karthik S TNN

Chennai: Shunned and traumatized as a youngster,25-year-old Bharathi now preaches to a congregation of 45 respectful parishioners, including 14 families,as Indias first transgender pastor.
Bharathi, who completed her bachelors degree in theology last April, has been a pastor at the Evangelical Church of India (ECI) branch in Chengalpet,on the outskirts of Chennai, for the past eight months.
The pathbreaking move by the ECI,which has more than 100,000 followers across India, coincides with evangelical denominations in other countries, like the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, deciding to allow transgenders as pastors.
Bharathi, whose family assumed that she was a boy at birth, says she had had a harrowing childhood.I was very feminine and my classmates and neighbours would make fun of me.I became a loner and could not even complete Class 12, she says.
When Bharathi was 10 years old,she says,an angel entered their home.A sister at a church near our home took pity on me.One day she took me to a church, she says. The church soon became Bharathis home and she decided to embrace Christianity at the age of 12.I started reading the Bible, praying in the church every day.I converted when I was 12 and was baptized a few years later in 2000.
Bharathi conducts service in Tamil and English every Sunday, administers communion to her parishioners, and is training another transgender to become a pastor.
Bharathi says her parishioners acceptance of her has touched her deeply.I have conducted two baby showers for families and even named a child.Though I do not have a licence to conduct a wedding,a parishioner printed my name on his wedding invitation, says Bharathi.
Bharathi says such societal acceptance was once just a dream for her and continues to be a dream for thousands of transgenders across the country.I have formed a team to work with me among transgenders in Chengalpet,to bring them into the church and help them stay out of trouble, she says.
Society generally ostracises the transgender community, but Bharathi has an opportunity to preach to an entire community. It is something everybody is proud of, says Devi,a transgender who has adopted Bharathi as her daughter.
Bharathi, who left home more than seven years ago, visited her family two months ago.I had resolved to return to my family only after reaching a position of repute. When I returned,my parents were proud of me.

Evangelicals, Vatican Reach Agreement on Proselytizing

Evangelicals, Vatican Reach Agreement on Proselytizing
World Christian leaders have issued an official document on the ethical behavior of Christian missionaries.

June 29, 2011
The World Evangelical Alliance (WEA), the World Council of Churches (WCC) and the Vatican's Pontifical Council on Inter-religious Dialogue (PCID) have issued an official document containing recommendations on the ethics of Christian missionaries. Called the first of its kind in history, the document was created after a five-year consultation between the three organizations partially in response to criticisms from religious communities of Christian missionaries using "deception and coercive means" to win people to Christ.
The document, titled "Christian Witness in a Multi-Religious World: Recommendations for Conduct," include guidelines on developing methods for missions work. Specifically, Christian missionaries are to "reject all forms of violence" and the use of "financial incentives and rewards" and to "acknowledge and appreciate what is true and good" in other religions. It also advises missionaries to permit "sufficient time for adequate reflection and preparation" before a person converts.
Religion expert at Georgetown University Rev. Daniel A. Madigan said the document represents "an admission" that such practices have been occuring in Christian missionary work. The three developing bodies are said to represent 90 percent of the world's Christians, including Catholic, Anglican, Orthodox, Protestant, Pentecostal, Evangelical and independent churches. Christians Under Attack.

By Michael Collins Piper

So-called "leaders" of the Christian evangelical movement have agreed to give up spreading the Gospel of Christ in the Holy Land in order to avoid being jailed under a proposed Israeli law aimed at stamping out Christian missionary work in Israel.

Anti-Christian forces led by a wide-ranging group of high-ranking Israeli officials won a major victory on March 30. Representatives of 50 different international Christian evangelical groups entered into what was described as an "unprecedented" joint statement promising not to carry out Christian missionary work in Israel.

In return, Israeli lawmaker Nissim Zvili said that he would drop his sponsorship of a proposed measure before the Israeli parliament (widely supported among various political factions in Israel) that would outlaw any effort to teach or propagate Christian doctrine in Israel. Under Zvili's highly popular proposal, any Christian missionary found guilty of violating the law would be sent to prison for one year. Zvili hailed the Christian surrender, saying: "This is better than a law. This is a very big accomplishment."

The Christian groups that surrendered to Israeli pressure, and thereby abandoned their long-standing practice of proselytizing the Christian faith, issued a statement saying that they rejoice in the presence of the Jewish people in this country of their ancestors and agreed to avoid activities which alienate Jews in Israel from their tradition and community.

In response to the surrender by the Christian groups in the face of the anti-Christian legislation, one American Christian evangelist, Rev. Dale Crowley Jr., expressed great shock and dismay. Crowley said that those groups that endorsed the agreement have, in Crowley's direct terms, "Betrayed our Lord." Crowley says that purveying the Gospel of Christ to nonbelievers is integral to the Christian faith and stems from the biblical great commission directing Christians to share their faith.

Crowley notes that two newspapers with prominent circulation in the pro-Israel community, Washington Jewish Week and the New York City-based Forward, have "quite notably", in his words, not reported on this Israeli victory over Christian evangelism. Crowley said that he has been prodding Washington Jewish Week to publish the story but that, thus far, the influential publication has not done so.

"The Israelis want to keep this information under wraps," Crowley said, "and the Christian groups that entered into this outrageous betrayal of their faith are ashamed of themselves, as they certainly should be."

According to Crowley, the complete joint statement issued by the Christian groups has been virtually impossible to obtain, despite the fact that some 50 different groups have affixed their names to the statement. Also, says Crowley, the actual names of the 50 different groups that are signatories to the agreement are also out of reach. When the names of those groups are finally made public, says Crowley, Christians should cease supporting those groups since they have effectively betrayed their Biblical commission to spread the gospel by abandoning their missionary work in the land where Christ lived and carried out his work.

VERY REAL PROBLEMS

At the time the anti-Christian bill was first introduced in the Israeli parliament, even Rev. David Allen Lewis, president of the pro-Israel group, Christians United for Israel, admitted that there were some very real problems with the legislation. "This bill means great hardship for Zionist

evangelicals like myself," said Lewis, who worried that the action would revive the argument of those who question Christian support for Israel, saying, "How can you support the Jewish nation when they are against Christianity?"

When I contacted the offices of Christian evangelists Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson, both of whom are loud advocates of pro-Israel policy (despite the anti-Christian stance of the Israeli leadership), neither would comment on the anti-Christian legislation. Sen. Jesse Helms (R-N.C.) another vocal supporter of Israel (and ally of the so-called "Christian Right" in the United States), likewise refused to provide me any comment on the anti-Christian offensive in Israel.

Although Israel today is torn asunder by vast feuding among various political and religious factions even within the Jewish community as a whole, the anti-Christian proposal by Israeli lawmaker Zvili had wide-ranging support throughout the Israeli population.

ARCHITECT NAMED

Longtime Republican Party and conservative movement leader John Lofton, previously a pro-Israel zealot but now an unabashed Christian who is not afraid to criticize Israeli excesses, has been watching the anti-Christian offensive in Israel.

Lofton recently reported in his Lofton Report that Clarence Wagner, director of the evangelical foundation Bridges for Peace, was the architect of this agreement, which, in Lofton's words, "denies our Lord." Lofton says that "Wagner and his cowardly crew have chosen to obey men rather than God" and that "they have chosen to be ashamed of the Gospel even though," says Lofton, quoting Romans 1:16, "it is the power or God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek."

John Alpher of the American Jewish Committee's Israel/Middle East Office has hailed the sell-out as "a dynamic Christian commitment to the vitality of Israel and Judaism." His colleague, Rabbi A. James Rudin, the AJC's "director of interreligious affairs," said that the agreement is "a strong refutation of those Christians who sadly still target Jews as possible converts to Christianity." Rudin says that he hopes the statement will be "a model for others to emulate throughout the world."

NOT PREACH?

Lofton had strong words in response to the AJC's comments: "For openers, no Christian would ever agree not to preach the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Secondly, apart from Christ, there is no "vitality" for anybody, including Israel and Judaism. As for those Christians who "sadly" target Jews for conversion to Christianity, well, the Lord Himself was one of those "Christians"." Lofton concluded: "God forbid that this Christ-hating agreement should ever be emulated, or become a model, for anybody."

Virtually the only national news publication in America to report on the Israeli war on Christianity was us on March 17, 1997. We published a special eight-page report entitled Israel Declares War on Christianity and told the story of the anti-Christian legislation. The special report featured a ground-breaking essay by the aforementioned Christian evangelist, Dale Crowley, Jr., in which Crowley refuted the popular political theory that the present day geographic entity known as Israel is not the "Israel" that is referred to in the Bible.

Another essay by Crowley, appearing in the same report, concluded that America's heritage is, in fact, based on Christian teachings and that the term "Judeo-Christian" has no rational or actual applicability to the reality of American history or tradition.

THE EVANGELICAL PROJECT IN ORISSA

As Kandhamal burns, the BJD-BJP coalition in Orissa is under severe strain. It should be obvious to even the most amateur of political observers that the murder of Swami Lakshmananda was a pre-emptive strike at unravelling this coalition. The unabated violence against Christians is not just unacceptable but is plain stupidity to provoke it for it only widens chasm between the BJD and the BJP ahead of the elections to hand over Orissa on a platter to the Congress. The Naveen Patnaik Administration and the BJP must realise the stakes are too high for the NDA to?not contain the violence and to bring the perpetrators of the murdee and subsequent violence to justice.
Having said that the events in Orissa are symptomatic of a deeper malaise that needs to be fully understood. When violence had flared in Kandhamal during Christmas last yera Offstumped had pointed out that it was a feud over entitlements while highlighting the mischief mongering by the National Minorities Commission’s fact finding team.
The bias in the NCM’s investigation is clear from these remarks that find place in the official report.
The 1991 Census shows the Christians constituted 75597 of the population of Kandhmal district whereas in the 2001 Census their population had gone up to 117950. While the increase in population in percentage terms is substantial, there is no evidence whatsoever that this increase occurred under duress or on account of inducement to conversion. A stringent law regarding conversion the Orissa Freedom of Religion Act has been on the statute books for the past four decades. The NCM Members asked both district officials and senior officials in the State Secretariat whether any cases had been reported or filed with regard to infringement of this law over the past 10 years. Not one incident of forcible conversion was cited or adduced. We also inquired from the Church representatives whether they keep a register of conversions. Such a register is a routine practice at the time of baptism. The Church representatives confirmed that they indeed maintained such a register. But no one has apparently bothered to check it. In fact the Archbishop of Bhubaneshwar told the NCM team that neither he nor anyone in the Diocese was ever summoned by the authorities with regard to matters relating to conversion. From the above the NCM team has inferred that there is no basis whatsoever to justify the anti-conversion campaign. On the other hand, this mischievous campaign has created an atmosphere of prejudice and suspicion against the Christian community and Christian priests and organizations.
It is clear from the above that the NCM team did the bare minimum necessary to understand the social effects of evangelical activity in Orissa. But what is confounding is the arrogance of the NCM in concluding that there is “no basis” for what it calls an “anti-conversion” campaign.
Offstumped will now detail the Evangelical Project in Orissa and the foreign entities behind it.
To understand this Project better, Offstumped draws the attention of its readers to foreign evangelocal entities “World Encounter” and LCMC (a Lutheran Church Congregation). The LCMC has a quarterly newsletter and in its edition for the first quarter of 2007, the LCMC newslettercarried a detailed 1 page story focused on Orissa where it invited congregations in the U.S.A for what it called
For a life-transforming experience, join World Encounter, in association with LCMC, on a short term outreach to India October 5-22, 2007. Orissa Evangelical Fellowship (OEF), an LCMC association of churches in India, has invited congregations in the US to encourage them in their efforts to share the Good News with the unreached people of India.
What’s interesting is why this project zeroed in on Orissa of all places, in its own words.
The people of Orissa are primarily tribal/animists and Hindus who worship spirits, trees, rocks, and other objects of nature. The heart of the OEF vision is focused on church planting, discipleship, and leadership…Groups of believers worship inhomes and thatch-roofed churches. In the midst of opposi-tion to the Gospel, they are committed to reaching their Hindu neighbors and families with the Good News that has transformed their lives .
This precisely is the problem in Orissa – aggressive proselytization with foreign funding and support thats invasive of people’s privacy with a clear objective of “planting churches”, expanding to “new villages” and evangelizing to “Hindu Neighbors”.
This not about the practice of Christianity in Orissa.
This is about changing the social demographics and the fabric of society in poor rural pockets of Orissa, one village, one neighborhood at a time.
To appreciate how well prepared this Evangelical Project in its targetting of Orissa, consider this compilation of target Villages in Orissa by geo-cordinates.
To further appreciate the sophistication and subterfuge with which proselytization is conducted in Orissa in the post-Staines era read this blog post by a Brian Zahnd, founder and senior pastor of Word of Life Church, a 4,000 member congregation in St. Joseph, Missouri.
I was never allowed to sit on the platform and was never introduced as a preacher. P.G. would say that he and his wife, Lilly, and his daughter, Grace, were the preachers. They would get up, speak for five minutes, and then P.G. would say he had a friend he wanted to introduce and bring a “greeting.” P.G. would introduce me as a friend bringing a greeting, and then as he handed me the microphone, he would whisper, “Preach for an hour and a half.” We did this twice a day and every evening. So three times a day I would bring a 90 minute “greeting.” I was told the police were wondering, “Who is this greeting man?” Because several thousand local people were coming at night, the evening meetings took on the tone of an evangelistic event. The last three nights I preached strong evangelistic messages….
The Orissa Government maintains a list of foreign contributions to NGOs in Orissa. The list is worth reading to appreciate how much money was pumped from International sources to further the evangelical project in Orissa during the earlier part of this decade – 2.3 crores to Orissa Fellowship Ministry, 12 crores for Cuttack Roman Catholic Diocese, 2.73 crore for Indian Evangelical Association, 1.4 crores for Brethren in Christ Church, 2.8crores for East India Mission, 4.4 crores for Joypore Evangelical Lutheran Church … the list goes on.
Of all the digging up by Offstumped, this appeal for foreign funds by a Pastor from Orissa should take the cake, replete with address and details of Bank Accounts posted as a comment on a Christian Financial Ministries site,?its funny and tragic at the same time.
Pastor. Surya Karada AGAPE REACHING MINISTRIES GOVT. REGD. NO: 5392-30-2000-2001.GOVT. FCRA. NO: 105060070. FCRA.STATE BANK OF INDIA: ACCOUNTS. NO: 10535483790. PANCHGACHHIA, BARAIPALI, INDESTRIES.ESTATE SAMBALPUR, ORISSA, INDIA.768150
Had the NCM been honest and objective in its fact finding it would have detailed out the influence of foreign sponsored Evangelical Activities. The fact that this kind of evangelical proselytization with the aid and support of foreign entities finds no mention in the NCM’s report dents the NCM’s credibility while ascribing all the blame to the VHP’s so-called “anti-conversion” campaign.
Offstumped Bottomline: There is a critical distinction between the religious freedom of the Minority Community to practice its faith and the freedom to aggresively proselytize flush with funds and support by foreign entities. The former is a fundamental freedom enshrined in the Indian Constitution the latter is a privilege that has been abused to the detriment of the social fabric of poor rural communities. As Orissa picks up the pieces from this spate of violence the Evangelical Ministries would do well to reflect on the damage done by aggresive proselytization.

Struggles for gaining an agreed definition of ‘Conversion as international terrorism’

Struggles for gaining an agreed definition of ‘Conversion as international terrorism’
The discourse on terrorism has largely been a transatlantic affair, paying little attention to other cultures beyond the Atlantic which is only one of the seven oceans of the globe.
In an article in International Affairs, Wyn Rees and Richard J. Aldrich (Wyn Rees and Richard J. Aldrich, 2005, Contending cultures of counterterrorism: transatlantic divergence or convergence?  In: International Affairs 81, 5 (2005), 905-923 (http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/soc/pais/people/aldrich/publications/fulltext.pdf)
argue:  “’Strategic culture’ remains an ill-defined and under-used concept…Strategic culture is based on the understanding that states are predisposed by their historical experiences, political systems and cultures to deal with security issues in a particular way. Other factors, such as its level of technological development, may influence a state’s strategic choices, but its preferences will be shaped most strongly by its past. These institutional memories will help to determine how threats are perceived as well as by conditioning the likely responses…First, international terrorism blurs the boundaries between external security and internal security: the perpetrators may originate abroad but commit acts of violence against citizens in the homelands of their targets. Second, state responses are likely to be mixed, ranging from the use of force against the sources of terrorism to increasing internal security measures such as law enforcement and judicial action…Traditional ways of addressing terrorism might be grouped into three broad categories: first, military-led approaches focused on a mixture of pre-emption, deterrence and retribution; second, regulatory or legal-judicial responses that seek to enhance the criminal penalties for terrorist activities and improve civil-police cooperation; and third, appeasing options, ranging from accommodation to concession. ” (ibid., pp. 906-908).
The chances of success of security agenda of transatlantic states are bleak because they have chosen to ignore the strategic cultures beyond the Atlantic, say the cultures of China or India or Indian Ocean Community of 59 states along the 63,000-mile Indian Ocean Rim.
The blind-sided approach governed by euro-centric or racist legacies of the colonial past leads the strategic analysts to ignore over two-thirds of the world population in the discourse on terrorism.
Take for instance, the dialectical differences even in agreeing on the definition of the term ‘terrorism’.  A good referenced summary is athttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Definitions_of_terrorism

The international community has adopted the following sectoral counter-terrorism conventions, open to the ratification of all states:
·         Analyzing these treaties, Andrew Byrnes observed that:
·         These conventions – all of which are described by the United Nations as part of its panoply of anti-terrorist measures – share three principal characteristics:
·         (a) they all adopted an "operational definition" of a specific type of terrorist act that was defined without reference to the underlying political or ideological purpose or motivation of the perpetrator of the act - this reflected a consensus that there were some acts that were such a serious threat to the interests of all that they could not be justified by reference to such motives;
·         (b) they all focused on actions by non-State actors (individuals and organisations) and the State was seen as an active ally in the struggle against terrorism - the question of the State itself as terrorist actor was left largely to one side; and
·         (c) they all adopted a criminal law enforcement model to address the problem, under which States would cooperate in the apprehension and prosecution of those alleged to have committed these crimes. (Byrnes, Andrew (2002). Apocalyptic Visions and the Law: The Legacy of September 11 A professorial address by Andrew Byrnes at the ANU Law School for the Faculty's 'Inaugural and Valedictory Lecture Series', May 30, 2002.2002, p. 11).
Terrorism is the deliberate use of violence aimed against civilians in order to achieve political ends.  (Boaz Ganor, 2005, The Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, "The Relationship Between International and Localized Terrorism", Vol. 4, No. 26, 28 June 2005).
A specific example of terrorism is proselytization indulged in by Christian faithful is use of violence against civilians in order to achieve the political end of Dominus Jesus (Dominion of Jesus).  Proselytization is the perpetration of a new war for souls.
One fails to understand why such a straightforward definition is not agreed upon by the international community. Unless the term ‘terrorism’ is so defined and an international convention against proselytization is adopted, the struggles of the combatants fighting to retain their strategic cultural identities will continue. These struggles are a continuation of the struggles marked by liberation movements seeking an end to colonial regimes most of which ended by the 1950’s resulting in the formation of over 100 nation-states as self-governing geographical entities.
In the context of the Hindu traditions which encompass over one billion people of the globe (that is, one-sixth of the world population), a rastram is a community of people, a path for achieving dharma, in two dimensions: internal, leading to nihsreyas (unity of the atman with the paramatman) and external, leading to abhyudayam ( welfare).
Hindus have a right to demand self-determination, as a continuum of the struggle against colonial dominance which resulted in unprecedented loot of their national wealth as documented by Angus Maddison. Restitution of this loot back to Hindus is a condition-precedent to any discourse in international for with the proselytizers. The minimum condition before any discourse can begin is an unequivocal declaration by proselytizers that proselytization is unethical, criminal conduct which is abhorrent. The declaration in words has to be shown in action by returning the colonial loot to the poor Hindus who have their dharma to protect and live by.
Struggle to gain an agreed definition of ‘Conversion as international terrorism’ is step one for the Hindus.
The struggles will have to continue for a protracted period. If need be, strategies of non-violent resistance which resulted in the end of colonial regimes may have to be further intensified.
There should be an Outrage for Dharmahttp://tinyurl.com/7aokr9r

Conversion as terrorism. Will the proselytizers ever give this up?

Conversion as terrorism

Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran implements the new proselytizer gang song

See: http://bharatkalyan97.blogspot.in/2012/02/evangelicals-vatican-reach-agreement-on.html Evangelicals, Vatican Reach Agreement on Proselytizing (June 2011)

After this event of June 2011, when Prozelytizers ganged up and agreed upon strategies to continue the new war for souls, some events unfolded in India five months later.
Cardinal Tauran, the point-man for the Dominus Jesus initiative of Ratzinger visited India to implement the newly agreed upon strategies.
The unethical conversion terrorism continues in a new garb. The cardinal and his troop followers even wear saffron scarves. Remember how Francis Xavier Clooney’s Boston College website showed him wearing saffron with a suryaprabha surrounding his head?
Nothing ever changes in the unchanging proselytizer agenda? After the earlier focus on Orissa, now the venue shifts to Karnataka. The buzzwords used are: ‘to reflect on the contribution of religion in Indian society’ and of course, ‘terrorism’.
Until the Proselytizer gang gives up conversion as terrorism, any dialogue or reports on Vatican radio or wikileak cables will only sound hollow and are utterly devoid of meaning, even if Cardinal Tauran learns to write in Gurumukhi this lifetime.

Meeting with religious leaders for peace and harmony between the Hindu, Christian and Muslim communities. "Let’s turn our back to hatred"
VATICAN INSIDER STAFF
romE
Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, visited India this week to meet some senior religious leaders of Hinduism, Sikhism and Islam. This was announced by Vatican Radio.
Cardinal Tauran was accompanied by the Secretary of the Pontifical Council which he chairs, Archbishop Pier Luigi Celata. His visit follows the Day of Peace desired by Benedict XVI that was held in Assisi on 27 October.
The conference which was held in Pune, near Bombay, concluded after three days with the aim "to strengthen the relationship" between Hindus and Christians and their "joint collaboration for justice, peace and harmony." According to Mgr. Thomas Dabre, Bishop of Pune, this meeting between a representative of the Pope and Senior Hindus, in order to promote harmony, sets a "precedence" and thus is an "historic"event.
The meeting was also an opportunity to reflect on the contribution of religion in Indian society, and to explain that violence and terrorism cannot be justified in the name of religion.
Before the assembly, composed of forty Catholic leaders and some thirty Hindu leaders, Cardinal Tauran said that religions are instruments of peace and unity, but was sorry to see that some groups still use violence in the name of religion, thereby creating mistrust between the communities: "It is urgent that we turn our backs on hatred," said the Cardinal. These words are particularly important in the context of inter-religious tensions that exist in some parts of India, as reported  by Eglises d'Asie, agency for Foreign Missions in Paris.
Attacks against Christian communities have in fact resumed in Karnataka, a state South of India regularly plagued by waves of collective violence. On 3 November  in Kankanady, the Catholic Church of Saint Alphonsa, of Syro-Malabar rite, was desecrated in the night by a group of young Hindus who wore saffron-colored bracelets. One of them was a guest of the student college located in the vicinity.
November 6, 2011
From Vatican Radio’s website (with kudos to the eponymous flower)
November 04, 2011) Vatican’s top official for inter-religious dialogue is on a visit to India to follow up on the impetus given by the interfaith peace meeting convoked by Pope Benedict XVI on Oct. 27 in the central Italian town of Assisi. Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, president of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue accompanied by Council secretary Archbishop Pierluigi Celata left for India on Friday to hold meetings with representatives of Hinduism, Sikhism, Jainism and Islam. Their schedule until Nov. 14 includes stops in Mumbai, Pune, New Delhi and Amritsar, home to the Golden Temple, Sikhism’s holiest shrine. Their schedule has been organized by the Indian bishops and includes a meeting with Muslim leaders in Mumbai on Sunday. A meeting with Hindus is scheduled from Nov. 6-10 in Pune and another meeting and a seminar with Sikhs is slated Nov. 11-12 in Amritsar. On Nov. 13 they are to hold a meeting and a seminar with Jains in the Indian capital before heading back to Rome.
This is grand, isn’t it?
He had the impetus. He just had to follow up on it….
Inspiring….
I just have an “impetus” to have a ten-day holiday in India, too. I should really, really follow up on it. Pity I am not so much into this kind of ecumenism, let alone have people forking out for the costs….
I can vividly picture Cardinal Tauran sitting there in Assisi with his faithful secretary, thinking: “wow, these people are really, really cool! Like, soooo cool! I must get to know them better, all of them! I mean, like, we can learn soooo much from Hinduism, Sikhism, Jainism and Islam! Perhaps I should pray in the Golden Temple? It would be, like, sooo cool!….”
Or perhaps he just wanted to profit from Assisi to take an exotic holiday the other side of the planet, with the programme looking very much like a sightseeing guide.
I truly hope the second hypothesis is true, and the Cardinal is just wasting the money of the faithful for his own pleasure.

Excerpts: …
1. (SBU) Summary: The Vatican is a leader or partner in many
inter-religious dialogues, primarily with the "Abrahamic"
religions - Islam, Judaism, and of course, other Christians.
Vatican leaders are also beginning to reach out to Asian faiths.
This cable describes the Vatican's primary, organized
dialogues. Septels: A) analyze why the Vatican pursues
interfaith dialogue, and B) propose USG-Holy See collaboration
in support of such discussions. End Summary.
Outreach to Asian Faiths

------------------------

9. (C) Despite the difficulty for the Vatican of finding common
ground with polytheistic religions, Holy See officials are
starting to do just that in an effort to support peace,
religious freedom, human rights, and local solutions to local
problems (see septel). Cardinal Tauran travelled to India in
June 2009 for initial dialogue with Hindus. Tauran's goal was
to go beyond the positive assurances that had characterized
previous meetings with Hindu leaders. Specifically, he sought
to bridge the gap between his Indian interlocutors' stated
goodwill and the continuing hostility toward Christians in parts
of India like Orissa, especially by some Hindu nationalists.

The Vatican also raised concerns about Indian anti-conversion
laws -- although they have not been enforced. Cardinal Tauran
also traveled to Japan in August 2009, to initiate discussions
with Buddhists and other Asian faiths.

10. (SBU) Comment: Tauran acknowledges quietly that the Vatican
has not paid sufficient attention to relations with Asian
religions. He is not an expert on polytheistic religions and is
unlikely to find -- or even seek -- common theological ground
with their precepts. Instead, as he and his Council increase
their outreach to these communities, they will challenge their
interlocutors to remove obstacles to the enjoyment of religious
freedom for all. End comment.

Comment-------

11. (C) The number and scope of the Vatican's inter-religious
dialogues is unparalleled by that of any other church or
organization in the world. The dialogues are already effective
in preventing or smoothing over misunderstandings and tensions.
The big question is how to translate into concrete actions the
high moral principles that the world's major religions bring to
the dialogue table. Septel includes proposals for USG
engagement with the Vatican in support of interreligious
understanding and action.

Disband proselytizer gangs.

Listen to this article. Powered by Odiogo.com

Right to 'human dignity' is as important as the right to freedom of speech. Disband proselytizer gangs.
Proselytizing is NOT an intersection of free speech and freedom of religion.
Proselytizing is an affront to human dignity.
There are proselytizing units prowling the globe. Prowling is to roam through stealthily, as in search of prey or plunder.
Both Christian mission and Islamic da'wah as proselytizing units are contests to gain converts at the other's expense. One has symbiotic relationship with colonialism and imperialism. The other has historical contexts and context of jihad, which date back to mediaeval barbarism and conquests destroying cultural edifices and markers.
(Elizabeth Scantlebury, “Islamic Da`wah and Christian Mission: Positive and Negative Models of Interaction between Muslims and Christians,” in Islam and ChristianMuslim Relations, Vol. 7, No. 3, 1996, 253269.) http://www.rashiedomar.com/publication-downloads.html?download=36%3Athe-right-to-religious-conversion-between-apostasy-and-proselytization
Right to change one's religion is religious freedom. But this does NOT mean granting somebody a right to ask that one changes his or her religion. That somebody, that proselytizer also indulges in coercion by offering food or medical aid. This proselytization is unethical, shameful and disgusting.
Freedom to proselytize is a fraudulent definition of freedom.
Freedom to proselytize is, in effect, a license to indulge in violence, terrorism of the worst kind. Many proselytizers operate beyond their state boundaries and thus indulge in international terrorism by seeking for example, to establish the Dominus Jesus (Dominion of Jesus). This is pursuit of colonialism and imperialism by other means other than direct dominance and ruling over the people whose cultural traditions do NOT recognize any dominion of any one.
"In Cantwell v. Connecticut, the defendant’s speech was directed toward the Catholic community, implying that they were evil, and Mr. Cantwell was speaking on the public sidewalk in a predominantly Catholic area and provoked hostility from others.128 Yet the Supreme Court reversed his conviction for breach of the peace. This is because free speech is actually a vital aspect of the dignity for all that is trumpeted so forcefully in the Declaration of Independence. The Supreme Court has recognized that the protection of freedom of expression is based on “the belief that no other approach would comport with the premise of individual dignity and choice upon which our political system rests.” (Cohen, 403 U.S. at 24; loc.cit., Kevin H. Theriot, Esq., Prince of Pauper? Religious proselytizing and the First Amendment, p.69.)http://www.speakupmovement.org/Church/Content/userfiles/prince_or_pauper.pdf
Proselytizers, as world citizens, have to accept the international covenant on civil and political rights (ICCPR) and the international covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR).
Proselytizers should concede that the actions of their predecessor proselytizers have been conditioned by the zeal to enslave or colonize cultures and to prevent free people from exercising their free will and to create states which are subservient to the Kingdom of Jesus or the Islam Nation.
International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Adopted and opened for signature, ratification and accession by General Assembly resolution 2200A (XXI) of 16 December 1966 entry into force 23 March 1976, in accordance with Article 49:
Article 18
1. Everyone shall have the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion. This right shall include freedom to have or to adopt a religion or belief of his choice, and freedom, either individually or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in worship, observance, practice and teaching.
2. No one shall be subject to coercion which would impair his freedom to have or to adopt a religion or belief of his choice.
3. Freedom to manifest one's religion or beliefs may be subject only to such limitations as are prescribed by law and are necessary to protect public safety, order, health, or morals or the fundamental rights and freedoms of others.
4. The States Parties to the present Covenant undertake to have respect for the liberty of parents and, when applicable, legal guardians to ensure the religious and moral education of their children in conformity with their own convictions. http://www2.ohchr.org/english/law/ccpr.htm
International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR)
Cultural Rights (1966), together with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (1966), make up the International Bill of Human Rights.
In accordance with the Universal Declaration, the Covenants Òrecognize that “... the ideal of free human beings enjoying civil and political freedom and freedom from fear and want can be achieved only if conditions are created whereby everyone may enjoy his civil and political rights, as well as his economic, social and cultural rights.”

Everyone has the right to take part in cultural life; enjoy the benefits of
Excerpts from a News Report:
Proselytization vs. Religious Freedom
Tuesday, August 30, 2011
Is proselytization, with its dubious history, an essential right within the broader realm of religious freedom?
“I think it is,” said Thomas F. Farr, a scholar from the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs, at a Witherspoon Institute seminar on Islam and Religious Freedom at Princeton Theological Seminary.
Many countries, such as Pakistan, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, and even Hindu-majority India and predominantly Buddhist Sri Lanka, have witnessed bloodshed over proselytization and resultant conversions.  Farr agreed that it is not just a “clean, clear, sweet-reason application of persuasion.”
“The history of proselytization is, to put it mildly, a checkered one,” said Farr, who worked with the United States Office of the International Religious Freedom in the 1990s.
“Proselytization over the centuries has been rapacious or deceptive or violent or otherwise an attack on human dignity rather than a furthering of human dignity.”
Farr does not discuss the modalities to undo the rapacious actions of the proselytizers nor does he discuss steps to prevent such predatory proselytizers.
Farr should accept that one way to stop predatory proselytization is to stop predatory practices of any kind, to recognize the past unethical actions, to vow NOT to repeat such unethical actions, to undo the damage done by impoverishing poor nations during colonial and imperialist forays of proselytizing eras by ensuring restitution of illicit looted wealth taken from such poor nations.
You want religious freedom? Sure, have it, practice it privately and do not make it a state or public or corporate enterprise with the evil designs of accomplishing Religious Dominions, after failing to establish such dominions through jihadist, colonial and imperialist enterprises, evidenced in the recent past centuries.
Notice that the Vatican wikileak cable refers to endorsement of USG for the subterfuge of interfaith dialogue. USG means United States Government. So much for secularism, separating the Vatican mission from the state.
In summary, right to 'human dignity' is as important as the right to freedom of speech. Disband proselytizer gangs. Allow the people of the globe just be with their inherent, inalienable right to human dignity, unhindered by dubious proselytizing falsely paraded as a religious freedom.
In the meantime, just return the colonial loot which rightly belongs to the poor people of the globe and respect their right to live in human dignity.
