Saiva Sarabam M. Pattamuthu M.Sc., B.T. Sankarankoil DOUBLE DREAMS For a long time, a problem has been worrying me. How can we preserve for posterity the thought-provoking treasure of Saiva literature of our beloved Guru, Siddhantha Panditha Booshanam Siva Sri. A. EASWARAMOORTHI PILLAI, founder of the renowned SAIVA SIDDHANTHA SABHA of Sankarankoil. Without fear or favour he has put forth revolutionary arguments with a view to protecting our ancient tradition of Saivism through his brave pen. His holy productions such as “Suya Mariyadha Iyakka Chooravali”, “Naadum Naveenarum”, “Siva Parathuva Nithchayam’’, “Saiva Aalayangalil Samskrita Manthirangale Vendum”, “Sankaranayinarkoil”, “Saiva Vaishnava Paavaigal Aaratchi” etc., should be preserved and uploaded in the computer as the printed books have become scarce. My dream of bringing these valuable publications into the arena of computer world has been, so to say, a mirage. Suddenly, there appeared a highly-educated gentleman with computer skills, thanks to the Holy grace of Lord Umapathi. He is none but Saiva Thiru. K. THIRUGNANA SAMBANTHAN MSc., MBA., MCA., MPhil., (PhD). He toiled day and night to upload all those publication one by one. Besides, he launched a new website in our Gurunathar’s name. His computer is fortunate enough to convey these scholarly literatures to the Saivites all over the world. They are preserved forever thereby fulfilling my dream. But of boundless affection towards me, he initiated another website in my name too. He took the formidable task of uploading all my simple video-lectures of the sacred PERIA PURANAM brought out by my grateful student, Saiva Thiru. R S. SUBRAMANIAN of Ambattur. Will the erudite writings of our esteemed Guru cross the borders of Tamilnadu? Is there any opportunity for Saivites sans Tamil knowledge to go through these works which will give a vivid picture of true Saivism? Will there be any way to propagate this essential concept of Saivism to people of other countries? Who will help this second dream of mine turn true? Once again, Lord Gomathi Sankareswarar is benevolent enough to introduce another gentleman, Saiva Thiru. M. Nagarajan, another computer giant living in Coimbatore with his strong knowledge of English, he has started the holy mission of translating all those works of unlimited value into English. I am jubilant to go through the translated works, one by one. This Nagarajan, so to say, the right hand of Saiva Thiru. K. Thirugnana Sambanthan is kind enough to help me in realizing my second dream. Let me conclude my preface by blessing both computer experts, Saiva Thiru. K. Thirugnana Sambanthan and Saiva Thiru. M. Nagarajan, two ardent devotees of Lord Shiva. The Almighty Lord Shiva has shown us the right way through the Saiva Legend Siddhantha Panditha Pooshanam A. Eswaramoorthy’s work “சைவாலயங்களில் சமஸ்கிருத மந்திரங்களே வேண்டும்”. This great work reached all the Tamil people who knows Tamil but I thought it should reach all the Saivites beyond language and geographical division. Lord Shivaperuman knows to do which things by whom. Saint Thiruvalluvar in Thirukkural narrates as
“வகுத்தான் வகுத்தவழியல்லால் கோடி கொடுத் தாலும் துயித்தல் அரிது”
One day when I was interacting with Mr. M. Nagarajan, I asked him whether he can translate this great Eswaramoorthy Pillai’s work. He readily accepted and spent several days fully concentrating on this work “Sanskrit Mantras in all Saiva temples - A Mandate!” and has given this translated work in a fine form with the guidance of Saiva Sarabam M. Pattamuthu. There are millions of Saivites in the world and Lord Shiva has selected Mr. M. Nagarajan to translate this wonderful work. I pray to the Almighty Lord Shiva to give him blessings to translate all the works of Siddhantha Panditha Pooshanam A. Eswaramoorthy Pillai.

At the outset, let me extend my unconditional surrender to ‘Lord Chidambareswara’ – Kripa Samoodram – The Ocean of Blessings!
After having sought the blessings of almighty Lord Chidambarewara, and the author of this compendium, Siddhantha Panditha Booshanam Shri Easwaramoorthy Pillai of Tirunelveli pettai, I had intended towards this endeavour with a clear predetermined mindset that, my duty is only to make an attempt to translate the compendium in a best possible manner in-line with the very little knowledge at my disposal. Hence, I have to play only the role of a Translator and not to that of an author. To me, any written work comprises of two important aspects namely viz., ‘What to write?’ and ‘How to write?’ Here, as a translator I have no role to play with regard to ‘What to write’ to the tune of 100% and when it comes to ‘How to write’, I have nothing to do, to the extent of 99% and the remaining 1% alone is there at my end to decide on the usage of vocabulary et al., provided which should reflect the intentions of the author exactly. Having lived 100% on the only 1% responsibility at my part, many things came into light for me during the course of the time with regard to Shri. A. Eswaramoorthy Pillai and his work ‘Saivaalayangalil Samaskirutha Manthirangale Vendum’ The distilled knowledge at his disposal, his eminence on research, erudite explanation of facts, unshakable arguing capacity, societal care, devotion and dedication towards Lord Shiva and Saivism respectively, prophetic excellence, penultimately; his palatable solutions the persisting and forthcoming problems, and for me personally, on how to structure the writing of a book and/or research article are to name a few.
For the successful completion of this work, the contribution extended by my Guru, and the distinctive disciple of Shri. A. Eswaramoorthy Pillai, Saiva Sarabham Shri. M. Pattamuthu MSc., BT., is quiet impeccable. He is kindly consented to accept the daunting task of proof reading and amending the necessary corrections, amidst his extremely punishing schedule. I do know that, how much paining it could have been for him in doing the corrections, purely owing to my incompetency with the English grammar.
For any action to happen there should be a cause. Similarly for this translation work too, there is a man behind the scene as a cause as well as an encouragement, by name Saivathiru. K. Because, at the end of the day, a translation is after all a translation and is certainly not equivalent to that of an exact –the very essence/message of this work – Indeed! 2. In only one place, I have given my personal note with due mentioning under the tag ‘My Personal Note’, which I felt absolutely necessary. 3. Likewise, in many places, you can find some Tamil phrases and related explanations, only in brackets with due mentioning. I have purposefully given the same, not because of the reason that I am from Tamilnadu but because of the sheer fear that I should not let you (the readers’) perceive differently in contrary to the exact intention/message of the author of this compendium. 4. Similarly, with regard to many of the poems, hymns, and verses of various Tamil literary works cited as references/examples, only the ‘trans-literation’ has been done, as against the elaborate explanation for the same, until and unless, it is specifically done so in the root version of this compendium. 5. On top of it all, I have highlighted the thrust points (to the best of my understanding) with necessary variation in font style, color and other formatting tools and techniques such as bullets and numbering, etc., which are, I am sure quiet useful for the readers, but against the Moolam – I admit.

I. THE ETYMOLOGY OF THE TERM ‘SAIVASTHAN’.
Mt. Kailash – the north, Cape Camorin – the south, Somnathpur – the west and Pushpanagar – the east. The above mentioned geographical locations constitute the boundary of a nation called “Barath”. The Sanaadhan Dharam of this nation is none other than ‘Saivism’. The following eternal verses of His Holy Highness Shri. Kachiyappa Munivar that “Mu(th)thevar Aathi Pulav(o)orgal Vinnin Muluthu Inbahattri Arulin Pitheri Ninra Munaivan Pathangal Peruguanbinodu Paniyum Attheyammana Uyar Bhatratham” holds a testimony to the above stated truth on boundary lines of Barath. Once, Swami Vivekananda proclaimed that: “Oh India! Forget not that, your ideal God is the great ascetic of ascetics – Umanath Shankar!” It is widely believed that the Aryans and Dravidians invaded India several centuries back and they have got immersed into this nation by settling themselves in the nation Barath to its length and breadth. Since their presence was felt all around, ranging from the great Himalayas to Cape Camorin, they imbibe on various factors together and so is their religious virtuousness, socio-cultural variables, arts and tradition etc., It was clearly evident that, Saiva Principles, devotion to ‘Shiv Ling’, were practiced so long ago, beyond the boundaries of Barath - ranging from Nepal (on the foot hills of Himalayas) to the Triconmalee (the peninsular region in Srilanka). The author of ‘Kalki’ on Dec 6, 1953 wrote in ‘Kalki’ that, the customary practice of importing the finest of ‘Rudhraksh’ (the prominent holy symbol of the Saivites) from the Nepal to Tamilnadu had been on for so long and is still in existence. This embarks on the basis for an undeniable fact the ‘The Whole of Bharath is Saivites (or) Saivasthan’.
II. THE PRIMARY TEXT
‘Senavarayam’ and ‘Nannool Vruthi’ were the two ancient predominant guides on Tamil grammar. Out of which, ‘Senavarayam’ went to claim that, the north-bound language by name ‘Sanskrit - is Common to all the states of Barath’. On the other hand, ‘Nannool Vruthi’ made it loud and clear that ‘Aryan language (ie., Sanskrit) – a vernacular for all the princely states of Barath as well as the Celestial world or ‘Devaloga’. Hence, it is quite obvious that, ‘Sanskrit Language – is a common parlance to all the princely states of entire Barath – needless to say – including Tamilnadu’. The four Vedas starting from the oldest one – The Rig; the twenty eight Shiva-Aagamas ranging from ‘Kaamikam’; were all made up of the holy language – Sanskrit. Those were the principal and primary text on Saivism. It was a blessing to the mankind from the Almighty – Lord Shiva. And hence, it deserves and occupies its own holy status. That is why the holy Thirumurais of Tamil language have never failed to acknowledge its eternal principal status. The terms such as ‘Aaryathodu Senthamilppayan Arihilaa Andhahar’, ‘Aaryan kandaai Tamilan kandaai’ from the Thirumurais’ are classic examples. Not limited to the above, there were myriads of terms in twelve Thirumurais of Tamil literature, which apprehend the cognazibality of terms used in Vedas and Aagamas and its concomitant sanity, which the language Sanskrit deserves. To name a few, ‘Marai Naalum Thampaattenbarr’, ‘Mikka Veda Meiynnool’, ‘Therulu Naanmarai’, ‘Pandaaya Naanmarai’, ‘Mudivillaa Vo(th)thu’, ‘Sruthimarai Naangaana Semmai’, ‘Aaranam Poliyum Pavalavaai’, ‘Vaidhikathin Valiyoluhaadhavak Kaith(th)avam’, ‘Marai Valakkamilaatha Maapaavigal’, ‘Pathiga Naanmarai’, ‘Irukku(Rig) Naanmarai’, ‘Thollirukku Marai Eth(th)ukanthu’, ‘Sandhoga Saamam Odhum Vaayaan’, ‘ Vedha Vedhaandhan’. ‘Maraiyeeraraiyaa Maraiyon’, ‘Sruthi Sarivurai’, ‘Vedha Vilupporul’, ‘Vedhantha Nilaikkuri’, ‘Deiva Naanmaraihal Poonda Theraanai’, ‘Mandhiramum Thanthiramum Thaame’, ‘Andar Thamakku Aagamanool Mozhiyum’, et al., All the above mentioned phrases were found in the 12 Thirumurais’ of Tamil literature, and the (astounding) message it reveals is this – the holy verses on Thirumurai’s have never failed to acknowledge the sanctity and supremacy of the principal text – Vedas and Aagamas – Which was indeed in Sanskrit language. Some people are of the opinion that, ‘Vaishnavam’ is also a religious sect, which originated in Tamilnadu. But, one must not ignore that, their own holy scripture ‘Naalaayira Dhivya Prabandham’, itself has sung in praise of the four Vedas, that too in sequential order and I quote ‘Rig, yajur, Sama, Veda Naanmalar ……..’. ************* III. SAIVA LAWS It is quite natural anywhere that, the common people went on to emerge themselves a ‘Temporal/ Common Laws’ (or ‘Lougeega Vidhi’ in Tamil) – with the help of the constitution, prevailing in the geographical location concerned, and it holds good within its jurisdiction only. And hence, the privilege of amending those Laws by making an addition, deletion etc., for the sake of ‘Common Good’ is entertained within the jurisdiction, and one must understand that, there is no harm in it. Because, after all the ‘Common Good’ is its ultimate objective. Whereas, on the other hand, there is another Law! That is a Religious Law! And of course, what I am pitching about here is – the ‘Saiva Laws’. The custodian of this ‘Saiva Laws’ is none, but the supreme of supreme powers – Lord Shiva. In other words, The 4 Vedas and 28 Shiv-Aagamas, which are termed as Principal (or) Primary Scriptures – are the ones, which serve as an immaculate rule of law, as far as ‘Saivism’ is concerned. Because of the above mentioned reason, the entire religious sect of Saivites, Saiva Temples, and its augmented Saiva Mutts(or Aadheenams) are expected to obey, facilitate, and to inculcate in themselves within the ambit of the ‘Saiva Laws’, as inscribed in the Primary Text – which culminates in the 4 Vedas and 28 Shiv-Aagamas. Because, at the end of the day, it was their primary duty and that is what they were all up-to, after all. The holy verses from Thirumurais such as ‘Meiy(ch)Churuthi Vithivaliyor Tholum’ can vouch for the astounding message explained above. Over the ages, innumerable human beings in the religious sect of Saivism were witnessing their birth, survival, growth, and death. But, given their age, they were only a few. The whole Universe will undergo a sea change over the ages. If we are to engage into the impossible act of quantifying this phenomenon – I am sure we will arrive at a conclusion that – the quantity will certainly outperform the size of the whole Universe itself. The point I am parroting out here is this; the primary text is meant to all those who had lived, are living and to live. Does it make any sense?, if someone, who are subject to change, and is about to befall under any of the above mentioned three categories, went on to incorporate a change, for which they have no such competent authority. Moreover, the very purpose of those scriptures is to pave the way for ‘Moksha’. The Holy Vedas’ and Shiv-Aagamas’ sanctity is here to stay! - Irrespective of the age, place and other such factors. I am absolutely baffled at how come the individuals, who aim to incorporate any changes in the primary text, can escape from retribution? And by intentionally failing to give its due importance, how can they derive the benefits out of it?
The Saiva religious institutions are many. At times, there might raise a need for streamlining the same. (But) what constitutes the ‘streamlining’? It should be an act of letting the above mentioned institutions to follow and befall with-in the ambit of Saiva Laws, as prescribed in Primary texts such as Shiv-Aagamas. How the streamlining can be done? (In order to know the answer for the same) Let us explore the Primary scriptures at first, and (purely) in-line with its prescription, incorporate the necessary changes (if needed). That alone is ethical. Even, if the Government intends to incorporate any changes, the rule remains the same. Barring which, whatever be the rest of the changes made, are only a ‘belie’ purely out of the unruliness and will certainly fetch only the impairment. ‘Saiva Laws’, ‘Saiva Sect’ and ‘Saiva Institutions’ are inter-dependent on one another. Its interdependency is all the more important and once the inter-dependency is lost, then the above mentioned (three things) sprinkle. As a result, it will end up being a feast for various anti-Saivites. Let the Saiva society understand the above truth and live just in-line with the laws prescribed in the Primary scriptures. That alone is ‘Saiva way of living’, and the noble deeds extended in-line with the same alone is deemed to be a ‘Saiva-Service’.
IV. THE ‘SO- CALLED’ MODERNERS As far as the princely state of Tamilnadu is concerned, there is no second opinion about the fact that, ‘all the Tamils were not Saivites’. There were a few Tamils, who often went on to ridicule the very essence of Saivism. Such ‘Anti-Saivites’ are myriad in numbers. Their evolution also dates back to an appreciable past. However, I wish to categorically place on record the inevitable fact that, “all Saivites in Tamilnadu were Tamils”, there were no such individuals with a different opinion. Moreover, it is absolutely impossible to point at someone, who is of the view that ‘I am an anti-Tamil’. There was great number of Tamil poetic saints, who had lived as a proof to the above mentioned view. Just think of them, and you come to understand that, most of them were Saivites. They gave their heart and soul towards contributing to the growth and development of Saivism by means of Tamil language. They are extreme intellectuals and have no hesitation in distancing themselves from the greedy anti-Saivite Tamils. Under any hard circumstances they never gave up their religious sect, Saivism. Such is their credentials. Besides them, as years pass by, there were numerous varieties of Tamils evolved now-a-days. To name a few, are the following: Atheist Tamils, Name-sake non-atheist (or) Sarcasm Tamils, Anti-Sanskrit Tamils, Anti-Brahmin Tamils, Any Sect is Our Sect Tamils, No Rituals to Own Tamils, and last but not the least, A set of Tamils who were absolutely hopeless under their tag name ‘Backward Class’ and are of the strong view that they couldn’t get what they need, by coping in line with the Saivites. So, they all were decided to stand united and aligned in one group. Unfortunately, a very few Tamil Saivites also have their association with this group for a short stint. What happened to those? They choose to read the holy scripts on Saivism available in Tamil language. They taste a little bit of Tamil in it by simply reading the scriptures selectively and chose to ignore the real essence of it – that is, Saivism. Ofcourse! Such kind of people, chose to adorn the holy ash, Rudhraksh, and even went on to the extent of disseminating lessons on their ‘So-called’ Saivism to a mass gathering in public. But, the most unfortunate thing is that, they pass-on their wrong perpetuated message vehemently, which may elaborate on Tamil Language, Hindu Religion but certainly not the Saiva Siddhantha Principles – The true path to attain ‘Moksha’. And from now on, I choose to call them as ‘So-called’ Moderners. The concomitant reason for the above mentioned act is nothing, but ignorance with regard to a basic understanding that: Tamil is a regional language; Saivism is a religious sect. A regional language is different from that of a religion, and in comparison; language is nowhere equivalent to a holy religious sect. Somewhere down the line, the people must understand, acknowledge and appreciate the inevitable difference exists between a religious sect and a regional language. Moreover fact of the matter is that, it is the language’s duty to act as an augmented product in stemming and facilitating a religious sect in its society. The ‘So-called’ Moderners obstinate to gave up their illusionary bonding with the regional language over the gleaned rich religious sect. They went on to claim anything and everything in the name of a language over a religion, because that is where they can gain their edge over others. Without any hesitation, I wish to express the bitter truth that, it is the biggest evil that ‘So-called’ Moderners are doing to the holy religious sect ‘Saivism’. Such ‘So-called’ Moderners are having a personal vendetta over particular caste, and the holy language Sanskrit almost belonged to that particular caste and is in practice with them over the others predominantly. That is how, the ‘So-called’ Moderners get detracted and so is their discord with that divine language – Sanskrit. That bitterness with the Sanskrit language paved the way for the conceit of Tamil language, over the years. When it prolonged for some more years, their grudge find its deep roots and they get themselves involved in to the act of degrading and demeaning the holy Vedas and Aagamas. It is those scripts, which serve as an edifice to the roots of Saivism. They intend to disgruntle the identity of the primary texts on Saivism. Say for an instance, if a wife chose to give away the sexual morality, is it conducive for her man to lead a perfect life? Will he be able to succeed in his Grihastham? – Not at all Possible! Similar is the act, which the ‘So-called’ Moderners aimed to involve in. In order to succeed in their effort, their primary motto is to destroy and dethrone the core primary text and its principal preaching from practice. Hence, all the Saivites and its augmented entities are hereby advised to distance themselves from them and not to let them pursue their devastating endeavor to take its course.
V. THE CLAMOUR FOR ‘TAMIL MANTRAS’
In India, the existence of various regional languages is a common parlance. Every state has its unique regional language. It is sometimes possible to witness the existence of two or more regional languages in the same state with equal rigour and a few more even be fatally overwhelmed. In the nation called Barath, the omnipresence of Shaivaalayas (ie., Vedic Shiv Temples) is crystal clear. Hence, ensuing activities such as, ‘Pradikshta’, ‘Utsav’, ‘Archana’ etc., is a routine. By this time, the chanting of holy mantras will certainly happen. Undeniably, all those mantras are obtainable only from the divine Vedas and Shiv-Aagamas and from nothing else. I wish to hear from the ‘So-called’ Moderners, Are people from any of the province or state of this entire nation is pitching for their own regional language Mantras? I am extremely confident that, the answer will be an astounding NO! Are they wrangling for the postulate of such regional language mantras in their respective province? – Certainly NOT! But, it is only in the sumptuous state of Tamilnadu, the ‘So-called’ Moderners are yelling for such disgraceful demands. If the ‘Moola Mantras’ are available with the Tamil Language, then obviously nothing will stop them for its usage. Since, it is not the case; they have decided to go on to the extreme of evolving new mantras. Does it make any sense? Let’s leave it to them. The most fascinating part of this story is that, there exists a duality in them. One group is of the opinion that, now the time has come to eradicate the entire Sanskrit Mantras and let us follow the Tamil verses as its replacement. In contrary, there were others, who feel sorry for the ‘Moola Mantras’, which are in Sanskrit and hence let it be, but in addition, we must sum up some more Tamil verses compulsorily. At this juncture, I am sure; the story of ‘an Arab and a camel’ will make sense here. The Arab, who gave its camel a small portion to occupy in his tent, citing rain; and later what happened to the Arab, is world-known. Hence, I choose not to repeat it here. But, one should not forget that, the perception of the latter category of people will end up like the above narrated story. Hence, in one form or the other, the latter are paving the way for the former category only. The ‘So-called’ Tamil Mantras and its accompanying clamour is nothing, but an illusion. Unfortunately, the illusion has caught strange-hold of the ‘So-called’ Moderners. Besides Saivism, in Tamilnadu, religious sects such as Vaishnavam et al., are also has its presence. This illusion will certainly latch on other religious sects too – I am deeply concerned for them too! “The Tamils were not able to understand the exact meaning of the Mantras, because, it got chanted only with the help of Sanskrit Language. Hence, we are screaming for the Tamil Mantras” – This is what the ‘So-called’ Moderners’ stand is! – Let me try to explore their stand in the next chapter.
VI. THE TRANSLATED MANTRAS
By diligently translating all the ‘Moola Mantras’ from Sanskrit to Tamil, one can easily evolve ‘Tamil Mantras’ – This is what the ‘So-called’ Moderners figment is! They must understand at the grass root level that, the term ‘Manthiram (or) Mantra’, itself is originated from the holy language Sanskrit. Manthiram (Mantra) = Mananam (Manana) + Thiraanam (Thraana) Manana - One who whole-heartedly thinks (believes) of this Thrana - Will get safeguarded.
That is what; the efficacy of a Mantra is all about. For the kind information to everyone concerned, let’s not forget an undeniable fact that, as far as the Tamil language is concern, the term ‘Mantra’ is indeed a ‘Loan Word’ and the exact translation for the Sanskrit word ‘Mantra’ is yet to be evolved. It’s Okay! Leave it apart.
Albeit, the ‘So-called’ Moderners choose to rejoice on having translated the So-called ‘Tamil Mantras’, I wish to hear from those ‘So-called’ Modern Pundits that – What justice can we do to the real ‘Moola Mantras’? Can we let it Evanesce? Isn’t it Perfidious? Moreover, I wish to know from them that, Are they of the view, It is not quintessential to protect the real Gospel (ie., Vedas and Shiv-Aagamas)?. Because, at the end of the day, the translation is after all a translation and is certainly not equal to that of an exact; and it suffers a limitation on being conducive to an addition, deletion, over-exaggeration, perpetuation et al., all depending upon the factors such as translator’s command over the two languages concerned, knowledge on the subject concerned, capability, devotion, motto and interest. Hence, it reflects on immense scope to subvert the originality of the real source (ie., ‘Moola’). On absence of the very Moola, it is indeed impossible to maintain its associated sacredness.
Ekaksharam, Panchaksharam, Sadhaksharam, Ashtaksharam, Navaksharam, Gayatri, Hamsa , Pancha Brahmam, Shadhanga, Hridhaya, Prasaadha, Sapthakhoti, Kala, Samhidhaa, Aashman, Biejam, Ashtothrasatham, Sahashram are to name a few among the most frequently employed mantras of utmost sanctity.
One can realize its saneness by benchmarking the same with the help of the holy Tamil Thirumurai Verses “Mikkav(a) Aagmathaar Poosai Vilaindhelundh Dhondrirendu Thakaanaan(ku) Kaindhaarettu(th) Thaamiraa Rirubathettir Rokka Mandhirangalaadhi Pala”
All the above mentioned mantras are of exemplary importance, when it comes to ‘Shaiva Anushtaanams’ such as Pradhiksha, Ashtabandhana and others, on the one-hand and Deeksha, Upanayaya, Vivaaha, Seemandha, Predha karya, Andhiyeshti, Siraatham etc, on the other hand. All those rituals are typical and are possible only with the help of Saiva–Kriyas. They were not fiddling! There is no existence of Saivism without the comportment of Mantra, Kriya and Bhavana. The three components were inter-dependent on each other. Moreover, nothing will survive in the absence of any one out of the three. If one get transformed from its present form, certainly it will imply on the rest of the two. So now I wish to ask over the ‘So-called’ Moderners that; are they still intending to translate the ‘Moola Mantras’ from Sanskrit to Tamil? Is it possible – after having learnt, what it takes to be a ‘Moola Mantra’? By the way, Ekaksharam, Panchaksharam, et al., were named after the numbers, on such measures only the mantras’ are made up of. (As we all know, ‘Eka’ meaning One, ‘Pancha’ meaning Five etc.,) If the ‘So-called’ Moderners once translated those mantras to Tamil Language, it will lead to compensate on the measures prescribed, which in turn leads to lose out its very name. Because, all those names have such a specific reason behind it and are justified by its measures. Is the humungous loss accrued out of such a mortifying act forgivable? The ‘So-called’ Moderners themselves have to think of this! Similarly, the 10th Thirumurai, ‘Thirumanthiram by Thirumoolar’, have some references about the various Chakras in our human system. I wish to have an answer from the ‘So-called’ Moderners, whether those chakra principles holds good in the translated version? Otherwise does it require to compensate us on the very own mantras by means of restructuring, in order to hold true to the Chakra Principles? Dear ‘So-called’ Moderners, please go through the same 10th Thirumurai, Thirumanthiram by Thirumoolar, which we are talking about, and you can find the following verses: 'Itta Vithallha Lidaiyu(Ndh) Tharathilae – Yattah(V) Vittathin Mele Uvvittuk Kitta Veethalkalin Mele Kromsiro Mittuva Mathir(K) Kirongendru Meveede’
Not limited to the above, you can find some more such verses from the holy ‘Thirumanthiram’. All those mantras were made up of Sanskrit only! The author, His Highness, Thirumoolar gave away those mantras – as it is! He never got himself involved into the abasing act of translation. Do you guess why? It needs to get chanted on ‘as is - what is’ rule! It is the immortal command of Thirumoolar to each and every one of us! That is the reason why, it is still and ever deserves to be called as ‘Thirumanthiram’ (or ‘The Sanctified Mantras’).
On a whole there were six ‘Athvas’! ‘Varnam’ and ‘Padham’ are the two out of those six. ‘Varnam’ denotes the written form, where as ‘Padham’ denotes the oral-form. In Sanskrit, there were 16 Vowel alphabets (Soul-letters) and 35 Consonant alphabets (Body-letters). And the most fascinating fact is that, all the 51 alphabets are of ‘Varna Aathvas’ and having this is as a base, 81 Padhams were evolved and all of which are in the nature of ‘Padhathvas’. One must understand that, it is humanely impossible to arrive at an exact Tamil translation to all these alphabets. However, you can evolve a Tamil word which gives an equivalent meaning, but it will certainly lose out on its ‘Padhaathva’ status. If you have any dubiousness: please be convinced that, those Sanskrit padhas which are made on the basis of Sanskrit varnas alone will constitute a ‘Padhaathva’ and nothing else. The above explained, erudite explanation is available with Shiv-Aagamas. Such is the gospel.
‘Hoonkaram’, ‘Ahangaaram’, ‘Mamakaaram’, ‘Hreengaaram’, are the Sanskrit terms used in our abstract identity. Similarly, ‘Omkaram’ is also of that kind. Whenever possible, the holy Thirumurais have no reluctance in using those terminologies as it is. If you look at the phrase ‘Omkarathu Utporulai’, it is quiet apparent that they are also referring to the ‘Sanskrit Mantras’.
Why can’t we imbibe ‘Kara-Shariyai’ (ie., Places of articulation) to our Tamil Language, whenever needed? Does there any ‘rule of law’? is the another question raised by the ‘So-called’ Moderners. Let me go deeper to answer them.
‘Shiv-Mantra’, ‘Uma-Mantra’, ‘Vinayaga Mantra’, ‘Skantha Mantra’, ‘Vishnu Mantra’, ‘Garuda Mantra’ are to name a few among the Mantras, which bear its respective name on the basis of respective God! Similarly, some more Mantras are those which stick to a particular religious sect, which are many. By the way, one should not forget the mantras, which rely on the basics of numerical measures such as, ‘Ekaksharam’, ‘Panchaksharam’ etc. To be precise, an explicit lesson that one must learn is this: “All these Mantras will never get collude at each other”.
Tumultuously, by having involved into a persuading act of translating Mantras to a single regional language, for an instance Tamil, will set the tone for other ‘So-called’ Modern Pundits from various regional languages are to burgeon and scream at this undignified act. Hence, it will lead us to attain the status of an embarrassing cult with myriads of newly evolved subaltern varieties such as, ‘Tamil Mantras’, ‘Telugu Mantras’, ‘Hindi Mantras’, ‘Gujarati Mantras’, et al.,. If such retardness gets personalized with the further demographic variables such as race, geographical location from the future ‘So-called’ Moderners, then the scenario become even worse. You are privileged to just imagine the emergence of ‘Arya Mantra’, ‘Dravida Mantra’, ‘Negro Mantra’ etc., on the basis of Race. Likewise, ‘Chennai Mantra’, ‘Lankan Mantra’, ‘China Mantra’ etc., on the basis of location. I once again repeat, we each one of us are to lament on the act of evolving mantras, since we are really deeply concerned about this ailment. Because, somewhere around the corner it may lead to communal clash within the religious sect. Therefore, this absurd act should not get entertained anymore!
The Phonology of a Mantra is: Uma Mayam (ie., Goddess Uma’s Form) The Meaning of a Mantra is: Shiva Mayam (ie., Lord Shiva’s Form) The above explained grammar is applicable only to those, which befalls within the ambit of Vedas and Shiv-Aagamas. Hence, the phonology and its concomitant Meaning are capable of attaining such divinity.
The So-called Tamil mantras which the ‘So-called’ Moderners are so fond of – are quiet staggeringly different. The profound duty on substantiating whether the ‘Translated Tamil Mantras’ will attain such divinity and efficacy to that of Sanskrit Mantras on the grounds of its phonology, (Or) in its Meaning, (Or) in the combination of both? - The answer for the same is due and rests with the ‘So-called’ Moderners.
If the ‘So-called’ Moderners are of the opinion that, their So-called Tamil Mantras’ efficacy and divinity is because of its Tamil Syllables (phonology), certainly rest of the people in India such as Telugus, Malayalees, Konkans, Maratis, et al., will choose not to be in line with the ‘So-called’ Moderners. Because, they too will claim that, their regional language is not a spineless over Tamil.
If the ‘So-called’ Moderners choose to nod to their second option that, their So-called Tamil Mantras’ efficacy and divinity is due to its Meaning, then the fundamental problem arises again. The very word ‘Mantra’ itself is a loan word from Sanskrit to Tamil language. Hence, the affiliated Mantras are also, an adoption to the Tamil language (which is a mere regional language for the state of Tamilnadu) from the divine Sanskrit, which has had its potency extending the whole of India.
Why to let them be unanswered about their possible third and final option too? If the ‘So-called’ Moderners went on to claim their extreme proximity that their So-called Tamil Mantras’ efficacy and divinity is due to its Syllable as well as Meaning! Then the simple rebut question is this: Why the ‘Moola Mantras’ are not sanctified in Tamil by Lord Shiva? (Or) Do we have such? If it is so, then everything, which we all of us are yelling out with different opinions, is of absolute no use!
At this point of time, let me directly deliberate on against the ‘So-called’ Moderners with my fundamental queries. One can convert the poetry into prose. This is also a translation. As a matter of fact, all the holy Thirumurai’s beginning with Thevaram et al., are in the form of poetry only! There is no second opinion in this regard. In future, if some (second generation) ‘So called’ Moderners get evolved and derisorily involved into the daunting task of translating such sacred poems into a mere contemporary prose; Does it seem Okay for the present day ‘So-called’ Moderners in Tamilnadu, who are batting for the ‘So-called Tamil Mantras’? Well, in line with your view it will absolutely be easy, even for a layman to understand the essence of the holy Thirumurais’. If the (second generation) ‘So called’ Moderners choose to express their soulful Bakthi by singing the translated prose content (indeed! without any appropriate syllable), in praise of the Almighty, instead, chanting the real Thirumurai hymns(ie., Moolam), with its appropriate syllable(syntax about ‘The Pitch’) as inscribed in each and every hymn in the Thevaaram, Thiruvasagam et al.,. Will the present day ‘So-called’ Moderners be absolutely over the moon?, Are they be so satisfied and enormously exuberant with their (second-generation) ‘So-called’ Moderners for having done such an unforgivable, outrageous act in order to palpate the illusionary ‘So-called’ immersed or soulful Bakthi?
My beloved ‘So-called’ Moderners, please let out your opinion!
Are you going to say a disgraceful YES! in respect of my question that the real ‘Moolas’ and its ‘Translation’ are one and the same? So, are you thinking of entertaining and extending a red carpet welcome to your fellow followers (ie., second-generation ‘So-called’ Moderners) in their endeavor to proceed on with their preposterous, farcical act, such as the one raised above? There were a good number of Saivites, who attained liberation by showing their sacred devotion to His Holy Highness ‘Thirugnana Sambanthar’, the divine-child, who had contributed to the majestic ‘Thevaram’. Similar is the case, with regard to another foremost supernatural worshipper of Lord Shiva, His Holy Highness ‘Manickavasagar’, who gave this world a supernatural work, entitled ‘Thiruvasagam’ or ‘The Sacred Utterances’. As several decades pass by, a Jewish Pope has translated the same into his mother tongue English, after having himself deeply immersed into it out of his inexplicable love with the holy ‘Thiruvasagam’. Dear ‘So called’ Moderners, let us consider a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in London. According to your standpoint, ‘Only the translated English version of the holy Thiruvasagam, should get chanted or hymned there – Isn’t it?’ Because, at the end of the day, according to your outlook, “What the Tamil language means to the Tamils will certainly be equal to that of an English to the English men and women”
Hence, to the ‘So called’ Moderners, my righteousness is this: The divinity that one can attain by chanting the exact Thiruvasagam (ie., Moolam) written out by the St. Manivasagar is of no difference when it comes to chanting the translated version of Thiruvasagam, as translated by the Jewish Pope.
Will it be endurable and/or digestible to all the ‘So called’ Moderners? Not limited to the above, I chose to throw a light upon another area by means of asking this following question: In the opulent state of Tamilnadu, the custom of idolizing and worshipping St. Manivasagar is quiet common and even well received. Can we replace the idols of St. Manivasagar with that of a Jewish Pope, that too inside a Shiv- Aalayam (or ‘Temple’)?
Because, according to the ‘So called’ Moderners’ logic, the real Thiruvasagam in Tamil to that of its translated version is one and the same and hence there is no harm in replacement. (As is the case, wherein, they opine that, the Sanskrit Moola Mantras be replaced with the So-called Tamil Mantras). So is the case with the authors – too! What is the principle, which is preventing the ‘So called’ Modern Pundits in extending their devoted, ‘So-called’ immersed Bakthi to the Jewish Pope in the place of St. Manivasagar. After all, the Jewish Pope is nothing, but a translation of St. Manivasagar – in their rule of Law!
The utterance (or ‘Vaakku’ in Tamil) is of three types. Of which, the first and foremost is the “Celestial Utterance (or) Gnana Vaakku”. Those which have been uttered by the ‘Supreme of Supreme Powers – Lord Shiva’! They are termed as Veda–Aagamas (A bundle of 4 Vedas and 28 Shiv-Aagamas).
The next type is the “Experiential Utterance (or) Anubhav Vaakku”. The experiential utterances let out after personally experiencing the Lord Shiva (Shiva Anubhav) and attaining ‘Moksha’ in their lives by the foremost – four – fantabulous saints namely, Thirugnana Sambanthar, Sundarar, Thirunaavukkarasar, and Manivasagar will constitute this type.
There is another category – The third and final category. It is called as “Inexperiential Utterance (or) Prakrit”. The utterance let out by the commoners such as me, in the form of my books. (as described in the real version/ ‘Moolam’ of this transcript in Tamil by its author His Highness Siddhantha Panditha Booshanam. A. Eswaramoorthy Pillai of Tirunelveli Pettai.)
My Personal Note: When an eminent scholar such as Siddhantha Panditha Booshanam. Shri. A. Easwaramoorthy Pillai, chose to label him as ‘prakrit’, I am absolutely bemused at, on how to categorize and/or place, me too, on the same lines. But I have been left with no option, as no further categorization.
When we consider the first two categories – namely viz, Celestial Utterance and Experiential Utterance, the phonemes emitted by it are in the nature of ‘Celestial Syllables’ or ‘Blessed Phonemes’. In contrary, the Inexperiential utterance or Prakrit emits the ‘Illusionary Syllables’ or ‘Maya Phonemes’.
The Sanskrit mantras are made up of Celestial Utterances only. Hence, they reflect upon only on the ‘Celestial Syllables’ or ‘Blessed Phonemes’, That is the reason why, it has gained its divinity on being capable of granting Siddhis and Mukthis. What do the ‘So called’ Moderners will achieve by translating those Mantras? Nothing, but demeaning and disgruntling its efficacy, by means of converting those as ‘Illusionary Syllables’ from its existing ‘Celestial Syllables’ status. Hence, it is categorical that, it will not certainly yield the desired result. Similar will be the result, if we choose to replace the holy Veda – Aagamas (made up of Sanskrit) with that of holy Thirumurais’ (made up of Tamil) in order to perform the various daily rituals and Poojas in temples. Hence, at all Saiva Temples, we must emphatically stop using the Translated Verses with illusionary syllables to perform Pooja and other rituals in the place of Sanskrit Mantras with Celestial syllables.
VII. THE VERSES FROM TAMIL THIRUMURAIS’ AS MANTRAS
Commencing with the Thevaram by His Holiness, St. Thirugnana Sambanthar, the eminence of holy Thirumurais’ has its bag full of Scared Verses. Of which one can choose from, to perform their rituals in temples as against the Sanskrit Moola Mantras. Tamil Mantras may comprise of any of the following: such as viz., a poem of decadal (or ‘Pathigam’, meaning a set of 10 poems each), a single poem, a footstep of any poem, any flow of utterances, or even a collection of single words from various verses of holy Thirumurais, which are coined to one. This is what ‘So-called’ Moderners’ statement is!
In Tamilnadu, there were multitudinous of Temples belonged to the Saiva Religious sect, out of which almost all are dedicated to Lord Shiva – as its main deity. Moreover, it is irrefutable that, the chanting holy Thirumurai hymns were on in practice for so long. One who does this job in all Shiv–Temples is the exclusive chanters (‘Othuvaars’ in Tamil), who had diligently studied its nuances on phonology. This practice is a customary and it dates back so long ago. Every temple has had its various deities. All those deserved to get its due fulfilled on day-in and day-out. One such act is the Chanting of holy Thirumurai hymns.
When the above explained is being the ground reality! – I just don’t know, why the ‘So-called’ Moderners’ principle sounds strange with their anticipation that, one can elevate the status of Thirumurai hymns to that of Mantras, simply by means of yelling for the same.
For everyone, it is mandatory to follow the Celestial Utterance (or) Gnana Vaakku. The cycle of ‘birth-death’ will chokehold those, who fail to adhere to it. The distinguished authors of Thirumurais’ have learnt this invaluable lesson to its best in the previous births. In addition, they stood up to it. That is the reason why, they went to attain ‘Mukthi’. They realized the unquestionable truth that, the Veda-Aagamas are the ones to learn, out of their experiential learning. Hence, this irrefutable truth reflects upon their respective hymns or Thirumurais’, which nothing but their experiential utterance made up of the celestial syllable. The hymns of Thirumurais are thousands in numbers. Then and there, we can witness some references about the authors, which are given away by them, ‘Naanmarai (Y)odhiya Gnanasambanthan’, ‘Naanmarai (Y)angamodhiya Naavan – Vand(h)rondran, ‘Sezhumarai Theriyum Thigal(k) Karoovooran’, ‘Maraivala Vaali’, ‘ Maasilaa Marai PalaVothu Naavan VannPurushothaman et al., By going through the above with due diligence, it is clearly visible that, they were ‘Masters of the holy Veda–Aagamas’, obviously in the Sanskrit language.
Similarly, they let out their opinion with regard to their own hymns also (which are in Tamil language), and to depict the same, here are the few examples. ‘Aaranam Polindha Pavala Vaai Sundara(v) Amudhamooriya Tamil Maalai’, ‘Aara(th) Thaen Paruhi Arundhamil Maalai Kamalavarum’, etc., Having documented that, the moral is this: The holy Thirumurais aim to reflect upon the message, as uttered out in the Veda-Aagamas. However, in one sense, all the Sainted Poets, who have contributed to the holy Thirumurais, have unanimously decided to be inline one important point with enough necessary caution. What is that point? They never went on to the extreme of claiming that, the sacred verses let out by them are “either Vedas or Mantras”. They were deeply humble and are never of the opinion that their Thirumurais are an equivalent to that of Veda-Aagamas.
Contrastingly, all the contributors of Thirumurais were enthralled with the other view (as against the ‘So-called’ Moderners’). That view is quite visible in the phrases such as ‘Manthira Vedangal’, ‘Manthira Maraigal’, ‘Manthira Naan Marai’, ‘Manthira Maa Marai’, etc., The holy Sanskrit Vedas are the only roots (ie., ‘Moolam’ or ‘Aagaram’) to every Mantras. The Thirumurais were nemine contradicente to the above mentioned incontestable truth!
The holy Vedas are in the form of Mantras only. Hence the name – Mantras, for Vedas too! To be convinced, please note the sacred phrases ‘Manthiramum Thanthiramum Thaame’. In which, the term Manthiram (or Mantra) denotes – The Vedas and the phrase Tanthiram (or Tantra) denotes – The Aagamas. For instance, there is another reference in the 10th Thirumurai, which reads as ‘(I)Riguruvaa (m)Ezhil Vedham’ where the term ‘(I) Riguruvaa’, a metaphor denotes ‘in the form of Mantra’ (ie., ‘in the form of Rig Veda’).
Not limited to the above, there were legion of references in the holy Thirumurais in connection with the term Rig Veda/Vedas. To benchmark a few are, ‘Nandrumigu Naanmalaraal Nallirukku Manthiran(g) Kondu Ondri Valipaadu Seiyaluttravan Ongu (U)yinmel Kandrivaru kaalan Uyirkandu Avanukk(u) Andralithaan – Kondrai malar Ponsoriyum Koliliyem Perumaane…’, ‘Vedhathin Mandhirathaal Venmanalae Shivamaaga(bh) Bhothathaal Valipattaan’, ‘Nalamali Tharumarai mozhiodu, (Where, Irukku denotes ‘The Rig Veda’ and the Tamil version of the term ‘Veda’ is ‘Marai’ ). It will be even more amusing if you give a special notice to the terms ‘Nallirukku’ and ‘Nalamali Tharu Marai’ respectively. The words ‘Nall’ (meaning ‘The Best’) and ‘Nalamali’ (meaning ‘Having the capability to offer the best’) are to embark on its associated grandeur. Please do consider the grandeurs too. By the way, there is another phrase called ‘Bhothathaal Valipattaan’; where Botham means ‘Gnana’. Offering prayers with the help of Celestial Syllables (or) Veda Mantras is its explanation. “Offering prayers with the help of Prakrit Utterance (ie., Any form of translated verses, along with its Maya Syllables will constitute ‘Prakrit’) is nothing – but a superstition”. Such superstitious act is a mere resemblance and shall not deem to be a Pooja. Only the Sanskrit Mantras are Mantras. Offering prayers by means of chanting the appropriate Sanskrit Mantras alone will constitute ‘Pooja/Prarthana’ or ‘Archanai’ (in Tamil). They drive out our fear for death. This bears testimony to their greatness.
Lord Shiva blessed some of his foremost worshippers with a divine will to, ‘Give up their fear of death’. They ‘Gave-up’! For which, He prescribed the appropriate Mantra from the holy Veda-Aagamas. Such is its divinity! And the parallel Thirumurais have never failed to sing in praise of such sacred Mantras.
Hence, there is no existence of ethics in Saivism without its Veda-Aagamas. By the way, the entire Tamil Thirumurais along with its authors never belie on these lines. Because, only those, who are humble enough to adore, are the ones to use. Only such faithful individuals alone can reap the benefits of it. Those who choose to skip on the above mentioned path are - the diabolic! No matter, whatever the new such varieties the ‘So-called’ Moderners try to impart – It will like only to get away from them. The ‘So-called’ Moderners’ method of offering prayers to God with the help of Tamil Thirumurai hymns are mere hollering! Because, at the end of the day, ‘one had to be – What one had to be’!
I mean to say that, the ‘Gnana Vaakku’ or ‘Celestial Utterance’ needs to be a Celestial Utterance. Similarly, ‘Anubhav Vaakku or Experiential Utterance’ needs to be an Experiential Utterance. Shifting of its ‘Sthanas or Status’ from either the primary to secondary or the vice-versa is such a outrageous, indecorous act, which the ‘So-called’ Moderners intend to cause, by means of translation or applying the translated verses for performing Poojas in Saiva Religious Temples. It is a customary practice of Saiva Religious Temples that the rituals are performed with the chanting of Sanskrit Mantras at first, and in sequel to the same, the holy Thirumurai hymns will follow. Dear ‘So-called’ Moderners, please see to it.
Vedas are made up of clusters of ‘Mantras of Decadal’ (a set of 10 poems each, as termed as ‘Pathigam’ in Tamil). Similar is the rule, with the ‘Thirumurais’ of Thevaram’ too. Upon which, one can easily understand that the Thirumurais’ of Thevaram are on the parallel lines to that of Veda-Aagamas.
“Archanai(p) Paatte(y) Yaahum” meaning “Archana or Offering Prayers is by song only” is the utterance of 12th Thirumurai. Hence, what’s wrong in adopting the Thirumurais for chanting, while performing Poojas?
The ‘So-called’ Moderners once raised this question. My answer to the concerned ‘So-called’ Moderner is this: Please be updated that, the particular verses you were referring to is the component of 7th Thirumurai.
The above considered verses were uttered out by His Highness Sundaramoorthy Naayanaar. Was there are any reference available elsewhere in any of the Tamil literature that, His Highness Sundaramoorthy Naayanaar has performed his ‘Pooja’ in any of the Saiva religious temples by means of chanting his own, or any other translated Tamil verses? – Certainly, NOT AT ALL! Hence, their above referred volition will not hold good in line with their own gestates!
His Highness Sundaramoorthy Naayanaar belonged to the ‘ARCHAKAR CASTE (or SIVAACHARIAR/ BHATTAR)’. It was Lord Shiva’s Holy Order to Sundarar that “You need not perform ‘Archana’ (meaning Temple Pooja); you keep singing your hymns in praise of me; I shall accept those in lieu of ‘Archana’.” The ‘So-called’ Moderners must understand that, the above such acceptance is extended only to His Highness Sundaramoorthy Nayanaar by means of Holy Order. However, the message is loud and clear: “All the Songs are not meant for Archana”. In contrary “Sundarar’s Hymns’ themselves were Archanas (as treated by Lord Shiva, by means of his Holy Order)”.
Further, ‘Kaivalya Navaneetham’ and others were to name a few among the ‘Maya Vaadha Sect’ literary works. Likewise, ‘Prabhu Linga’ and others were a few to denote among the ‘(A)Ikkiya Vadha Sect’ literary works. (For your kind information) Vadaloor Ramalingam Pillai is not a Saivite, which he himself uttered out in public. However, few of his works were also there. By the way, myriads of Tamil literary works are always on the rise, and the list includes the work of people like mine too. From which also, the ‘So-called’ Moderners can derive a humungous of terms in praise of Lord Shiva.
To perform daily rituals including Poojas in a Saiva religious temples, Can we compile the list of terms in praise of Lord Shiva, from all the available sources at least with the help of above mentioned possibilities – in order to coin them into a single Archana?
I wish to hear from the ‘So-called’ Moderners – in this regard! Whether Tamil Mantras can be compiled from the above mentioned various songs and used for Archana? If they say YES! – They mean to opine that, those ‘coined sentences’ are equivalent to that of holy Thirumurais. (This will be an absolute ridicule). If they opt for NO! – It’s even worse! According to their logic, they fail to exuberate and enounce on their own Tamil language and its accompanying preponderance. In Tamilnadu, certainly, the Saiva religious temples came first. Then came the Thirumurais. During those ancient days, which Thirumurais have found its place, to get chanted in order to perform the Poojas? Just like the present days, only with the help of those Sanskrit Mantras, the rituals were having performed on those ancient days. Moreover, there were no such period called ‘those ancient periods’, which we are talking about. Even, we thought, if it was so, then it was certainly be such – Without the very existence of Saiva religious temples.
