SC rejects univ plea against Alagiris engineering college
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
Chennai: The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected a special leave petition (SLP) filed by the Anna University of Technology (AUT) against a Madras high court order passed in favour of an engineering college run by Union minister M K Alagiris family. M K Alagiri Educational Trust has established Dhaya College of Engineering at Sivarakottai near Thirumangalam in Madurai district.Though the college had obtained the AICTE approval on May 10,2012,the AUT refused affiliation citing three shortcomings.First, the college canteen was found too close to classrooms.Second, the library was found to house 179 books less than what had been claimed by the management, and third, the number of college buses was less than required. The trust approached the Madurai bench of the high court when the university officials did not come for campus inspection. The bench directed the university to conduct inspection in respect of the three issues raised by it and pass orders before May 31.The university then filed an SLP,seeking to conduct inspection afresh. When the petition came up for admission on Wednesday,a division bench comprising Justice K S Radhakrishnan and Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar rejected the universitys stance and said the state government does not have a say in the matter. While senior counsel Mukhul Rohtagi and additional advocate-general Guru Krishnakumar represented the Tamil Nadu government, senior counsel PWilson appeared for the college. It was the colleges stand that in spite of AICTE approval for admission of students for the academic year 2011-2012,admissions could not be done for 300 seats in five engineering branches due to the adament attitude of the university.Following a complaint from the university on August 30,2011,the AICTE inspected the premises on April 17 this year, received explanation from the college on May 2,and granted approval for student admission on May 10. After the AICTEs clean chit, the university cannot raise doubts over documents furnished to the all India body,it was submitted.
Chennai: The DMK has already begun preparations to give a warm welcome to former telecom minister A Raja, who would be returning home more than a year after he was arrested in the 2G spectrum case. With the CBI court relaxing his bail conditions, the former minister will arrive in Chennai on June 8 and will be received by party seniors and supporters. The partys response underlines Rajas growing importance among various family factions within the DMK. DMK chief M Karunanidhi will be in Chennai to receive his once favourite confidante. When reporters asked him as to what kind of reception he would accord Raja, the DMK chief shot back,As I am also a journalist,I know why you are asking this question. You want to misinterpret my answer.Party sources said Karunanidhi might get Raja to visit his Tiruvarur constituency along with him on June 13. But it is DMK treasurer M K Stalin who is proving to be Rajas newfound ally. The partys potential successor has personally ensured that a decent reception is being organized for Raja, who spent nearly 15 months in prison.Stalin also confirmed to party MPs his plans to visit New Delhi and attend a dinner hosted by Raja in the capital. He left for Delhi along with wife Durga on Wednesday evening.Union minister S Jagathrakshagan,DMK MPs E G Sugavanam and Vasanthi Stanley accompanied him. Raja is hosting a dinner for Stalin and his wife at his Motilal Nehru Marg residence in Delhi. All the MPs and Union ministers have been invited for the dinner. It will be a major boost for Raja as Stalins decision to attend the dinner is a rare gesture.Rarely does he visit party leaders along with his wife, said a DMK MP.Party seniors feel Stalins visit to Delhi would convey a strong message to his followers across the state.Ironically, sibling rivalry in the party is helping Raja regain his importance in the DMK.All factions within the family want Raja on their side, admitted a senior DMK leader. While Raja met M K Alagiri in Delhi soon after his release on bail on May 15,Kanimozhi and Dayanidhi called on him at his residence.Stalin sent his greetings through parliamentary party leader T R Baalu. He also called Raja over phone while he was on a cruise during a Europe vacation.Stalin, party sources say,is keen to get Raja on his side.In the past, relations between Stalin and Raja had been rather strained.Common friends had been working to bridge differences between the two leaders, said the DMK leader. Party seniors point to the timing of Stalins visit.Raja will reach Chennai on June 8 and he will be in the state up to June 30.But Stalin opted to fly to Delhi on June 6.He wants to express his solidarity with Raja and he wants this message conveyed to party cadres, said a former minister. The senior leader pointed out that Stalin had heaped praise on Raja during a visit to Nilgiris in April and even referred to him as his brother.

CBDT on Kalaignar TV payoffs (CBDT to JPC 18 July 2012) - Angered by Chacko speak DMK skips Delhi dinner Santwana Bhattacharya / ENS - NEW DELHI 27th July 2012 07:39 AM Chacko, in his media briefing, quoted a point from the CBDT-IT’s presentation, in which it was alleged that Kalaignar TV had received Rs 52.25 crore from 19 ‘fictitious’ Kolkata companies. PTI File Photo
In the midst of the much-hyped tussle between the Congress and the NCP, the DMK’s cold war with the grand-old party, evident from its absence at the Prime Minister’s dinner for newly-elected President Pranab Mukherjee, was hardly noticed.
But, for the past few days, the UPA’s southern ally was no less agitated, with the reason being Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) chairperson P C Chacko’s candid briefings to the media on the 2G probe.
On July 18, Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) chairman Laxman Dass and Income Tax top-honchos made a detailed presentation before the JPC probing the 2G scam, tracing the money trail of the Rs 230.31 crore payback by the DMK-family owned Kalignar TV to scam accused Shahid Balwa’s company.
Finance Secretary R S Gujral was also present during the presentaton.
The same evening after the JPC meeting, Chacko, in his media briefing, quoted a point from the CBDT-IT’s presentation, in which it was alleged that Kalaignar TV had received Rs 52.25 crore from 19 ‘fictitious’ Kolkata companies.
This was part of the Rs 230.31 crore paid back to Balwa so that the 2G kickback could be shown as a loan. In the presentation, accessed by Express, the 19 Kolkata companies were shown on a big black star, without names mentioned.
Sources revealed that the I-T officials present in the JPC meeting corroborated the point made by
the CBDT chairman and said that the whereabouts of all the 19 Kolkata companies were checked address-wise and were found to be ‘non-existent’.
Also, the tax-probe showed that there was no record of any I-T returns of these fictitious companies.
Since such a revelation could have a direct impact on DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi’s case that was pending before the court, DMK leaders took up the matter with the Congress top-brass.
An angry DMK parliamentary party leader T R Baalu is said to have rushed to Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s political secretary, Ahmed Patel’s residence, to take up the matter, late on July 18 night.
An immediate gag order was put on Chacko, the effect of which was apparent at the next JPC meeting after which Chacko took a flight back home avoiding a press briefing. He, however, maintained that he had not been asked to keep mum and that a parliamentary panel chairman could not be given directions by anyone, which includes the PM.
But what Chacko had revealed to the media was just the tip of the iceberg. The entire CBDT presentation showed that Kalaignar TV had raised money from various sources to pay back Balwa’s company, including Rs 60 crore (as advertisement advance from BCCI chief N Srinivasan’s India Cements Ltd, Rs 24.50 crore from Vijay Mallya’s United Spirits and Rs 30 crore as trade advance and Rs 28 crore as loan from Shaw Wallace).
What’s even more startling is that Sharad Kumar, Director, Kalaignar TV Ltd, had raised money selling off his own mutual funds - Rs 0.3 crore of HDFC MF, Rs 0.5 cr from Franklyn Templeton MF, Rs 1.35 crore from Axis Bank, Rs 4.78 crore from ICICI MF and Rs 2 crore from Franklyn Templeton MF, to make the Balwa transaction look above-board.
Money was also pumped in from Anjgam Films Pvt (Rs 69.61 crore), Saphire Media and Infrastructure Ltd (Rs 83 crore) and Gemini Industries (Rs 8.25 crore).
The 19 ‘fictitious’ Kolkata companies had channelised Rs 52.25 crore through Saphire Media and Infrastructure.
Differences Over Selection Of Youth Wing Functionaries
V Mayilvaganan TNN
Madurai: The rift between Union fertilisers and chemicals minister M K Alagiri and his younger sibling and DMK treasurer M K Stalin is far from over. The rift was evident on Sunday when supporters of Alagiri boycotted an interview session conducted by Stalin to select the partys youth wing functionaries for the Madurai urban district unit.Around 200 DMK youth activists, including the incumbent district secretary G Thalapathi, participated in the session in Tirunelveli.Sources in the party, however, said all who participated in the interview belonged to the faction led by Stalin. Besides Thalapathi as Stalin is popularly called by his supporters, former state minister Pon Muthuramalingam, former zonal chairman V K Gurusamy, former mayor Kulandivel, youth wing secretary Jayaraman visited Tirunelveli. The presence of these leaders belonging to the Stalin faction has infuriated many leaders and supporters having allegiance to Alagiri. These leaders have already been sidelined within the party in Madurai by the Alagiri faction, which enjoys majority in the area, said the source. Only the DMK officebearers in Madurai should propose name of party men for the posts in ward and branch units. We have not proposed anyones name. All of us are here in Madurai, said an Alagiri supporter. All the hopefuls of youth wing posts were ferried to Tirunelveli though they have no proper credentials and loyalty to the party.Even if some of them are selected for the posts, how will they carry out organisational works in Madurai where they lack support from fellow party men asked a DMK leader. However, with the interview sessions in Tirunelveli for Madurai and Tuticorin districts,Stalin has drawn the curtains on the statewide talent spotting exercise to don youth wing posts. With these interviews,Stalin has completed the task of picking office-bearers for all the districts, except Vellore where he would conduct the sessions soon. The interview sessions have become a bone of contention between the siblings,as Alagiri who holds the post of south wing organising secretary insists that he should have a say in appointments in southern districts, while Stalin claims immunity for youth wing. However,Stalin supporters brushed aside the allegations by Alagiris men. They should understand a key factor behind these interviews it has been approved by Kalaignar. What is the point in opposing Stalin when he has the approval of Kalaignar asked a DMK leader from Stalin camp.

Supporters complained that Alagiri and Kanimozhi were not assigned venues to lead the protests. While Alagiri was in Madurai,Kanimozhi was in Chennai, but both chose not to participate in the Tuesday protests.Their loyalists claimed that the two leaders had been sidelined by the Stalin camp.Alagiris supporters said as south organising secretary, their leader was neither consulted about the DMKs executive committee meeting held in Chennai on December 13,when the statewide agitation was planned, nor about the protest schedules of various leaders across the state. As for Kanimozhi, she was not assigned a venue to address a protest meeting, said DMK sources.Former Union minister Dayanidhi Maran, actor Kushboo, party MLA J Anbazhagan and former state electricity minister Arcot N Veerasamy participated along with Karunanidhi in the Chennai protest. Karunanidhi alleged that the law and order situation in Tamil Nadu had worsened during the last one year. From May 2011,when the new government took over,928 murders and 768 thefts have taken place. There have been 476 cases of chain snatching as well, Karunanidhi alleged. The DMK chief claimed the prolonged hours of power outages ensured that streetlights did not work and criminals used the opportunity for carrying out their activities. The DMK chief also brought up the issue of defamation cases filed against opposition leaders by the state government and alleged that the ruling AIADMK was targeting his partymen. At Kancheepuram,Stalin said all sections of society, including farmers, labourers and students suffered due to the acute power crisis.Demanding a white paper on the power situation,Stalin said,The AIADMK government has assured that 1,000MW would be generated from municipal wastes in two years. But no action has been taken so far, Stalin alleged. He also urged party cadres to circulate pamphlets detailing the power problems. During its executive committee meeting, the DMK had accused the AIADMK government of showing utter disinterest in tackling the power problem in the state and decided to hold the peaceful statewide protest.Several thousand functionaries participated in the protest across the state.
