Sanjeev Sanyal: Foreign NGOs have no interest in the welfare of our country – Saurabh Sharma

Sanjeev Sanyal

Saurabh Sharma“If you look at the balance sheets of these NGOs, whether it’s Thomas Piketty, Oxfam, or any of the thousands of such NGOs, you’ll see where their money comes from. They are funded by organisations like the Ford Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, Gates Foundation, and Soros’ Open Society.” – Sanjeev Sanyal

Economist Sanjeev Sanyal, who has voiced his opposition to any kind of wealth or inheritance tax, recently hit out at Oxfam and economist Thomas Piketty for “exaggerating” the income inequality issue in India. Oxfam, Thomas Piketty, and some other global NGOs have been claiming higher income inequality in India and want a wealth tax on billionaires to tackle this issue.

Sanyal, however, believes that these global NGOs have different agendas and they want to bring down Indian billionaires and industrialists. “Many NGOs tend to exaggerate these issues. They have a different agenda. They want us to implement wealth tax, inheritance tax, and bring down our billionaires and industrialists,” he said in a podcast TRP.

The economist, a member in the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, said that this targeting of industrialists has been happening for some time. “When I was in school, we used to always hear about Tata and Birla. Today, the new names are Adani and Ambani,” he said, adding that India needs these industrialists because they are the ones who will invest.

“We need thousands and millions of jobs. It’s not going to be Piketty or Oxfam or other NGOs that will create these jobs. Only the industrialists will do that. So, targeting these industrialists is wrong.”

Sanyal blasted these NGOs, saying they praise American billionaires but go after Indian billionaires. All these big NGOs, he said, take funds from people like George Soros and Bill Gates. “If you look at the balance sheets of these NGOs, whether it’s Thomas Piketty, Oxfam, or any of the thousands of such NGOs, you’ll see where their money comes from. They are funded by organisations like the Ford FoundationRockefeller FoundationGates Foundation, and Soros’ Open Society.”

“Who are these people? Bill Gates, Soros, Ford, Rockefeller—they are all American billionaires. So, these entities that preach to us are funded by American billionaires. In their own countries, they praise these billionaires. These organisations are completely funded by American billionaires,” the economist and historian said.

Oxfam, which tracks poverty, claims that the top 10 per cent of the Indian population holds 77 per cent of the total national wealth. As per its report available on its ite, 73 per cent of the wealth generated in 2017 went to the richest 1 per cent, while 67 crore Indians who comprise the poorest half of the population saw only a 1 per cent increase in their wealth.

Oxfam report also pointed out that there were 119 billionaires in India and their number had increased from only 9 in 2000 to 101 in 2017. “Between 2018 and 2022, India is estimated to produce 70 new millionaires every day.”

Sanyal said India’s population is about 16 or 17 per cent of the world, so it should aim to have 16 or 17 per cent of the world’s billionaires as Indians. He, however, said that the government should also support the poor. “I have always advocated for this. But this doesn’t mean we should suppress our innovators and investors who will invest in large projects.”

The economist said that foreigners want India to keep its startups under control because it benefits them. “Remember, these foreign NGOs have no interest in the welfare of our country. They just want to keep us under control. If they hate billionaires so much, why do they take money from Soros, Ford, etc.?” he asked.

“Check their balance sheets. All these organizations take money from white billionaires. What problem do they have with Indian billionaires? We need our billionaires. At the same time, we need to support the poor. I have no doubt about this. I have always listed what needs to be done, but implementing inheritance tax and wealth tax is not the solution.”

Sanyal said that during Indira Gandhi’s time, these taxes were imposed and they didn’t yield any benefits. “Most wealthy people either put their money in a trust or take it abroad. These taxes only affect the middle class. The rich either move their money abroad or put it in trusts, making these taxes ineffective.”

In March this year, a paper on India’s income inequality, co-authored by French economist Thomas Piketty, claimed that India’s top 1 per cent income share was among the very highest in the world, higher than even South Africa, Brazil, and US. According to the paper, India was now more unequal than what it was under the British Raj.

The paper suggested that besides serving as a tool to fight inequality, a “super tax” of 2 per cent on the net wealth of the 167 wealthiest families in 2022-23 would yield 0.5 per cent of national income in revenues and create valuable fiscal space to facilitate such investments.

In the run-up to general elections, Sam Pitroda, chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress, pitched for the inheritance tax to bring down inequality. While the Congress distanced from his remarks, former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi’s comments that the grand old party, if elected to power, would conduct a financial survey spooked the people.

Even then, Sanyal had objected to wealth tax, saying this was a tool used by the rich (who have perfected tax protection) to keep out middle-class aspirants who may climb in through multigenerational wealth accumulation. – Business Today, 18 July 2024

Foreign-funded NGOs and the nexus of anti-Modi forces – Sudesh Verma

Anti-Amnesty International protest in New Delhi.

Sudesh VermaMore than 20,000 NGOs have been deregistered, including Amnesty and Greenpeace, for refusing to meet FCRA compliance as per the law of the land. – Sudesh Verma

We have seen how the Congress and the Left have been manipulating the system for their own aspiration—one to facilitate corruption and the other to establish ideological hegemony. I have also tried to explain how the two have joined hands due to the fear of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and what would happen if he got a third term.

The biggest support to the Congress ecosystem has come from the NGOs that have been at the receiving end because of the Modi government’s efforts to ensure transparency and accountability of these organisations. More than 20,000 NGOs have been deregistered, including Amnesty and Greenpeace, for refusing to meet compliance as per the law of the land.

Even if we conclude that one NGO would employ at least five persons, this would create a formidable force if these NGOs are funded by foreign donors who want to manipulate the Indian system for their own benefit. At a time when India is being lauded for its robust democratic institution and the rule of law, many countries are increasingly realising that it is much safer to do business in India and run their operations from here than the uncertain future in China or other countries that thrive on the dictatorship of various kinds based on ideology or military strength.

Vested interests will try to show India as a land of conflict and they will use all assets including gullible politicians, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and media to show India in a bad light. No less than the then prime minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, who had criticised foreign-backed NGOs for “stalling the use of genetic engineering in agriculture and leading protests against the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu”.

India faced a similar situation in 2020-21 when farmers started agitating against the three farm laws without showing any keenness to discuss the merits or otherwise of the issue. The government showed maturity and withdrew the legislation in the interest of national security and national integration, but it is still inexplicable to understand why environmentalist Greta Thunberg and pop singer Rihanna tweeted support in favour of farmers’ agitation. They acted as paid assassins and became a part of the toolkit in the hands of anti-India groups. Prime Minister Modi rightly said that there was an international conspiracy to defame India.

These NGOs theoretically serve the important function of taking the government’s policies to the last person and giving feedback to make the system more transparent. At times they act as advocacy groups for the poor and the downtrodden to bring the government to account. But there are many vested interests that work under the guise of these NGOs and encourage subversive activities to jeopardise India’s sovereignty.

All these NGOs funded by foreign donors are governed by the FCRA (Foreign Contribution Regulation Act). Since this involves foreign exchange, a meticulous record needs to be kept to keep track of whether the money is clean and coming from known sources or through the Hawala route or funded by questionable organisations. Also, a record needs to be maintained of the purpose of the money so that a track can be maintained whether expenditure was incurred as per the mandate of the donor.

Foreign funding is subjected to revelation about the source of funding and the way the expenses are made. This is to ensure that the funds are not misused. Many NGOs acting as umbrella NGOs would patronise smaller NGOs through liberal funding and get them to come on the streets when the time comes to oppose certain interests and push forward their own interest. This had become the standard practice by most of these NGOs. Many times, gullible people who come on the streets are not even aware of what they are protesting for.

The new FCRA Act that came into effect on September 29, 2020, debars a person of the following category from accepting foreign funding: election candidates, editor or publisher of a newspaper, judges, government servants, members of any legislature and political parties and public servants. Another provision of the new Act forbids the recipient of foreign funds to transfer it to another entity. Another provision of the Act has brought administrative expense from 50 per cent to 20 per cent. And an FCRA account can be opened only with the SBI. These provisions of the new Act have tried to make the NGO regime under the FCRA more transparent and accountable.

These NGOs fund foreign trips of leading intellectuals (mostly Leftists) to create an ecosystem. Some of the prominent voices against the Modi government heard on television debates or read in the columns of various newspapers are of those who were regular beneficiaries of the largesse of these NGOs. Let us not forget that these NGOs had enlisted the support of Indian parliamentarians to write to Barack Obama not to give visa to Modi. 65 parliamentarians had written a letter to Obama in 2012 asking him to continue the policy of no visa to Modi. These NGOs have been actively involved in painting Modi in a bad light.

The direct attack on a generation of black money was the decision to close more than four lakh companies that were being used as shell companies and were being operated to generate cash. More than three lakh directors have been disqualified from being directors again for their failure to maintain compliance and involvement in various other activities.

All those people who have suffered due to this cannot believe that the country is on the path of course correction where honest taxpayers would be rewarded and those who try to subvert the system would be punished. They are influential people and most of them form a part of the elite. Modi has disturbed their equilibrium with the system. – News18, 29 April 2024

Seeing through the shadowy world of NGOs – Prabhu Chawla

Nirmala Sitharaman, Narendra Modi, Amit Shah.

Prabhu Chawla is the editorial director of The New Indian ExpressTaming of NGOs is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mission to neutralise all institutions which his party believes undermines the cultural, social, religious and unique identity of India. – Prabhu Chawla

The conscience industry is one of the pillars of India’s crumbling Left liberal edifice. There is nothing like a good cry to get the tears and dollars flowing for poverty propagandists. The elite NGOs who haunted the corridors of power—wooing munificent ministers and beneficial babus with the best vol-au-vent and five-star grub for unsuspecting Whites with deep pockets and a cultural guilt about being rich while Acche Din is on the agenda—are quivering under their muslin dohars in Lutyens’ Delhi mansions after the Modi government emptied their wallets and froze their bank accounts.

The neo Right-wingers call them Nasty Greedy Operators (NGOs) who claim to promote the mirage of championing a clean environment, demolishing both economic and gender inequalities, empowering marginalised masses and converting the sick into healthy go-getters. However, close scrutiny and audit done by various agencies in India and overseas reveal that most heavy-hitter NGOs are a cabal of malicious mercenaries who collect moolah to sustain their luxe lifestyles, while the legerdemain of hypocrisy launders their generous reputation.

Last week, the Union home ministry cancelled the Foreign Contribution Registration Act (FCRA) licences of five NGOs: CNI Synodical Board of Social Services, Voluntary Health Association of India, Indo-Global Social Service Society, Church’s Auxiliary for Social Action, and Evangelical Fellowship of India. The charges were indulging in religious conversion and misuse of foreign funds. A couple of them had been raided by agencies last year and their accounts were audited. They have been getting big money from the US, Germany, Sweden and other European countries, foundations and trusts with controversial pasts.

The latest round of suspension and taming of NGOs is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mission to neutralise all institutions which his party believes undermines the cultural, social, religious and unique identity of India. Purging the NGOs of all illiberal elements and choking their financial pipeline is an unwritten part of BJP’s manifesto. The revocation of Article 370, construction of Ram Mandir and Uniform Civil Code have been its primary missions, as well as demolishing hostile and phoney civil society groups. It is not a coincidence that in 2023 alone, over 100 (in)famous think tanks and NGOs were banned from raising foreign funds.

The home ministry has identified more than 1,000 poverty pundits who would perhaps have easy access to a combined corpus of over Rs 25,000 crore in CSR funds. A-lister think tanks like the Centre for Policy Research, a habitual habitat of retired senior bureaucrats and defence officers, and the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation have been denied permission to canvas for foreign donations because the government thinks they use money and mind power to undermine the legitimate authority of the state and its institutions by influencing policy.

These deluxe charity collaborators and cultural criminals parade with glamorous titles for their charity-for-self initiatives and call themselves “problem solvers”, “innovators” and “creators of pipelines of social leaders”. Most of the ex-bureaucrats were associated with the UPA regime; they designed the narrative against the Modi government. The troika comprising the PM, Amit Shah and Nirmala Sitharaman are constantly monitoring their activities and connection with ideologically opposed sections in business, Bollywood and civil society.

The FCRA registration of over 7,000 NGOs have either been withdrawn or allowed to lapse in the past five years after close financial scrutiny by agencies. Modi’s visible hatred of NGOs stems from their vicious shellacking when he was Gujarat CM during 2002-2014. All the high-profile NGOs promoted by celebs in the media, Bollywood and civil society targeted the state as the hellish haven of Modi, a merciless monster. They filed cases against him, pressured foreign governments to deny him visas for official visits, and even tried to get him arrested. Later investigations uncovered their dastardly designs of using dollars and euros to promote their political agenda, which was to serve disempowered children and women.

Various Sangh Parivar affiliates have been complaining about objectionable anti-Hindu and anti-India NGOs operating in parts of India. The Sangh Parivar was also peeved over the massive infiltration of NGO-sponsored Leftist intellectuals in the establishment pushing an ‘anti-Hindu’ agenda. While the BJP’s detractors have charged the central government of indulging in vindictive actions and injecting a divisive virus in the system, the saffron group claim that foreign-funded NGOs have to be hunted out to extract Bharat from the Westernised slave mindset.

Modi, soon after becoming PM, trained his merciless lens on their workings. He was shocked to learn that India has the maximum number of NGOs: three million, which means every third NGO is run by an Indian. Delhi alone houses over 75,000. Modi was dismayed to discover that less than 10 percent of them submit their annual reports or balance sheets to the government. Their collective treasure chest comprising foreign largesse holds over Rs 12,000 crore annually. According to information given to parliament, “during 2019-20, 2020-21, and 2021-22, a total of Rs 55,645.08 crore was received by Indian NGOs as foreign contributions”.

Modi swung into action, using the restructured Niti Aayog to introduce the NGO-Darpan platform as an interface between the sarkar and civil society. Over 1.8 lakh NGOs are registered on the platform. The PM’s idea was to monitor their activities and realign them with his agenda and mission. Previously, NGOs were subverting Indian culture and Modi’s dream of Bharat as the Vishwaguru. An unwritten global code of conduct mandated for all NGOs is that they must pass the triple test of transparency, impact and accountability. All genuine NGOs worldwide strictly stick to their code. Nearly all Indian charity charlatans floated by corporate giants or fraudulent altruists ignore these rules. When exposed, they simply float another NGO under a different name.

Indian NGOs are organisationally and financially opaque. Many of them use multi-layer financial channels to hide their real money messiah. They rarely disclose the full details of donors and the terms and conditions on which funds are received. Since these exclusive poverty industry projects are floated and run by well-connected chatterati and glitterati, all accountability is ignored. They hire ideologically compatible employees or individuals nominated by their funders. Most NGOs have been spending more on administration, foreign jaunts, travel and other expensive projects while paying lip service to the causes they officially espouse. Protected by the shroud of secrecy, their impact report isn’t made public; only purple prose papers are issued to pacify their Indian and videshi patrons.

Charity begins at home. Modi is ensuring it ends at home too, by incapacitating anti-national kahunas from crippling BJP’s brand of nationalist ideology. – The New Indian Express, 7 April 2024
