History edit edit wikitesto ]

Basilica before 1943

The Basilica Cathedral dedicated to St. Thomas the Apostle was built on the site of an ancient Roman temple. Destroyed by the Normans in 1060, it was rebuilt.

After an earthquake had caused its destruction, which in that period had affected the southern regions of the Italian peninsula, it was rebuilt and reopened to the public on 10 November 1127 and dedicated to Santa Maria degli Angeli, as shown by the epigraph preserved in the attached diocesan museum.

From 6 September 1258 it houses the Bones of St. Thomas the Apostle. The Ortona navarca, the pious Leone, together with his fellow soldiers, reported the body of the Apostle and the tombstone on the galley, from the Greek island of Chios. Chios represented a space of the second front of war, where the Ortone fleet composed of three galleys, had gone to fight, following the admiral of Manfredi, Filippo Chinardo. From that date the basilica became a center of prayer, a call of pilgrims, but also the object of various destructions.

On 17 February 1427 peace was proclaimed in this church between the cities of Lanciano and Ortona sponsored by San Giovanni da Capestrano .

In 1566 it suffered the assault of the Turks by Piyale Pascià and a fire, which fortunately did not irremediably attack the body of the Apostle. In 1570, with the establishment of the diocese, the temple was renewed and considerably improved and the Orthonese could acclaim their pastor in the person of Giandomenico Rebiba , related to Cardinal Scipione Rebiba.

Unfortunately in 1799 the cathedral again suffered another aggression from the French. It was still restored.

Reliquary bust of St. Thomas the Apostle

On 5 November 1943, the vicar of the diocese, Msgr. Luigi Carbone, the parish priest of St. Thomas Don Pietro Di Fulvio and Don Tommaso Sanvitale met together for an important decision: where and how to save the silver bust of St. Thomas. The Germans, in fact, had sent mixed signals. They were informed of the weight and the market value of the bust. A Catholic commander had pledged to save the cathedral and the traffic light tower . The three priests, not knowing to whom to believe, after a thoughtful reflection, decided to "wall up" the bust of the Apostle on the second floor of the bell tower, in a dark corner, covered with abandoned wet timber. They proceeded in absolute secrecy on the same day at 2 pm, helped by two masons: Nicola Di Fulvio, brother of the parish priest, and Peppino Valentinetti.

Then came the devastating fury of the war, which caused the city of Ortona more than 1300 civilian victims and the loss of all the building heritage. The cathedral was literally gutted, the sacristy was barely standing, albeit with the floor covered with rubble. On 11 January 1944, when the front line was moving away, Msgr. Tesauri, archbishop of Lanciano and bishop of Ortona, had the altar built on the tomb of St. Thomas demolished. He extracted the urn that he saw again after 150 years. In the procession the Bones of the Apostle were transferred to the Castello district, to the parish priest's house. The notary drew up the relative minutes. Meanwhile, the rubble was being removed from the sacristy of the cathedral. The lawyer Tommaso Grilli took care of the recovery of the artistic pieces shattered with the war,

On 16 July 1945, on a stage set up in the cathedral square, between the commotion of the Ortona people who had returned from displacement, Msgr. Tesauri late celebrated the Feast of Forgiveness, which occurs the first Sunday in May. The sacred bust, extracted from the wall where it remained hidden, was again exposed to the veneration of the faithful.

The rebuilt cathedral was reopened for worship and rededicated on 5 September 1949, with a solemn ceremony celebrated by Msgr. Gioacchino Di Leo, bishop of Ortona and by Cardinal Federico Tedeschini. [2]

 Architecture edit edit wikitesto ]

Central nave of the basilica

The original structure is testified by eighteenth-century paintings and early twentieth-century photos. The structure was in the shape of a baroque Latin cross . The façade was surmounted by two buttresses in the shape of classical ribs that ended at the top like a hook. The façade was also decorated with a rectangular central window and a medieval portal (now preserved) with Baroque enrichments. In front of it stood a portico with large arches.

On the left there was a tower of the medieval church that was reused as a clock tower with two bells for hours. To the right of the façade there was the real bell tower, smaller than the tower, with three arches on the master side (it had a rectangular plan) and two larger ones on the left.

The dome was different from the current one because it was lower and wider. Today's dome has a more narrow and high aspect.

Inside there were the frescoes that today we see reconstructed in detail. The chapel with the crypt of St. Thomas was in the exact place of the current reconstruction, except that the niche was frescoed. Fortunately the golden coffin with relics remained the same.

In the general lines, the building has a longitudinal scheme that seems to follow the model of the great Apulian basilicas long established already in the first decades of the thirteenth century.

The façade was rebuilt in 1947 after the destruction by the Germans of the eighteenth-century façade with half dome and the nine-column portico of three hundred. Only the secondary portal of the Swabian era remained intact.

On the square there is the main portal rebuilt after the war by finds recovered from the rubble: it is the work of Nicola Mancini (1311). In the lunette we find Mary with the Child, St. John the Baptist and St. John the EvangelistIt was built on the longitudinal axis with expertly worked stones. The use of particular qualities of limestone from ancient coastal quarries is witnessed since the XIII century; their use in Swabian architecture is determined by the fact that this material is particularly resistant to the action of marine aerosol degradation. The workability of the stone was another requirement for use, even for extremely refined decorative purposes, in particular for its aptitude to accommodate complex plastic motifs taken from the plant world and from the rich geometrical repertoire typical of the Norman-Swabian period.

In the façade there are ogival arches, Swabian capitals, and windows with a Gothic layout. The new bell tower preserves the large "bell" of 1605 . The apse dates back to the fourteenth century .

There are finds from the 13th century. The vault of the central nave was built in the eighteenth century, while that of the apse is from the fourteenth century. In the ancient sacristy to the left of the high altar, interesting head-brackets that support the ribs of the ribbed vault. In the crypt below the presbytery , the gilded copper urn and the tombstone of the apostle with Greek writing. The frescoes in the dome are by the painter Luciano Bartoli; the figure of San Matteo Evangelista is the only one left after the destruction of the basilica by the Germans, which was carried out by painter Antonio Piermatteo. The images of the Via Crucis are by the artist Stefano Durante from Ortona. In the crypt the pendant crucifix was executed by the sculptor Aldo D'Adamo

Inside it preserves the stucco bas-reliefs of the first half of the nineteenth century by Vincenzo Perez . On its sides you can see the two ceramics "Gli ortonesi in Scio" and "The arrival in Ortona of the relics of San Tommaso" executed by Tommaso Cascella . Also in this chapel is kept the silver reliquary bust of St. Thomas the Apostle (contains some fragments of the bones of the skull): it is the third in order of time, merged by the Pani foundry of Naples in April of the nineteenth century. The first was stolen in 1528 by mercenary militias, the second was stolen by the French in 1799 and then merged.

The first nucleus of the museum collection was collected in the second post-war period in order to preserve and protect the numerous and valuable works of art ranging from the 12th to the 19th century, coming from the Duomo and other religious buildings of the territory, which escaped the destruction of the bombings suffered by the city of Ortona during the Second World War.

On the occasion of the solemn celebrations for the feast of the Pardon of St. Thomas the Apostle, on May 3, 1980, the structure was opened to the public as the Cathedral Museum and only after further restoration and reorganization works, in 2003, was recognized as an articulation of the Diocesan Museum of Lanciano-Ortona.

The works preserved in it, exhibited in three vast rooms, occupied in the past by as many chapels connected to the main church, paradigmatically represent the artistic and cultural level reached by Ortona during its history but above all they are a concrete testimony of the will to safeguard its cultural heritage for the benefit of future generations, even in the most devastating disasters, as was certainly the destruction to which the City was subjected in December 1943. [4]

Translation: the relics of St. Thomas [5] [ edit edit wikitesto ]

The island of Chios ( Chio ), included in the Sporades archipelago and very close to the Turkish coast, in ancient times was a flourishing city of the Ionia of Asia and boasts of having given birth to illustrious men, such as the poets Homer and Ion, the historian Teopompo and the philosopher Metrodoro. Conquered by the Romans in 70 BC C. subsequently became part of the Byzantine Empire. It was sacked by the Arabs in the 8th century and by the Turks in 1089. From 1204, inserted in the Latin Empire of the East, shortly afterwards it became the object of contention between Venice and Genoa, which began its exploitation in 1261. The Turks conquered it in 1566 .

Three Orthodox galleys reached the island of Chios in 1258. The Byzantine Empire was in crisis, the Greek-supported kingdom of Nicaea attempted to seize its supremacy. Manfredi, prince of Taranto and future king of Puglia and Sicily, bound by agreement to the despot of Epirus, and to the king of Jerusalem his nephew, had favored agreements, with documentation reached up to us, not only with all the port cities of the Ortona Adriatic including, but also with Genoa itself, declared enemy of Venice. Manfredi aspired not only to conquer northern Italy, as he partly did, but also to become emperor of the East. To this end he prepared a fleet of hundred military galleys and entrusted the command to his great admiral Filippo Chinardo. The fleet reached Nafplion of Romania and then split. One side fought around the Peloponnese and the Aegean islands, the other in the sea that lapped the Syrian coast of that time. The three Ortona galleys moved to the second war front and reached the island of Chios. The following story is provided by Giambattista De Lectis, a doctor and writer from Ortona of the year one thousand five hundred. After the sacking, the Ortonese navarcaLionhe went to pray in the main church of the island of Chios and was attracted by an oratory adorned and resplendent with lights. An elderly priest, through an interpreter, informed him that the Body of St. Thomas the Apostle was venerated in that oratory. Leone, pervaded by an unusual sweetness, gathered in deep prayer. At that moment a luminous hand twice invited him to come closer. The navar Leone extended his hand and extracted a bone from the largest hole in the tombstone, on which Greek letters were engraved and a bishop half-lengthed was depicted. He confirmed what the old priest had told him and that he was actually in the presence of the body of the Apostle. He returned to the galley and planned the theft for the next night, together with his companion Ruggiero di Grogno. The two did so. They lifted the heavy tombstone and observed the relics below. They wrapped them in white cloths, put them in a wooden box (preserved in Ortona until the sacking of 1566) and brought them to the galley. Leone then, together with other companions, returned to the church, took the tombstone and took it away. As soon as Admiral Chinardo learned of the precious cargo, he transferred all the sailors of Muslim faith to other ships and ordered them to head for Ortona.

The galley carrying the Apostle's Bones sailed more safely and quickly than the others and landed at the port of Ortona on 6 September 1258 . According to the story of De Lectis, the abbot Iacopo, responsible for the Church of Ortona, was informed, who prepared all the precautions for a warm and shared welcome from all the people. Since then the apostle's body and tombstone have been kept in the crypt of the Basilica. In 1259 a parchment written in Bari by the judge to the contracts Giovanni Pavone, in the presence of five witnesses, preserved in Ortona at the Diocesan Library, confirms the veracity of that event, reported, as mentioned, also by Giambattista De Lectis, doctor and writer 16th century from Ortona.

In 1475, some of the Ortona gentlemen, hoping to get rich, agreed to remove the bones of St. Thomas to offer them to the Lord of Venice. The only key, which opened the lock of the box containing the mortal remains of the Apostle, was kept by Don Mascio, who became their accomplice. The attempt, perpetrated at night, failed because the offenders had the impression of hearing the admonishing voice of the Apostle: lax to stay. Scared they fled, but the news spread quickly in the city. Inquiries and arrests followed. At the same time the bars were built with chains and the keys increased to five. After that sad episode, the City Council was made responsible. In fact, from that moment on, the custody of the sacred Bones became a prestigious and highly responsible task.

Today the relics are placed under the altar of the crypt in a gilded copper urn with an effigy made in 1612 by the Ortona painter Tommaso Alessandrini .

Scientific recognition [6] [ edit edit wikitesto ]

The Crypt

Tombstone of the Saint removed from Chios, together with the Relics

The scientific recognition of the bones of St. Thomas, with all the prescribed operations, lasted from 12 September 1983 to 25 April 1986. On the evening of 21 December 1983, on the fortieth anniversary of the destruction of the Cathedral, his Excellency Msgr. Enzio d'Antonio called a popular assembly in the cathedral for the celebration of the Eucharist and to present a project for the protection and conservation of the relics of St. Thomas the Apostle.

The survey began with the extraction of the Apostle's skull from the silver bust kept in the urn placed in the center of the altar of the chapel dedicated to St. Thomas. He continued with the opening of the sarcophagus and the box containing the relics, and subsequently with the macroscopic examination of the skull and of the finds contained in the metal urn. The commission consisted of Arnaldo Capelli, dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Chieti, Sergio Sensi, director of the Institute of Medical Clinic of the University of Chieti, Luigi Capasso, professor of paleopathology at the University of Chieti, Fulvio Della Loggia , medical clinic help University of Chieti.

The anthropological expertise on the remains of the skeleton was to establish:

  • the skeletal segments certainly referable to the skull of St. Thomas
  • attribution of sex, age at death and relative age
  • detect any pathological conditions
  • rearrange the skeletal material for better preservation

Histological and histochemical investigations were also carried out as a further study. The recomposed relics were exposed to public veneration and then proceeded to operations for conservative intervention. The works ended with the arrangement of the relics, the closing of the cylinder and its arrangement, after highly specialized technical interventions under the altar of the crypt, where the body of the Apostle is still preserved.

In the summary propositions we read: " (...) the skeletal remains are those of a longitype with a generally graceful bone structure, of stature 160 + - 10 cm, of skeletal age between 50 and 70 years, with male secondary skeletal sexual characteristics , affected inter alia by a rheumatic disease that is most likely to be classed as spondylar-ankylosing arthritis of Strumpell-Marie " . Moreover in the scientific report it emerges that the examined individual “shows traces of a fracture of the zygomatic bone marginal to the cut shows that it did not have to be a heavy slash, but above all of a well sharp cutting edge, whose action was limited to the cut , rather than mechanical splitting ”.

In the Acts of Thomas, the martyrdom of the Apostle is narrated in these terms: " [...] When the aforementioned prayer was finished, he said to the soldiers: Come, follow the orders of the one who sent you. Those came and pierced it all together with the spears. He fell and died ".

Also in the past many scientific surveys were made, due to the repeated destruction of the city and the cathedral. The first reconnaissance was made after the Turks attacked Ortona in 1566. The relative document, written by the notary Giuseppe Massari di Ortona, in the presence of numerous authorities and witnesses, of the bishop mons. Rebiba, of the canons, of the mayor, of the physicist and doctor Giovan Battista De Lectis and of many others, bears the date of 16 November 1575. The second reconnaissance is dated 26 April 1800, after the aggression made by the French to the city of Ortona in the 1799. The Bones of the Apostle were secured in a box, closed with a key and two padlocks. The new silver bust was inaugurated, since the previous one had been melted by the French. The third check is on January 20, 1944, after the liberation of Ortona from the Germans, who in any case had not caused any damage, neither to the Bones kept in a sarcophagus under the altar, nor to the "walled" Bust in a secret place of the bell tower. The notarial deed is signed by the notary Tommaso Pettinelli. The reconnaissance of 1952 and 1958 aimed at a rigorous list and a technical denomination of all the Bones of the Apostle.

Report on the observation of a bone relic attributed to St. Thomas kept in the Basilica of San Nicola di Bari change edit wikitesto ]

Many reliquaries are kept in the Treasury of the Basilica of San Nicola di Bari. Among them is the one containing a bony relic attributed to the Apostle Thomas. The reliquary dates back to 1602-1618 and has the shape of a right arm holding a spear, in the ancient iconography symbol of the martyrdom suffered by the Apostle, and rests on a base containing a relic of the Magdalene.

"It is a long bone (length prevailing on the other diameters), preserved in Bari from 1102, which has the upper extremity, or proximal epiphysis, in the shape of a round disk, hollowed out at the free face. [...] From the following conclusions can be drawn:

1) The value of the height of the subject reconstructed with the radio bone kept in the Basilica of St. Nicholas of Bari (163.40 cm. + 2.006) did not reveal a statistically significant diversity (p> 0.05) with the value of the height reconstructed with the femurs of the relics preserved in the Basilica of San Tommaso Apostolo in Ortona (160 cm. + 10). It is therefore possible that the Bari radio bone and the Ortona relics belonged to the same subject in life.
2) The lack of the left radio bone in the Relics preserved in Ortona makes the Relic brought to Bari in 1102 compatible and complementary with those brought to Ortona by Chios in 1258.
 "

Gondophares I originally seems to have been a ruler of Seistan in what is today eastern Iran, probably a vassal or relative of the Apracarajas. Around 20–10 BC

As Senior points out,[8] this Gudnaphar has usually been identified with the first Gondophares, who has thus been dated after the advent of Christianity, but there is no evidence for this assumption, and Senior's research shows that Gondophares I could be dated even before 1 AD. Acts of the Holy Apostle Thomas

170 Now it came to pass after a long time that one of the children of Misdaeus the king was smitten by a devil, and no man could cure him, for the devil was exceeding fierce. And Misdaeus the king took thought and sad: I will go and open the sepulchre, and take a bone of the apostle of God and hang it upon my son and he shall be healed. But while Misdaeus thought upon this, the apostle Thomas appeared to him and said unto him: Thou believedst not on a living man, and wilt thou believe on the dead? yet fear not, for my Lord Jesus Christ hath compassion on thee and pitieth thee of his goodness.

And he went and opened the sepulchre, but found not the apostle there, for one of the brethren had stolen him away and taken him unto Mesopotamia; but from that place where the bones of the apostle had lain Misdaeus took dust and put it about his son's neck, saying: I believe on thee, Jesu Christ, now that he hath left me which troubleth men and opposeth them lest they should see thee. And when he had hung it upon his son, the lad became whole.

The bones of Saint Thomas

ortona-thomas-skeleton.jpgI was curious if there were some relics of our guild patron saint Thomas spread over Europe (or India). The answer is yes - and, surprisingly, there is an almost complete skeleton of him! The story is that after Saint Thomas was slain, he was initially buried in India. In the 3rd century, however, his bones were transported to Edessa in Mesopotamia (the place from the feast with the hand of the cupbearer) by the Indian King Mazdai (Misdeus), where a tomb was build for him. In 13th century the bones were 'rescued' together with the tombstone to Italy, as the shrine with the bones was threatened by the Turks. The relics made an intermediate stop at the island of Chios in the Aegean. From there they were stolen by Leone Acciaiuoli, captain of a ship from the fleet of Manfred, prince of Taranto, and taken to Ortona in Italy were they arrived on 6 September 1258. In Ortona, the relics were kept in the basilica San Thomasso Apostolo, which was desecrated by the Turks in 1566. After this event the remains were kept in an gild copper urn that was made in 1612 by Tommaso Alessandrini from Ortona.

From the 17th century to today, the shrine has been opened several times to do some surveys (which bones are there) and even some research. Between 1983-1986, the shrine was opened for a protection and preservation project. The opportunity was also taken to do some scientific research on the bones of the apostle. This was done under supervision of prof. dr. Arnaldo Capelli, prof. dr. Sergio Sensi, prof. dr. Luigi Capasso (paleopathology) and prof. dr. Fulvio Della Loggia, all from the Faculty of medicine from the University of Chieti. The anthropological examination on the remains of the skeleton established that the bones belonged to a relatively long male individual with delicate bone structure, with a height of 1 metre 60 cm plus/minus 10 cm. At the age of death the individual was between 50 and 70 years old, with a fracture of the right cheekbone caused by a sharp blow shortly before or after death. The person did also suffer from rheumatism or artritis, which could be seen at the small joints of the hands. Furthermore, a small osteoma (bone tumour) was found in the frontal region of the skull.

 IMG_7863.jpg
The gild copper urn holding the most of the remains of Apostle Thomas.

As can be seen from the photo of the skeleton, several bones are missing, especially the bones of the arm. In 1953, a wrist bone of the right arm was extracted from the Ortona skeleton and given to the Indian church. It now resides at the Marthoma Pontifical Shrine in Koddungalloor in Kerala, India, one of the places where Thomas supposedly has built a church.

la_3.jpg

Another bone from the arm of Thomas is found in a relic in the church of Saint Nicholas in Bari, Italy. The Cronicon Bari mentions that a French bishop, cousin of Baldwin of Le Bourg, Lord of Edessa, returning in 1102 from the Holy Land and from Edessa, left the relic of St. Thomas the Apostle in the Basilica in Bari, The reliquary itself is dated to 1602-1618 and has the form of a right arm holding a spear in the iconography of the martyrdom suffered by the Apostle, and rests on a base containing a relic of the Magdalene. The bone of Thomas can be seen through a window of the reliquary. In 2009, the bone was measured and compared to the bones in Ortona. The upper arm bone has a length of 23 cm; this can be used to calculate the full body length, resulting in a length of 163.4 cm plus/minus 2 cm, more or less the same as the skeleton in Ortona. The left upper arm of Bari is missing in Ortona, so this bone could be from the same person.

Imm2
On the long sides that surround the window, some words are carved: on the left side from bottom to top "Brachii SANCTI THOMAE Apostles" and on the right side in descending order "ECCLESIAE SANCTI NICOLAI BARENSIS".

Surprisingly, another arm bone of Thomas is found in Maastricht, the Netherlands, in the treasury of the Basilica of  St. Servaes. Curiously, the treasury text mentions this as the right arm bone of St. Catherine, but the text that can be seen through the window of the reliquary clearly state: St. Thomas Apollona (Apostle). Perhaps this is the missing right upper arm bone from the Ortona skeleton.

Also some finger bones are lacking in Ortona. The bone from the index finger of 'doubting' Saint Thomas, which touched the wound of Christ, can be found in the Basilica Santa Croce in Gerusalemme in Rome Italy. Some say that this relic has been in Santa Croce from the time of St. Helen (third century, i.e. the time that the body was moved to Edessa). In the centre of the reliquary, remade after the French revolution,  is an oval case with both sides of crystal in which a holder in the shape of a finger with two openings in the side is placed. Through the openings the finger bone can be clearly seen. Some other finger pieces of Thomas did return from Edessa to India (instead of to Europe). A reliquary with some hand bones is preserved in the St. Thomas Museum in Milapore.

Finally, a second skull of Saint Thomas exists (really a miracle!) in the Greek orthodox monastery of Saint John the Theologian on the island on Padmos, Greece. It is kept in a large embossed silver goblet with a lid of silver with a very rich Venetian rug. Byzantine Emperor Alexios Kommenos (11th century) had the relic bound with silver strips, both lengthwise and over the top. Where the silver strips crossed, they were adorned with precious stones. After it was completed, it was presented to St. Christodoulos, the founder of the monastery.

Other Thomas artefacts

IMG_7865.jpgSome other artefacts related to St. Thomas are his tombstone, which made the same trip from Edessa to Ortona as the skeleton, and also resides in the Basilica San Thomasso Apostolo. The tombstone measures 137 by 48 cm and has a thickness of 48 cm and is made of chalcedone. This tombstone is actually a plaque used to cover a tomb made of lower quality material, a practise used in early Christian times. The plaque has an inscription and a bas-relief that similar to those in the Syrian Mesopotamian area (i.e. where Edessa is situated). The inscriptions are in Greek unicals and are dated from the 3rd to 5th century and mention 'thomas osios' (holy Thomas or Saint Thomas). More careful study of the inscription found some traced signs over the words, which would change the meaning slightly to that of 'the real Thomas'. The bas-relief depicts a religious figure with a halo in the act of imparting, with the right hand, the blessing (according to the rites of the Eastern Church and indicating the first two letters, in Greek, of the word Christ).  In the left hand he holds an object that could be a sword, which is a clear reference to the martyrdom of Saint Thomas. The lower part of the stone has two holes of different sizes, such as those found in various tombs of the early centuries of Christianity,  in order to introduce balms or make libations on the grave of the deceased. When it came to the tomb of a martyr, the broader was also used to provide relics from contact.

The following relic of Saint Thomas is a bit strange; it is said to be the tip of the lance that took the life of the saint. It was recovered from the (original Indian) grave during a Portuguese excavation in the 16th century and is now preserved in the Milapore St. Thomas Museum in India. However, it is also said (see above) that Saint Thomas was slain by a sword, which would mean this reliquary is a hoax. Death by the sword is also depicted on the Thomas Teppich in Wienhausen, Germany and in the windows of Chartres Cathedral in France.

Modern science

Now imagine what you can do with all these bones using modern 21st century research techniques (not those employed 1983): check his exact age using C14 radiocarbon dating; extract some DNA from the bones or teeth and you would have the complete genome of the doubting Apostle himself. Having the genome, the geographic origin of the skeleton can be deduced (does he come from the Galilee region). As Thomas is sometimes called Dydimus ('the twin' - in fact the name Thomas means twin in Aramese), he is therefore by some thought to be the brother of Jesus (for instance in the Book of Thomas the Contender, one of the New Testament apocrypha represented in the Nag Hammadi library, a cache of Gnostic gospels secreted in the Egyptian desert). If one takes this to be true, then you would have the genetic material of Maria and Joseph as well (actually the brother idea might not be that strange: Joseph was a carpenter and likely would pass his knowledge to his siblings. If Thomas was given the woodworking knowledge by Joseph, his voyage to India to build a palace is less far-fetched as it seems). More down-to-earth, simple DNA fingerprinting (a now common forensic technique), would also allow to compare all the scattered arm bones of the saint. Check, for instance, if  the forearm in Bari and the index finger in Rome originate from the same person.

And you could also use 3-D forensic facial reconstruction techniques to shape the face of Thomas in clay...

Heracleon- (II Century) is the earliest author to throw a light on St.Thomas’s carrier; his grandparents might have known the Apostle. Now, discussing the problem of witness and blood martyrdom, he states in a casual way, as something well known, that Matthew, Philip, Thomas, and Levi(Thaddaues) had not met violent deaths. And Clement of Alexandria (150-211/16 A.D.) who quotes this Passage of Heracleon and corrects some of his ideas, does not challenge this facts.
