49.   There are imported into this market-town, wine, Italian preferred, also Laodicean and Arabian; copper, tin, and lead; coral and topaz; thin clothing and inferior sorts of all kinds; bright-colored girdles a cubit wide; storax, sweet clover, flint glass, realgar, antimony, gold and silver coin, on which there is a profit when exchanged for the money of the country; and ointment, but not very costly and not much. And for the King there are brought into those places very costly vessels of silver, singing boys, beautiful maidens for the harem, fine wines, thin clothing of the finest weaves, and the choicest ointments. There are exported from these places spikenard, costus, bdellium, ivory, agate and carnelian, lycium, cotton cloth of all kinds, silk cloth, mallow cloth, yarn, long pepper and such other things as are brought here from the various market-towns. Those bound for this market-town from Egypt make the voyage favorably about the month of July, that is Epiphi.

50.   Beyond Barygaza the adjoining coast extends in a straight line from north to south; and so this region is called Dachinabades, for dachanos in the language of the natives means "south." The inland country back from the coast toward the east comprises many desert regions and great mountains; and all kinds of wild beasts--leopards, tigers, elephants, enormous serpents, hyenas, and baboons of many sorts; and many populous nations, as far as the Ganges.

51.   Among the market-towns of Dachinabades there are two of special importance; Pathana, distant about twenty days' journey south from Barygaza; beyond which, about ten days' journey east, there is another very great city, Tagara. There are brought down to Barygaza from these places by wagons and through great tracts without roads, from Pathana carnelian in great quantity, and from Tagara much common cloth, all kinds of muslins and mallow cloth, and other merchandise brought there locally from the regions along the sea-coast. And the whole course to the end of Damirica [=Limyrike] is seven thousand stadia; but the distance is greater to the Coast Country.

52.   The market-towns of this region are, in order, after Barygaza: Suppara, and the city of Calliena, which in the time of the elder Saraganus became a lawful Market-town; but since it came into the possession of Sandares the port is much obstructed, and Greek ships landing there may chance to be taken to Barygaza under guard.

53.   Beyond Calliena there are other market-towns of this region; Semylla, Mandagora, Pala patma, Meligara, Byzantium, Togarum and Aurannohoas. Then there are the islands called Sesecrienae and that of the Aegidii, and that of the Caenitae, opposite the place called Chersonesus (and in these places there are pirates) and after this the White Island. Then come Naura and Tyndis, the first markets of Damirica [=Limyrike], and then Muziris and Nelcynda, which are now of leading importance.

54.   Tyndis is of the Kingdom of Cerobothra; it is a village in plain sight by the sea. Muziris, of the same Kingdom, abounds in ships sent there with cargoes from Arabia, and by the Greeks; it is located on a river, distant from Tyndis by river and sea five hundred stadia, and up the river from the shore twenty stadia. Nelcynda is distant from Muziris by river and sea about five hundred stadia, and is of another Kingdom, the Pandian. This place also is situated on a river, about one hundred and twenty stadia from the sea.

55.   There is another place at the mouth of this river, the village of Bacare; to which ships drop down on the outward voyage from Nelcynda, and anchor in the roadstead to take on their cargoes; because the river is full of shoals and the channels are not clear. The kings of both these market-towns live in the interior. And as a sign to those approaching these places from the sea there are serpents coming forth to meet you, black in color, but shorter, like snakes in the head, and with blood-red eyes.

56.   They send large ships to these market-towns on account of the great quantity and bulk of pepper and malabathrum. There are imported here, in the first place, a great quantity of coin; topaz, thin clothing, not much; figured linens, antimony, coral, crude glass, copper, tin, lead; wine, not much, but as much as at Barygaza; realgar and orpiment; and wheat enough for the sailors, for this is not dealt in by the merchants there. There is exported pepper, which is produced in quantity in only one region near these markets, a district called Cottonara. Besides this there are ex-ported great quantities of fine pearls, ivory, silk cloth, spikenard from the Ganges, malabathrum from the places in the interior, transparent stones of all kinds, diamonds and sapphires, and tortoise-shell; that from Chryse Island, and that taken among the islands along the coast of Damirica [=Limyrike]. They make the voyage to this place in a favorable season who set out from Egypt about the month of July, that is Epiphi.

Akanānūru 57, Nakkeerar, Pālai Thinai – What the hero said to his heart, when he was in the wasteland
A bat with small delicate wings and red
legs flies in the vast sky with water, its
body parched in the hot sun.  It fails to
find fruits and thinks about the times
when there was
abundant food available, and feels sad.

The long aerial roots on a short-trunked
fig tree with dried branches drape down,
and attacked by winds, they sway and touch
a big, rough boulder below, looking like
an elephant lifting its huge trunk.

In this hot mountain with long paths
and villages, we are alone.
My lover will suffer greatly, crying
day and night, distressed like those who
got deep wounds in the uproarious
battle when Pāndiyan Neduncheliyan with
chariots with banners, and horses with
trimmed manes laid seige to Musiri town
and killed enemy elephants.

I wonder whether her splendid, pretty
small forehead which used to be like the
bright moon with many rays, has become
pale, the color of small peerkai flowers!

Meanings:   சிறு பைந்தூவி – with small delicate wings, செங்கால் பேடை – female with red legs, நெடு நீர் வானத்து – vast sky with water, வாவுப் பறை – bat with wings, நீந்தி – flies, வெயில் அவிர் உருப்பொடு – heat of the sun, வந்து கனி பெறாஅது – without getting fruits, பெறு நாள் யாணர் உள்ளி – thinks about the days it used to get in abundance, பையாந்து புகல் ஏக்கற்ற – it is sad and it pines when it comes, புல்லென் உலவை – parched branches,  குறுங்கால் இற்றி – fig tree with short trunk, புன் தலை – dried top, நெடு வீழ் – long hanging roots, இரும்பிணர்த் துறுகல் தீண்டி – touching the dark/big rough boulders, வளி பொர – attacked by the wind, பெருங்கை யானை – elephant with huge trunk, நிவப்பின் தூங்கும் – like it has lifted, குன்ற வைப்பின் – mountain villages, என்றூழ் நீள் இடை – hot long path, யாமே எமியம் ஆக – we are alone, தாமே – it is, பசு நிலா விரிந்த பல் கதிர் மதியின் – new/full moon with spread rays, பெரு நல் ஆய் கவின் – great fine beauty, ஒரீஇ – removed, சிறு பீர் வீ ஏர் வண்ணம் கொண்டன்று கொல்லோ – has it become the color of the beautiful tinypeerkai flowers, sponge gourd, ridge gourd, கொய் சுவல் – trimmed tuft, புரவி – horses, கொடித் தேர்ச் செழியன் – Pāndiyan king with flags on his chariot, முது நீர் முன்றுறை முசிறி – ancient waters Musiri front port, முற்றி – surrounded, களிறு பட – killed elephants, எருக்கிய – killed, கல்லென் ஞாட்பின் – uproarious battle, அரும் புண் உறுநரின் – like those who got deep wounds, வருந்தினள் பெரிது அழிந்து – she was sad like those ruined with deep wounds, பானாள் – midnight, கங்குலும் பகலும் ஆனாது அழுவோள் – cries night and day, ஆய் சிறு நுதலே – pretty small forehead

Puranānūru 343, Poet: Paranar, Thinai: Kānji, Thurai: Makatpāl Kānji
She will not agree if someone is unworthy of her,
even if they came humbly with abundant fine gifts,
precious like Musiri of Kuttuvan with a gold garland,
where the ocean roars like drums, paddy traded for
fish is heaped on boats making houses and boats look
the same, and black pepper heaped in houses make them
appear like the uproarious ocean shores, gold wares
from ships are brought to the shore by boats through
backwaters, and the king gives precious things from
the mountain and ocean to those who come, and liquor
is abundant like water.  Also, her father will not give her
in marriage.

Will the fine, large city suffer, since those who have come
have placed ladders to force their way in, and sighing
kites rest on the middle wall of the fort, the paths to it
protected by warriors?

Notes:  Poet Parananar wrote Puranānūru poems 4, 63, 141, 142, 144, 145, 336, 341, 343, 348, 352, 354 and 369.   There are 20 Puranānūru poems – 336 through 355, that describe situations where the three mighty Tamil kings come for the hands of young girls from ancient clans, which refuse their daughters in marriage.  The brothers and fathers fight with their weapons and chase away the suitors.   The suitors cause trouble to the towns, and the people in such towns live in fear.

Meanings:  மீன் நொடுத்து – selling fish, நெல் குவைஇ – paddy heaped, மிசை அம்பியின் – on boats, மனை மறுக்குந்து – confusing that they are houses, மனைக் குவைஇய கறி மூடையால் – the bags of black pepper in the houses, கலிச் சும்மைய கரை கலக் குறுந்து – confusing like the uproarious ocean shores, கலம் தந்த பொற் பரிசம் – the gold wares from the ships, கழித் தோணியால் கரை சேர்க்குந்து – brought them to the shore by small boats from the backwaters, மலைத் தாரமும் கடல் தாரமும் – precious things from the mountains and ocean, தலைப் பெய்து – mixed, வருநர்க்கு ஈயும் – gives to those who come, புனல் அம் கள்ளின் – liquor like water, பொலந் தார்க் குட்டுவன் முழங்கு கடல் முழவின் முசிறி அன்ன – like Musiri city where the ocean roars like drums, நலஞ்சால் விழுப் பொருள் பணிந்து கொடுப்பினும் – even if given humble, esteemed gifts, புரையர் அல்லோர் – other than great men, வரையலள் இவள் – she will not agree, எனத் தந்தையும் கொடாஅன் – her father won’t give her, ஆயின் வந்தோர் – so those who came, வாய்ப்ப – to enter, இறுத்த ஏணி – ladders placed (to enter), ஆயிடை வருந்தின்று கொல்லோ தானே – will they suffer, பருந்து உயிர்த்து – kites sigh and rest on the middle wall, இடை மதில் சேக்கும் புரிசை – fort, படை மயங்கு ஆரிடை – paths protected by warriors/weapons, நெடு நல் ஊரே – huge good town

 அகநானூறு 149, எருக்காட்டூர் தாயங்கண்ணனார்பாலைத் திணை – தலைவன் தன் நெஞ்சிடம் சொன்னது

Akanānūru 149, Erukkoottu Thāyankannanār, Pālai Thinai – What the hero said to his heart
Clans of bears thrust their big hands into tall,
red mounds built over time by small termites,
and get food.  Tiring from that, they eat white
iruppai flowers with hollow stems.
Even if I am able to obtain rare wealth quite
easily, I will not go on such a long
wasteland path.  May you live long, my heart!

In Chēran’s prosperous Musiri town, the huge
and beautiful Sulli river flows, muddied with
white foam.  The Yavanas come with their
fine ships, bearing gold, and leave with pepper.
Pāndiyan who is victorious in wars and owns many
tall, fine elephants, surrounded the town with
uproar, won a difficult war, and seized the gold
goddess statue.  To the west of his Mathurai
city where banners sway in the streets, is
Murukan’s Kundram with endless festivities, and
victory flags with pea****s with spots.  The stripes
on her beautiful eyes with clear tears are like
a flower strand woven with bee-swarming blue
waterlilies from the long, deep springs of
Murukan’s hill.

Notes:  Akanānūru 8, 72, 81, 88, 112, 149, 247, 257, 307 and Natrinai 125, 325 and 336 have descriptions of bears attacking termite mounds.  There are many poems which describe bears eating iruppai flowers.

Meanings:   சிறு புன் சிதலை – tiny termites, சேண் முயன்று எடுத்த – created with great effort, நெடும் செம் புற்றத்து – tall, red termite mound, ஒடுங்கிரை முனையின் – hating that, புல் அரை – parched trunk, இருப்பைத் தொள்ளை வான் பூ – white flowers of iruppai with hollow, Indian Butter Tree, South Indian Mahua,இலுப்பை,வஞ்சி, பெருங்கை எண்கின் – of bears with large hands, இருங்கிளை – large clan/herd, கவரும் – takes, அத்த நீள் இடைப் போகி – went on the long wasteland path, நன்றும் அரிது செய் விழுப்பொருள் எளிதினின் பெறினும் வாரேன் – even if I earn rare wealth easily, வாழி என் நெஞ்சே – may you live long, my heart, சேரலர் சுள்ளியம் பேரியாற்று – big beautiful Sulli river of Cherās, வெண் நுரை கலங்க – white foam muddied,  யவனர் தந்த brought by the Ionians, வினை மாண் நன்கலம் – splendid at work, fine ships, பொன்னொடு வந்து கறியொடு பெயரும் – come with gold and leave with black pepper, வளம் கெழு முசிறி – prosperity filled Musiri town, ஆர்ப்பெழ – as uproar arises, வளஇ – surrounded, அரும் சமம் கடந்து – won a difficult war, படிமம் வவ்விய – seized the statue, நெடு நல் யானை – tall fine elephant, அடு போர்ச் செழியன் – Cheliyan of murderous battles, கொடி நுடங்கு மறுகின் – streets with swaying flags, கூடல் குடாஅது – west side of Mathurai city, பல் பொறி மஞ்ஞை – pea**** with spots, வெல் கொடி உயரிய – victorious flags lifted,  ஒடியா விழவின் – unending festivals,  நெடியோன் குன்றத்து – Thiruparankundram of Murukan, வண்டு பட – swarmed by bees, நீடிய குண்டு சுனை நீலத்து – blue waterlilies from the vast, deep springs, Nymphaea caerulea, எதிர் மலர் – flowers placed on opposite sides, பிணையல் – garland, அன்ன – like, இவள் அரி மதர் மழைக் கண் – her striped beautiful moist eyes, தெண் பனி கொளவே – with clear tears

Puranānūru 17, Poet Kurunkōliyūr Kilār sang to Chēramān Yānaikatchēy MāntharanChēral Irumporai, Thinai: Vākai, Thurai: Arasa Vākai, Iyan Moli
From southern Kumari to the mountains in the north,
from the oceans on the east to those on the west,
the hills, the mountains, and the forests and the land,
sing your praises in unison!  You are heir to those
who ruled this entire world as their bright wheels
rolled sweetly!  You avoid cruelty, holding your
rod erect and ruling with righteousness!

Ferocious warrior who rules those who live in cool
Thondi with low-hanging clusters of coconuts, wide
fields, mountain boundaries, and broad seashore groves
where the sand is like moonlight, and backwaters
where flowers are like flame, are clear!
Like a killer elephant with long tusks, large and mighty,
that might have disdain for the trap cover, fall into a
deep pit, ruin it, free himself and join his herd, you with
great strength, have escaped, overcoming your hurdles,
and many who were despaired, rejoiced.

Your relatives praised you, while your enemy kings served you
thinking that they might gain back their land and their fine
jewels, if they were agreeable to you.  Enemy kings who did not
expect you to be back thought that if you glanced at them, they
would lose their tall walls with raised banners, and they served
you because of your glory.

I have come here to see you and to praise you, your greatness!
Your army has many shields that awe, like massed clouds, and
many huge elephants that the honey bees take for mountains,
and an army that is swollen and huge as an ocean that clouds
draw water from.  O King who rules the west!  Your generosity
is without limits!  Your royal drum roars like thunder that
shatters the heads of the snakes with venomous fangs!

Notes:   Puranānūru 17, 20 and 22 were written by this poet for this king.  He belonged to the Irumporai clan.  He lost in battle to Pāndiyan Thalaiyālankānathu Cheruvendra Neduncheliyan and was imprisoned.  He overcame the prison guard and returned to his kingdom to rule.  His acquired name is because of his looks which were like that of an elephant.  Poet Kurunkōliyūr Kilār describes him as ‘one with elephant looks’ – வேழ நோக்கின், in Purananuru 22. There was a belief that thunder ruined and killed snakes.  Puranānūru 17, 58, 126, 211, 366, 369, Akanānūru 68, 92, 119, 182, 202, 274, 323, 328, Kalithokai 113, Kurunthokai 158, 190, 268, 391 and Natrinai 37, 51, 114, 129, 144, 238, 255, 264, 347 and 383 have similar descriptions of thunder ruining or killing snakes.

சிறு பைந்தூவிச் செங்கால் பேடை
நெடுநீர் வானத்து வாவுப் பறை நீந்தி

Akanānūru 57, Nakkeerar, Pālai Thinai – What the hero said to his heart, when he was in the wasteland
A bat with small delicate wings and red
legs flies in the vast sky with water, its
body parched in the hot sun.  It fails to
find fruits and thinks about the times
when there was
abundant food available, and feels sad.

The long aerial roots on a short-trunked
fig tree with dried branches drape down,
and attacked by winds, they sway and touch
a big, rough boulder below, looking like
an elephant lifting its huge trunk.

In this hot mountain with long paths
and villages, we are alone.
My lover will suffer greatly, crying
day and night, distressed like those who
got deep wounds in the uproarious
battle when Pāndiyan Neduncheliyan with
chariots with banners, and horses with
trimmed manes laid seige to Musiri town
and killed enemy elephants.

I wonder whether her splendid, pretty
small forehead which used to be like the
bright moon with many rays, has become
pale, the color of small peerkai flowers!

Akanānūru 141, Nakkeerar, Pālai Thinai – What the heroine said to her friend
Greetings my friend!
My nights are sweet with dreams;
my days have good omens in our
decorated house;  and my heart is happy.

Will he come
when the Hare Constellation, with
the moon in its chest, joins the Pleiades
Constellation in the middle of the night,
when farming dies down because
the rain in the sky moved away,
and when Kārthikai festive lights
are lit and flower garlands are hung
in the streets of our ancient town?

A small-bangled bride with fragrant oils
in her soft hair joins other women and boils
milk.  Women pound paddy with their strong
wooden pestles, and herons perched on nearby
banana trees with sweet fruits fly away in fear.

He went to earn wealth and fame like
that of Idaiyāru town
that belongs to the victorious Karikāl Chōlan
who lifts people who are facing tough times.

He went on the honey-fragrant, tall Vēnkadam
mountain paths, where male monkeys leap and
frolic, dropping fresh naranthai flowers
that grow between the boulders near vēngai
trees that have tiger-colored flowers with dots.
