Indias vain search for peace in Paks diplomacy of the absurd

Delhis Pakistan policy has all the emotional intensity of a battered wife with a karmic commitment to marriage.Justice must surrender to appeasement in the pursuit of some higher purpose.
Rehman Malik was Pakistans home minister when killers backed by ISI and organised by a terrorist outfit,Lashkar-e-Taiba,murdered innocents in Mumbai on November 26,2008.Malik breezed into Delhi to tell India that he had no desire to pursue,let alone apprehend,the mastermind of 26/11,Lashkar chief Hafiz Saeed.It was time,he added gratuitously,to move on.
Rehman Malik does not understand niceties.He refuses to wear a cloak patched with the grace of dextrous language and the discretion of diplomacy.He is neither unique in Pakistans governing elite,nor a maverick;he is dangerous only because he is blunt.He knows the truth about the narrative rife within the cantonment and those caustic by-lanes along the main street which distrust India,despise its secularism and invest in conflict.He was telling it straight with the only kind of mind he possesses,and applause duly swelled from his many-tiered constituency within Pakistans media,armed forces and madrassas,a powerful troika.
Maliks logic goes like this: Mumbai terrorism is Indias failure,not Pakistans fault.India is responsible for the root cause,Kashmir,and therefore must factor in the possibility that there will always be freedom-fighters determined to rescue Kashmir Muslims from Hindu domination just as Pakistan was liberated from Hindu rule in 1947.Indias intelligence agencies failed to prevent the terrorist attack in 2008 despite the fact that operatives like Headley were roaming around helped by Indian friends and well-wishers.Why should Pakistan punish fighters who believe Kashmir should be part of Pakistan It is Indias problem,and if India hangs one of them,that is part of war.So do not blame Pakistan and lets keep riding the twin horses of talks and cricket till the next time.
This is the mindset that remains the biggest obstacle to peace between India and Pakistan.Malik has simply lifted this truth from private discourse into public space.
This leaves Indians desirous of peace befuddled.One of the secondary ploys in this great game played in toxic fog is the second-track dialogue,a set-piece interaction meant to smooth rough-edge problems before they can be discussed formally by governments.One can appreciate the peaceniks dilemma: to admit this truth is to accept defeat even before the foreplay has begun.Indians travel to Lahore possibly prepared to be whelmed,and discover they have been overwhelmed by hospitality which is effusive and genuine because it comes from the heart.And then they confuse this with Islamabads policies,which emerge from the head;one that swings between insecurity and aggression.
The eventual realisation that war is futile never seems to prevent successive Pakistani leaders,civilian or military,from attempting yet another provocation in the hope of weakening India.In 1947,the first serious decision taken by Jinnah and Liaquat Ali Khan was not how to stabilize and build their new nation,but to seize Kashmir through war,when its status would have been determined through peaceful negotiations.(Jawaharlal Nehru,in a confidential note to Mountbatten,formally suggested that discussions on Kashmir,which had what was known as standstill agreements with both India and Pakistan,begin in the spring of 1948.) Ayub Khan and Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto,who wanted to fight India for a thousand years,launched their own invasion in 1965.Yahya Khan attacked India in 1971 and lost half his country.Zia ul Haq sustained Khalistani secessionists in an insurrection
which damaged India very deeply.Pervez Musharraf entered Kargil even before his coup against Nawaz Sharif.Asif Zardari was in office when Mumbai happened,and his home minister has shrugged off Indias demand for accountability with jibes,halftruths and explanations that are manifestly dishonest.
Pakistani leaders have tried everything from the implausible to the unforgiveable without worrying about the unacceptable.The Indian response,most often but not always,is best summed up in a Urdu couplet: Rasmein ulfat ko nibhayen kaise,Har taraf aag hai daman ko bachaye kaise (rough,and inadequate translation: How do I honour the rules of love;there is fire everywhere,how do I save myself from flames).
Pessimism is not a solution.There is hope in Pakistani hospitality.The corridors of power in Islamabad are arid;but in the heart of most Pakistanis there is fertile space for harmony.This is more easily said than done,for governments become a barrier,but it can be done.Cricket is an excellent way of reaching out to the people.Sport easily slips out of the grasp of authority and reminds people of the enormous dividends that lie in peace.A great sportsman,Imran Khan,could be part of Pakistans government in 2013.Is it time for optimism

BJP paid Gujarat Muslims not to vote: Digvijaya Singh

After Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi's hat-trick in the state assembly elections, Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh on Saturday accused the BJP of paying Rs.500 to each Muslim in the state to stop them from voting. "This has been the BJP's strategy for the last 15-20 years. The BJP cadre and candidates fan out in Muslim-majority constituencies and enforce a lower voter turnout by buying them off. They blatantly distribute cash among the Muslim population and take away their voter ID cards, thus keeping them away from polling booths," Singh told news channel Headlines Today in an interview.

"If you see the voting pattern in Muslim-dominated areas, the turnout is never more than 25-30%. Voters are bought over for as less as Rs.500. This is not a wild allegation. I have evidence and am saying it with full responsibility," said Singh.

According to Singh, the BJP swept 12 of the 19 constituencies in Gujarat where Muslims are in majority.

He said Modi's apology for the 2002 communal riots in the state in January had nothing to do with the poll results.

"In some areas, there was polarisation of votes and in most areas, the BJP unleashed its strategy to gag Muslims by forcing a low turnout by paying them off. This is BJP's pogrom not only in Gujarat but all over India. I have proof and there are statistics to back my claim," said Singh.

Responding to a query if battle lines for 2014 were already being drawn for a clash between Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi and Modi, Singh said: "Modi's influence is limited to Gujarat but Rahul has an overarching appeal across the nation. The two cannot be compared. Rahul Gandhi will not project himself as the prime ministerial candidate. Elections will be fought under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi. If we win, the party's parliamentary board will decide on the prime ministerial candidate."

"The BJP is stuffed with prime ministerial aspirants who do not even have a constituency. LK Advani contests from Gujarat, Arun Jaitley and (BJP president) Nitin Gadkari have never fought elections and Sushma Swaraj is always on the hunt for a safe seat. Modi is the only leader rooted to the ground. And he's ahead in the race as the prime ministerial candidate," Singh said.

Washington: Zero Dark Thirty,a Hollywood movie on the killing of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden,is just a dramatization and not a realistic portrayal of the facts,Americas spy chief has said in a rare comment.
In a message to his employees,CIA acting director Michael Morell said,I would not normally comment on a Hollywood film,but I think it (is) important to put Zero Dark Thirty,which deals with one of the most significant achievements in our history,into some context, he wrote.He said the manhunt for Osama was a decade-long effort that depended on the selfless commitment.PTI

Five Indians captive for 3 yrs rescued

Nairobi (Kenya): Authorities in Somalias semi-autonomous Puntland region say their forces raided a hijacked ship and safely rescued 22 hostages,including five Indians,who had been held captive for nearly three years.
A statement from the Puntland government said on Saturday that their forces captured the Panama-flagged MV Iceberg 1 which was docked near the Garaad coastal village in Mudung region.
Puntland ports and antipiracy minister Saeed Mohamed Rage said the crew members include eight Yemenis,five Indians,two Pakistanis,four Ghanaians,two Sudanese,and a Philippine.The ship was hijacked March 29,2010.Close to 120 seafarers are still held by Somali pirates,though that number is considerably down from the height of the piracy crisis,when more than 600 hostages were held at once.AGENCIES

பெண்கள் தெருவில் நடக்கும் போது கறுப்பு முக்காட்டில் மறைத்து வைப்பது அவர்களின் கூந்தல் முமீன்களை கிளர்ச்சியடைய வைத்து வெகு வேலை நடந்து விடக்கூடாது என்பதால் தான் என்கிறீர்கள். சரி.

ஆனால் சிறிது காலமாக 5- 6 வயது சிறுமிகளுக்குக் கூட முக்காடு போட்டு விடுகிறீர்களே? அந்த சிறுமிகளின் கூந்தலும் முமீன்களை கிளர்ச்சியடைய வைத்து விடுமா என்ன?

ஆம் என்றா சொல்கிறீர்கள்? ஓ 53 வயதான அரைக்கிழ முகமது 6 வயதான ஆயிஷாவின் கூந்தலைப் பார்த்து கிளர்ச்சி அடைந்ததைப் போல் எந்த செயலுக்கும் முகமதின் வழிகாட்டல் (சுன்னா) இருக்கிறதா என்று ஆராய்ந்து பார்த்து பின்பற்றும் முமீன்கள் இதிலும் முகமதின் வழிகாட்டலைப் பின்பற்ற ஆரம்பித்து விட்டார்கள் என்றா சொல்கிறீர்கள்? வாஸ்தவமான முன்னெச்சரிக்கை தான்.

ஆனால் 2-3 வயதுடைய பெண் குழந்தைகளுக்கும் முக்காடு போட்டுவிட்டு தூக்கிக் கொண்டு திரிய ஆரம்பித்து விட்டீர்களே? இதற்கு கூட சுன்னா உண்டு என்று கூறிவிடாதீர்கள். என்னது? ஆமாவா? இதற்கும் சுன்னா இருக்கிறதா? அடக் கொடுமையே?

ஓ எனக்கு இப்போது நினைவிற்கு வருகிறது. முகமது கடைசி காலத்தில் நோயுற்று இருந்த போது ஏதோ ஒரு மூன்று வயது பெண் குழந்தையைப் பார்த்து நான் குணமடைந்து மீண்டால் இந்த பெண்ணை நான் தான் நிக்கா செய்து கொள்வேன் என்று கூறியதாக ஒரு ஹதித் இருக்கிறதே. அதைக் கூறுகிறீர்களா?

Laden had to pay Rs 50k bribe for Abbottabad lair

Islamabad: Even the worlds most wanted terrorist could not escape the bribery dragnet.Osama bin Ladens safehouse in Pakistans garrison city Abbottabad was built after paying a bribe of Rs 50,000 to a revenue official,a media report on Wednesday said.
The bribe was paid to the patwari so that Osama bin Laden could construct the compound with a threestorey building,a 14-foot boundary wall and an iron fence,the Urdu daily Jang said in a report.
Details of the bribe emerged after Pakistani officials translated a diary that was purportedly kept by bin Laden.Bin Laden,54,was killed by US commandos during a raid on the compound,located a short distance from the Pakistan Military Academy,on May 2 last year.
The compound was demolished by the Pakistan army earlier this year.Officials found the diary along with 137,000 documents in the compound.Bin Laden used to write in the diary every day,the report said.
The al-Qaida chief reportedly described in the diary how he had to bribe revenue officials for constructing his compound.The patwari,who was later arrested by Pakistani security agencies,was completely ignorant about the identity of bin Laden when he took the bribe.
The diary reportedly revealed that bin Laden was well aware of the practice of revenue officials seeking bribes and even gave his permission for paying off the patwari.A judicial commission that investigated bin Ladens presence in Pakistan and the US raid has pointed out weaknesses in state institutions in its report and delineated the poor performance of these organizations,the Jang reported.
The commissions report is yet to be presented to the government and officials have not said whether it will be made public.PTI

Bilawal makes foray into Pak politics today

To Address Event On 5th Death Anniv Of Benazir As Stage Is Set For Polls Next Year

Islamabad: Pakistan Peoples Party chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will make his formal entry into the hurly burly of Pakistani politics at an event to be held on Thursday to mark the fifth death anniversary of his mother Benazir Bhutto.
Bilawal will make his entry into active politics during the meeting to be held at Garhi Khuda Bux (in Sindh) and take over the PPPs campaign for next years general election, said a confidant of President Asif Ali Zardari.
Both 24-year-old Bilawal and his father will make speeches at the event to be held outside the Bhutto familys mausoleum near the PPPs stronghold of Naudero,said the confidant who did not want to be named.There has been speculation that Zardari might also announce the date for the next general election at Thursdays event but the confidant said no final decision had been made in this regard.The president is keeping things close to his chest and he is the person who will make the decision about announcing the date for the polls, the confidant said.
The current National Assembly or lower house of parliament will complete its fiveyear term in March and PPP leaders have indicated that the next general election is likely to be held in April or May.Polls will simultaneously be held to the four provincial assemblies.
During his speech at the event in Garhi Khuda Bux on Thursday,Bilawal is expected to make public a report on the investigation into Benazir Bhuttos assassination by a suicide bomber after an election rally in Rawalpindi in 2007.Bilawal himself cannot contest polls till he turns 25 in September next year.
Zardari,who is the cochairman of the PPP,has convened a meeting of the partys central executive committee at Naudero on Friday.This meeting is expected to fine tune the PPPs campaign for the polls,party insiders said.
The PPPs top leadership was mulling a move to elevate former premier Yousaf Raza Gilani to the post of co-chairman but this is now unlikely to happen due to opposition from several leaders,including interior minister Rehman Malik and law minister Farooq Naek,sources in the party said.A recent supreme court judgement that said the president should be non-partisan and have no political affiliations has made it almost impossible for Zardari to play an active role in the PPPs election campaign.The Lahore HC is hearing a petition seeking action against Zardari under the contempt of court law for failing to act on an order that expected him to give up the post of chief of the PPP.
Religious affairs minister Khursheed Shah said that Zardari would not lead or participate in the PPPs election campaign.Zardari was keen to rope in Gilani to play a greater role as co-chairman of the PPP.The move was shot down because of opposition from some leaders.The party felt it would be better to avoid any divisions just before the elections, said a source.
Gilani is now expected to be the main force in the PPPs campaign in Punjab as the partys current provincial head,federal minister Manzoor Wattoo,has failed miserably in mounting a challenge to the PML-N.PTI

Morsi signs draft statute into law

Cairo: Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi has signed into law a new Islamist-drafted constitution which he says will help end political turmoil and allow him to focus on fixing the fragile economy.
Results announced on Tuesday showed Egyptians had approved the text with an overwhelming 63.8%,paving the way for a parliamentary election in about two months.
The presidency said Morsi signed a decree enforcing the charter late on Tuesday after the official announcement of the result of a referendum approving the basic law,Egypts first constitution since Mubaraks ouster.
The text has sharpened painful divisions in the country and prompted often violent protests on the streets of Cairo.Opposition groups condemn the new statut as too Islamist and undemocratic.
But Morsi believes that the new constitution offers enough protection to all groups,saying many Egyptians are fed up with protests that have prevented a return to normalcy.REUTERS

Bilawal marks political debut with feisty speech

Islamabad:Slain former PM Benazir Bhuttos 24-year-old son Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Thursday made his formal entry into Pakistani politics,pledging to protect his country and its fledgling democratic system from dictators and terrorists.A combative Bilawal also took on the judiciary for lack of action to punish those arrested for the murder of his mother.
With Benazir Bhutto as my witness,I vow that the Pakistan Peoples Party will not allow any dictator to snatch the peoples rights and that the PPP will not be afraid of any terrorist, Bilawal told tens of thousands people who had gathered at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh in Sindh province to mark benazirs 5th death anniversary.
Though he will not be eligible to contest polls till he turns 25 next September,Bilawal,chairman of the party,is expected to lead the PPPs campaign for next years general election.
In an emotional speech in Urdu replete with references to sacrifices made by PPP founder Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and his daughter Benazir,Bilawal said,We have chosen the difficult path of democracy that has tears,thorns and stones.This is the same path that (Benazir Bhutto) taught us to walk on.
The PPP,he said,was the biggest wall against terrorism while other political forces feared to even take the name of terrorists.
Bilawal paid tribute to others killed by the Taliban and militant groups,including Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer,federal minister Shahbaz Bhatti and Awami National Party leader Bashir Ahmad Bilour.
While Bilawal did not name the PPPs opponents in his speech,he singled out the judiciary questioned supreme court Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry on why he had not acted on an application from his father,President Asif Ali Zardari,seeking a review of the death sentence given to Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.He also questioned the lack of action by the judiciary to punish those arrested for the murder of Benazir Bhutto,who was assassinated by a suicide bomber after an election rally in Rawalpindi on December 27,2007.

Cairo: President Mohamed Morsi of Egypt took responsibility on Wednesday for mistakes during the run-up to ratification of the new constitution and urged Egyptians to appreciate the fierce disagreements about it as a healthy phenomenon of their new democracy.
Appealing for unity after the bitter debate over the charter,which was finalized by his Islamist allies over the objections of opposition parties and the Coptic Christian Church,Morsi pledged to respect the one-third of voters who cast ballots against it.This is their right,because Egypt of the revolution can never feel annoyed by the active patriotic opposition, he said.We dont want to go back to the era of the one opinion and fabricated fake majorities.
But Morsi offered no concrete concessions,and did not acknowledge specific errors,saying,There have been mistakes here and there,and I bear responsibility.
Still,his attempt at reconciliation,however vague or superficial,marked another notable step in Egypts political transition.The speech was a stark contrast to the one he gave 20 days ago,when he sounded far more like his predecessor,Hosni Mubarak.And,in Egypt,where previous presidents often jailed political opponents,Morsis limited mea culpa appeared to be the first of its kind in decades.NYT NEWS SERVICE

Taliban seize 22 Pak paratroopers

Peshawar:The Pakistani Taliban have seized at least 22 men from a regional paramilitary force in attacks on three checkpoints in northern Pakistan,a regional official said on Thursday.
Taliban and other Pakistani sources put the figure at 30.The raids close to the provincial capital of Peshawar follows two high-profile attacks in the city this month,underlining the Talibans willingness to take on the Pakistani state amid speculation of divisions among senior Talibani leadership.
At least 22 men were missing,two had been killed and one was injured after militants armed with rocket-propelled grenades and rifles launched the overnight attacks,said Naveed Akbar,a regional official whose remit covers the Levies,or tribal force,units.
Eight of the paramilitary soldiers have been killed,Taliban spokesman Mohammed Afridi said in Khyber agency,or region.He said the group had captured 30 soldiers.Another spokesman,Ihsanullah Ihsan,said 33 were taken.
However,military sources said no soldiers or police were missing.
The kidnappings follow a daring suicide attack on Peshawar airport and a bombing that killed a senior politician and eight others at a political rally in the city earlier this month.
It was not immediately clear whether the uptick in attacks was connected to speculation that the head of the Pakistani Taliban,Hakimullah Mehsud,is losing control to his deputy.
There are many divisions within the group.One main point of contention is whether to focus on attacking US forces in Afghanistan or the military in Pakistan.REUTERS

Islamists attack Indian in Germany,slash tongue

Berlin: A 24-year Indian student in Bonn was brutally attacked by Islamic extremists who slashed his tongue when he refused to convert,German police said on Thursday.The student was attacked on Christmas eve when he was on the way to his place in Bonn.
The men enquired about his religion and asked him to convert to Islam,warning him that they would cut his tongue if he refused to do so,Der Spiegel reported.
The student,who was not identified,told the police that he was attacked by two men from behind after he ignored them.The attackers beat him up,slashed his tongue and fled in a car.Police spokesman did not give details of injuries but said the information that the victim gave was credible.
A passerby found the student and called an ambulance.The student was admitted to a local hospital and was released a day later.
The Bonn polices department for politically motivated crimes is investigating.
It is not the first time this year that Bonn has hit the headlines as a result of possible Islamist activity.In May,a Salafist was arrested after stabbing two police officers during a counter-demonstration against a display of caricatures of the Prophet by a local right-wing populist party.

How Arabs buy 'wives' and dump them in a few weeks

MiD DAY reporters posing as a would-be bride and her friend trying to help her.

Mumbai: A month-long investigation by MiD DAY journalists has revealed a twisted form of human trafficking that involves rich Arabs, greedy Qazis, sham marriages, agents and girls lured into the flesh trade or those looking for a quick buck.

The modus operandi: set up a temporary or time-bound wedding to a rich Arab. The affluent Arab offers a negotiated amount for the services of a 'wife' during his stay in India. The price for the 'booty' varies from Rs.15,000 to nearly a lakh for the 10-day marriage. Girls from poor families are sold like commodities to the Arabs, many of whom arrive on tourist visas from Saudi Arabia, UAE, Iran, Oman, Kuwait and Qatar. While this may seem shocking to many, the women involved in this latest form of flesh trade are often willing participants.

The Arab and The Qazi
These predators have been perpetrating a blatant crime under the veneer of nikaah, abusing the Islamic rules of marriage. Abusing the sanctioned provision which allows a Muslim man to have four wives at a time, many old Arabs are not just marrying minors in Mumbai and Hyderabad, but marrying more than one minor in a single trip to the country.

The Pimp and The Victim
A healthy stream of women keep flowing into the city from all parts of the country to solicit the Arab clientele who have turned Mumbai into a sex haven. For as little asRs 2,000 per job, scores of women line up every evening hoping to catch the eye of the adulterous tourist.

Over a month-long operation, Kranti Vibhute posed as a would-be bride and Bhupen Patel as her friend trying to help her get the deal. They found that these deal brokers, prostitutes and Qazis have been running this business quite explicitly.

A Qazi, who solemnises the weddings and also facilitates the divorce proceedings, takes 50 percent of the negotiated price as his cut. The agent, who sources the girls, takes 25 percent of the balance amount.

The pimps, cab drivers and sub-agents charge Rs. 500-1,000 per deal.

The Arab gets a sex slave for a temporary period, who he calls his 'wife', and takes her on a vacation with him. Once the honeymoon period is over, he brings her back dumps her with a 'talaaq' and goes back to the Qazi's office for a new bride. The girl gets her cut and lines up for the next husband to come her way.

The Qazis solemnise these sham marriages, in violation of Islamic principles of nikaah and talaaq. A woman cannot be married off to another man unless her first husband gives her a divorce, or she has sought khula (separation) and has completed the iddat period (a gap of at least three months and 13 days).

Victims?
Owing to abject poverty and wretched living conditions, many women are forced into the world of flesh trade. While some girls have fallen victim to the flesh trade, tricked by the promise of monetary benefits and a better standard of living, others have chosen the path to make a quick buck.

During the course of the operation, MiD DAY discovered that several women, who were once sold as brides to Arabs, have now turned into agents and pimps. The women now scout villages and cities looking for fresh blood to incorporate into the trade.

Barred Rehman Malik From Going Public Due To Differences,Says Media

Islamabad: Pakistans President Asif Ali Zardari stopped interior minister Rehman Malik from making public a report on the investigation into the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto,according to a media report on Saturday.
Zardari barred Malik from presenting the report at a meeting of the central executive committee of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party held on Benazirs fifth death anniversary on Thursday.The move came in the wake of an increase in differences between Zardari and Malik, Daily Express quoted its sources as saying.
The president issued instructions to Malik not to make the report public just hours before the PPP held a rally outside the Bhutto family mausoleum at Garhi Khuda Bakhsha in Sindh.Benazir was assassinated by a suicide bomber after addressing an election rally in Rawalpindi on December 27,2007.
Malik had earlier told the media about his intention to make the report public.
The report said Malik had even suggested that PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari should launch his political career by revealing the report,sources told the daily.
In the past few days,Malik has met members of the team from the federal investigation agency looking into Benazirs assassination and other senior officials.He had also personally overseen the publication of the report running into several hundred pages.
Malik had planned to distribute copies of the report among PPP leaders and journalists,the report said.
Zardari rejected Maliks suggestions and directed him not to present the report before the rally in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh.On receiving these instructions,Malik directed officials to stop the publication of the report which was in the final stages.
There has been considerable speculation in political circles in Islamabad about the reported differences between Zardari and Malik,sources said.PTI

Pakistan briefly lifts YouTube ban

Islamabad: Pakistan government on Saturday lifted its 3-month ban on YouTube,imposed to cut off access to clips from an anti-Islam film,only to reinstate it within less than an hour.
The Pakistan telecommunication authority directed internet service providers and mobile phone firms to unblock YouTube on Saturday afternoon.Within an hour,however,PM Raja Pervez Ashraf reinstated the ban after a right-wing journalist from the Jang news group reported that the anti-Islam film Innocence Of Muslims could still be accessed on YouTube.
Interior minister Rehman Malik had tweeted on Friday that Pakistani authorities would lift the ban on YouTube within 24 hours.He said that there was a great demand to unblock YouTube from all sections of society.PTI

Malappuram: Kerala Police have decided to blacklist Free Gaza Movement co-founder and globallyknown advocate of the Palestinian cause Paul Larudee,who was taken into custody from Tirur in Malappuram district on Saturday night,for violating visa norms in India.On Sunday evening,police issued a quit India notice to the American human rights activist,asking him to leave India as early as possible.If blacklisted,Larudee can never visit India again.
After police received information that Larudee,who has been in India since last three days on a tourist visa,was to attend a conference of Student Islamic Organisation at Tirur,a police team led by Malappuram SP K Sethuraman reached the venue took him into custody.The police team took Larudee into custody soon after he finished his speech on Youth and Arab Spring.Larudee was the chief guest at the conference.
Sethuraman told TOI that foreign personalities who have come to India on tourist visa cannot be allowed to attend functions or deliver speeches here as it will affect the law and order.No case was registered against Larudee as it will force him to stay in India for a long time.We want to avoid the situation that the Italian marines faced here,hence we have decided to issue a notice asking him to leave country, the SP said.
Larudee said he never expected such a humiliating approach from Indian police.I came here to speak about the Palestinian people.Once,great Indian leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru Nehru had raised the same demand for Palestine.I never want to hurt Indian people or speak against India.
Larudee will leave for the US from the Nedumbassery airport at 6am on Monday.Larudee had been earlier arrested and jailed by Israel for violating the countrys laws.

Taliban shoot dead 21 of 23 abducted Pak cops

Peshawar: Pakistani militants,who have escalated attacks in recent weeks,killed at least 41 people in two separate incidents,officials said on Sunday,challenging assertions that military offensives have broken the back of hardline Islamist groups.
Twenty-one tribal policemen believed to have been kidnapped by the Taliban were found shot to death in Pakistans troubled northwest tribal region early on Sunday,government officials said.They found the bodies shortly after midnight in the Jabai area of the frontier region of Peshawar after being notified by one policeman who escaped,said Naveed Akbar Khan,a top political official in the area.Another policeman was found seriously wounded,Khan said.
Officials said the men were executed one by one.They were tied up and blindfolded, Naveed Anwar,a senior administration official,said.They were lined up and shot in the head, said Habibullah Arif,another official.
The 23 policemen disappeared before dawn on Thursday,when militants armed with rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons attacked two posts in the region.Two other police officers were killed in the attacks.
Militants lined the officers up on a cricket field late on Saturday night and gunned them down,said another local official.
Taliban spokesman Ihsanullah Ihsan claimed responsibility for the attacks.We killed all the kidnapped men after a council of senior clerics gave a verdict for their execution.We didnt make any demand for their release because we dont spare any prisoners who are caught during fighting, he said.
Meanwhile,in a separate incident,20 Shia pilgrims died and 24 were wounded when a car bomb targeted their bus convoy as it headed toward the Iranian border in the southwest,a doctor said.
Witnesses said a blast targeted their three buses as they were overtaking a car about 60km west of Quetta,capital of sparsely populated Baluchistan province.
The bus next to us caught on fire immediately, said pilgrim Hussein Ali,60.We tried to save our companions,but were driven back by the intensity of the heat.
New York-based Human Rights Watch has noted more than 320 Shias killed this year in Pakistan and said attacks were on the rise.It said the governmens failure to catch or prosecute attackers suggested it was indifferent to the killings.

Sanaa: Al-Qaidas branch in Yemen has announced that it will pay tens of thousands of dollars to anyone who kills the United States ambassador in Sanaa or an American soldier in the country.

Washington: As he peered at the approaching metro train standing on the edge of platform on 40th and Lowery street station in Queens,Sunando Sen didnt see or hear the footsteps of death behind his back,much less realize it was racist and hate-filled.
This was New York,the most racially and ethnically diverse city on the planet,where the immigrant from Kolkota had lived comfortably for nearly two decades and was on the threshold of entrepreneurial success.
Mumbling incoherently,Erika Menendez had stood up from a bench she was sitting on,walked up behind Sen,46,and shoved him in the path of the oncoming train even as a few horrified witnesses saw the 8 pm incident,which was also captured in the stations videocams in grainy footage.She then bolted from the station,causing a city-wide hunt.
She pushed Sen,the 32-year old Menendez later told police when she was apprehended following a tip-off after a public sighting,because she hates Hindus and Muslims,who in her view brought down the citys World Trade Center twin towers on 9/11.
She was arrested on Saturday and charged with seconddegree murder.
Menendez is expected to be arraigned by Sunday morning.If convicted,she faces a maximum penalty of life in prison.By charging her with murder as a hate crime,the possible minimum sentence she faced would be extended to 20 years from 15 years,according to prosecutors.
The incident has stunned New York City,not the least because it is the second episode in a month of someone being shoved in the path of an oncoming train in a subway system that is more than 100 years old.Even in the troubled days after 9/11 such hate crimes were rare in NYC.
And ironically,the woman who harboured such racist sentiment and conflated Muslim and Hindu faith was herself Hispanic.Queens district attorney Richard Brown told the New York media that Menendez told the police she believed she had pushed a Muslim man off the platform because I hate Hindus and Muslims ever since 2001 when they put down the twin towers Ive been beating them up.
Beyond that,the hateful remarks allegedly made by the defendant and which precipitated the defendants actions should never be tolerated by a civilized society, Brown said,adding that he had no information on the defendants criminal or mental history and it will be up to the court to determine if she is fit to stand trial.
In an earlier incident on December 3,a Korean-American man died after he was shoved on to the path of an oncoming train in Queens by a homeless person,allegedly after an altercation.Deaths in New York subway is not unusual (there were 47 deaths in 2011),but they are mostly accidents and suicides,seldom homicides.
New Yorkers meanwhile mourned Sen,who came to city after enrolling at NYU in the early 1990s to study graphic design.He had only recently started a small printing business with financial backing from a college friend,and was working seven days a week to make it a success.
I didnt know anything about the business, his friend and business partner Sanjeeb Das said about Sen,who was single.He knew everything.We were close like brothers, said Das,who shared a placed with Sen from 1998 to 2005 before moving out to get married.Every weekend,he came to my house.He loved my small son.

Cairo: Egypt on Sunday dropped treason charges against top opposition leaders including ex-IAEA chief Mohammed ElBaradei,extending an olive branch to the leaders who had accused President Mohamed Morsi of trying to muzzle dissent.
The countrys top prosecutor had ordered an investigation into accusations against against the constitution party head ElBaradei,Nobel Prize laureate and former head of the Unbited Nations nuclear agency,along with Amr Moussa,former foreign minister and Hamdeen Sabahi,leader of the Dignity Party,of incitement to overthrow regime of President Morsi.
Moussa and Sabahy both had challenged Morsi for the post of the president in a June poll this year,which followed the 2011 uprising against the long-time dictator Hosni Mubarak that led to him stepping down from his post.
Asqalani,a member of the Freedoms Committee at the Lawyers Syndicate,said that he had filed the complaint at the time of the Ettehadeya presidential palace clashes that led to the deaths of several people.He also said it was a dark time when Egyptian blood was being shed,and suggested that everything that has happened may be part of a conspiracy against the country.PTI

Singapore Man Latest To Be Caught Trying To Bring Precious Metal Into Country

Chennai: Customs officials at Chennai airport on Monday arrested a 52-year-old man after he arrived on a flight from Singapore and seized 400 grams of gold that he was attempting to smuggle into the country.
Rafeeq Mohammed,a Singapore national of Indian origin,had concealed the gold in his undergarments,a customs official said.He was the 14person to be arrested at Chennai airport in December for trying to smuggle gold into the country.
Mohammed claimed that he was carrying the gold on behalf of a friend in Singapore, the official said.Mohammed told the customs that he was originally from Karaikal,the Puducherry enclave.
There has been a surge in cases of smuggling of precious metals and stones into the country through Chennai in the past year,with customs officials finding roughly hewn bars of gold or jewels stashed away in hand baggage,stiched into jackets,shoes or undergarments or hidden in secret compartments beneath suitcases.
Many smugglers are finding more ingenious ways to conceal gold while smuggling it to Chennai and some are clearly getting more desperate as in the case of Zuraiya Mumtaz,a 55-year-old Sri Lankan national,who was arrested at Chennai airport on November 1 with 700 grams of gold biscuits hidden in her wig.
Chennai airport customs registered 14 cases of gold smuggling in December,30 from January to October and more than 50 through the calendar year.Between April 2011 and April 2012,airport customs registered 63 cases of gold smuggling,up from 45 cases between April 2010 and April 2011.
There is usually a spurt in instances of smuggling in the last few months of the year,when many expatriates return to the country on leave,customs officials say.Big smuggling networks in Sri Lanka,Malaysia and Singapore recruit blue collar workers to bring gold into the country, another customs official said.
Customs officials have not been able to identify the kingpins of the racket as they hire carriers through agents.In most cases,we could not even get a valid cellphone number.The racket is well organised, the official said.
With gold prices soaring to an all-time high,evading payment of duty can be very lucrative for smuggling networks,he said.The duty on import of gold in large quantities is currently 526 per gram and 250 per gram for smaller quantities.The cost of gold in Sri Lanka and Malaysia is lower than in India by up to 1,500/10 gram.

இராக்கைச் சேர்ந்த சியா மதத் தலைவரான அயோதுல்லா அக்மத் அல் ஹசனி அல் பக்தாதி என்ற மதத்தலைவர் எகிப்தைச் சேர்ந்த தொலைக்காட்சி ஒன்றுக்கு திசம்பர் 13 -ஆம் தேதி பேட்டியளித்தார். அப்போது அவர் இராக்கிய கிறித்தவர்கள் பல் கடவுள் வணங்கிகள் எனவும், யூதர்களின் தோழர்கள் எனவும் அவர்கள் ஒன்று இஸ்லாமைத் தேர்ந்தெடுக்க வேண்டும், அல்லது மரணத்தைத் தழுவ வேண்டும் எனவும், அவர்களின் பெண்களை முஸ்லிம்கள் மனைவியாக்கிக் கொள்ள வேண்டும் எனவும் கூறினார்.

அத்தோடு இராக்கிய கிறிஸ்தவ பெண்களைக் கடத்தி வன்புணர வேண்டும் எனவும், அவர்கள் மணமானவர்களாக இருந்தாலும் பரவாயில்லை எனவும் அதனை இஸ்லாம் அனுமதிக்கின்றது (Qur'an 4:24) எனவும் கூறினார்.

அமெரிக்கா இராக்கியின் மீது போர்த் தெடுத்த பின்னர் இராக்கிய கிறிஸ்தவர்கள் இஸ்லாமிய அடிப்படைவாதிகளால் கடத்தப்பட்டு துன்புறுத்தப்பட்டு, படுகொலை செய்யப்பட்டும் வருகின்றனர். 1990-களில் சுமார் 15 லட்சம் என இருந்த கிறிஸ்தவர்கள் தற்சமயம் வெறும் 400, 000 பேர் மாத்திரமே எஞ்சியுள்ளனர். பல கிறிஸ்தவர்கள் ஐரோப்பிய நாடுகளுக்கு தஞ்சம் புகுந்துவிட்டார்கள். சிலரோ இராக்கிய குர்திஸ்தான் பகுதிகளில் அடைக்கலம் புகுந்துவிட்டார்கள்.

இந்த நிலையில் எகிப்தில் மிதவாதிகளின் பலத்த எதிர்ப்பையும் மீறி மதம் சார்ந்த சட்ட சாசனத்தை நிறைவேற்றப்பட்டுள்ளது. வெகு விரைவில் எகிப்தில் வாழும் கோடிக் கணக்கான கிறிஸ்தவர்கள், நாத்திகர்கள். இடது சாரிகள் மற்றும் முற்போக்கு இஸ்லாமியர்கள் ஓரங்கட்டப் படவும், நாட்டை விட்டு விரட்டப்படவும் வாய்ப்புள்ளது.

இந்த நிலையில் கத்தோலிக்க மதத் தலைவரான போப் பெனிடிக்ட் ஜோசப் ரட்சிங்கர்தனது ட்விட்டர் மூலமாக வன்மங்களைப் பரப்பி வருகின்றார். அவர் சமபாலினத்தவர்கள் மணப்பது உலக சமாதானத்தைக் கெடுத்துவிடும் ( இப்போது மட்டும் உலகம் அப்படியே அமைதிப் பூங்காவாக இருப்பது போல ) எனவும், நாத்திகர்கள் மனிதர்களின் தன்மானத்தை மறுப்பவர்கள் எனவும் நஞ்சைக் கக்கியுள்ளார்.

மதங்கள் கொடுமையானது என்பதையும், மக்களின் மனதை நஞ்சுண்டாக்கி வஞ்சம் தீர்க்கவல்லது என்பதையும் இவ்வாறான சம்பவங்கள் நிரூபிக்கின்றன. மதங்களை வெறுப்போம், அடிப்படைவாதங்களை ஒழிப்போம், மனிதத்தை நேசிப்போமாக.

நாம் மத்வாதிகளை அலட்சியம் செய்யவே விரும்புகிறோம் என்றாலும், அவர்களின் அதிகாரம் கைப்பற்றும் முயற்சியின் காரணியான மத பரப்புரைகளில் அதீத ஒழுக்கம் என கூக்குரல் இடுகிறார்.மதம் ஒழுங்காக பின்பற்றாத்வன் மோசமானவன் என்னும் பரப்புரை முதல் பகுதி ஆகும்.

அப்படி மோசமானவர்கள் மேல் நிகழ்தப் படும் எந்த வன்முறையையும் நியாயப்படுத்துவது அடுத்த பகுதி ஆகும்.

ஆனால் அதீத ஒழுக்கம் எனக் காட்டப்படும் மத புத்த்கம் எழுதப்பட்ட காலத்தில் ஒழுக்க கோட்பாடுகளைக் கொண்டு இருப்பதால், பல இக்கால கண்ணோட்டத்தில் கேவலமாக் தெரிவதும் உண்மையே.

Deoband bans hi-tech phones on its campus

Lucknow: In a move to ward off corrupting influence on young students,Asias largest Islamic seminary,the orthodox Darul Uloom Deoband,on Monday banned the use of multimedia mobile phones on its campus.Institute authorities seized 14 handsets with internet access and cameras on Sunday night from students and destroyed them.
Darul Uloom deputy vice-chancellor Maulana Abdul Khalik said the seminary authorities acted on complaints from unnamed people that the students were misusing multimedia cellphones for morally un-acceptable purposes.He said theres no proscription on simple mobile phones without camera or video features.
Such features (cameras and videos) cause an adverse effect on academics, said Maulana Khalik,adding,Weve cautioned students from whom such cellphones were seized.Next time,strong disciplinary action would be taken against erring students.
A source in Darul Ulooms governing body said the authorities do not have the expertise or mechanism to counter misuse of multi-media phones,and that there was no other way they could have prevented abuse of such phones.
Asked about laptops,a Deoband source said although very few students on the campus own these,any instance of its misuse will be punished.

After toon,French paper mulls comic on Prophet

Paris: A French weekly known for publishing cartoons of the prophet Mohammed to the ire of conservative Muslims said on Sunday that it plans to release a comic book biography of Islams founder that will be researched and educational.
Satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo has on several occasions depicted Islams prophet in an effort to defend free speech.It is a biography authorized by Islam since it was edited by Muslims, said Charlie Hebdos publisher and the comics illustrator,who goes by the name Charb.
I dont think higher Muslim minds could find anything inappropriate, Charb said.
The biography will be published on Wednesday and was put together by a Franco-Tunisian researcher known only as Zineb,Charb said.
The publisher said the idea for the comic book came to him in 2006 when a newspaper in Denmark published cartoons of Mohammed,later republished by Charlie Hebdo,drawing angry protests across the Muslim world.
Meanwhile,a senior Turkish government official,Ibrahim Kalin,lashed out at Charlie Hebdos plans to release the comic book,calling it a provocation and advising Muslims to ignore it.
Charlie Hebdos editor says the cartoons wont be offensive to Muslims.Turning the Prophet of Islam into a cartoon character is itself wrong, Kalin said in a message on Twitter.No matter what Charlie Hebdo people say,this is a provocation.AFP

Qaida carves out its own country in Mali

Mopti (Mali): Deep inside caves,in remote desert bases,in the escarpments and cliff faces of northern Mali,Islamic fighters are burrowing into the earth,erecting formidable defences to protect what has essentially become al-Qaidas new country.
They have used the bulldozers,earth movers and Caterpillar machines left behind by fleeing construction crews to dig what residents and local officials describe as an elaborate network of tunnels,trenches,shafts and ramparts.In just one case,inside a cave large enough to drive trucks into,they have stored up to 100 drums of gasoline,guaranteeing their fuel supply in the face of a foreign intervention,say experts.
Northern Mali is now the biggest territory held by al-Qaida and its allies.And as the world hesitates,delaying a military intervention,the extremists who seized control of the area earlier this year are preparing for a war they boast will be worse than the decadeold struggle in Afghanistan.
Al-Qaida never owned Afghanistan, said former UN diplomat Robert Fowler,who was held for 130 days by al-Qaidas local chapter,whose fighters now control the main cities in the north.They do own northern Mali.
The terror syndicate,whose African branch had only a shadowy presence in Mali,has in recent months taken advantage of political instability in the country to push out of their hiding place and into the towns,taking over an enormous territory.The catalyst was a military coup nine months ago that transformed Mali from a once-stable nation to the failed state it is today.
On March 21,disgruntled soldiers invaded the presidential palace.The fall of the nations democratically elected government at the hands of junior officers destroyed the militarys command-and-control structure.The soldiers abandoned everything north of Mopti to the advancing rebels,handing them an area that stretches over more than 620,000 square kilometres,a territory larger than Texas or France and almost exactly the size of Afghanistan.
Turbaned fighters now control all the major towns in the north,carrying out amputations in public squares like the Taliban did.Just as in Afghanistan,they are flogging women for not covering up.Since taking control of Timbuktu,they have destroyed seven of the 16 mausoleums listed as world heritage sites.
Analysts say due to the size and the hostile nature of the terrain controlled by the Islamists,rooting them out could prove even more difficult than it did in Afghanistan.AP
