இந்த வாரம் இலங்கை மக்களை மட்டுமல்ல உலகில் பலரையும் உலுக்கிய செய்தியாக இலங்கையை சேர்ந்த ஆரியவதியின் கதை அமைந்திருக்கிறது.

இயேசுநாதர் சிலுவையில் ஆணி அறையப்பட்டு கொல்லப்பட்டதை நாம் அறிந்திருக்கிறோம். உயிருடன் உள்ள பெண்ணை அதுவும் மனிதவுலகம் நாகரிகமடைந்தாக கூறப்படும் இந்த காலத்தில் ஒரு பெண் சுத்தியால் ஆணிகள் அடிக்கப்பட்டு சித்திரவதைசெய்யப்பட்டுள்ளார்.

உடலில் எட்டு ஆணிகள் உள்ளே ஏற்றப்பட்ட நிலையில் சவுதியில் இருந்து திரும்பியிருக்கிறார் ஆரியவதி என்கிற பெண்.

தனது வாழ்நாளுக்குள் தனது 3 பிள்ளைகளுடன் சந்தோசமாக வாழ சொந்தமாக ஒரு சிறு குடிசையை அமைத்துக்கொள்வதற்காக பிழைப்பு தேடி பணிப்பெண் வேலைக்காக சவுதி சென்றவர் ஆரியவதி (வயது 49).

இவர் இலங்கையின் தெற்குப் பகுதியில் உடதெனிய எனும் இடத்தை பிறப்பிடமாகக் கொண்டவர். வெளிநாட்டு வேலைவாய்ப்பு தரகர் ஒருவர் இலவசமாக அனுப்புகிறார் என்று கேள்வியுற்று அரசாங்கத்தின் வேலைவாய்ப்பு பணியகத்தின் 15 நாள் பயிற்சியை மேற்கொண்டார். அதன் பின்னர் கடந்த மார்ச் மாதம் 25ஆம் திகதி சவுதி புறப்பட்டார்.

சவுதியில் ரியாத் நகரத்தில் இறங்கியதும் அவரை இருவர் காரொன்றில் அன்பாக வேலைக்காக அழைத்துச் சென்றனர். அந்த வீட்டின் உரிமையாளர் அவரது மனைவி மற்றும் 5 பிள்ளைகளுக்கும் பணிவிடைகள் செய்வதும் வீட்டை சுத்தமாக பராமரிப்பதும் அவருக்கு வழங்கப்பட்ட பிரதான வேலைகள். இதனைத் தவிர உடுதுணி துவைத்தல், அவற்றை ஸ்திரிசெய்து மடித்து வைத்தல், வாகனங்களை கழுவுதல் போன்ற வேலைகளும் அவருக்கு ஒதுக்கப்பட்டன.

ஒரே வாரத்தில் அந்த வீட்டினர் தமது சுயரூபத்தைக் காட்டத் தொடங்கினர். சிறு சிறு தற்செயல் பிழைகளுக்காக அவரை கட்டையைக் கொண்டு தாக்கியுள்ளனர்.

தற்செயலாக ஒரு கிளாஸ்’ கைதவறி விழுந்து உடைந்த சம்பவத்திலிருந்தே இந்த வன்முறைகள் தொடங்கின.

உரிமையாளரின் மனைவி (எஜமானி அம்மா) ஆரியவதியின் கைகளை இறுக்கிப் பிடித்திருக்க கணவர் சூடாக்கிய ஆணிகளை உடலில் சுத்தியலால் அடித்திருக்கிறார். அதே நாள் இரண்டரை இஞ்ச் உயர ஆணிகள் ஐந்து இவ்வாறு ஆரியவதியின் உடலில் ஏற்றப்பட்டுள்ளன.

அன்றைய தினம் ஆரியவதியின் ஓவென்ற அவலக்குரல் எவர் காதுகளிலும் விழவுமில்லை. அந்த வீட்டில் ஆரியவதியின் அன்புப் பணிவிடைகளை அதுவரை பெற்றுக்கொண்ட அந்த வீட்டின் பிள்ளைகள் கூட காப்பாற்ற முன்வரவில்லை.

தொடர்ந்து கத்தினால் கழுத்தை வெட்டி எறிவோம் என்று மிரட்டப்பட்டுள்ளார். தனது அன்புக்குரிய பிள்ளைகளின் எதிர்காலத்துக்காக ஆணிகள் ஏற்றப்பட்ட உடலுடன் தொடர்ந்தும் அங்கு பணிபுரிந்துள்ளார்.

ஆரியவதி தாய்மண்ணுக்கு திரும்பியதும் அவர் கண்களில் நீர்பெருக பகிர்ந்துகொண்ட விபரங்கள் அனைவரது நெஞ்சையும் உலுக்கச் செய்யும் கதைகள்.

“ஒரு தடவை கோப்பை நழுவி விழுந்தது. இன்று தொலைந்தேன்.. என்று பதறிக்கெணடிருக்கையில் வீட்டு எஜமானி அம்மா “உன் கண்கள் என்ன குருடா.. இரு… குருடாக்கி விடுகிறேன் என்று கூறிக்கொண்டு ஆணியை எடுத்து கண்களில் சொருகுவதற்காக கிட்ட கொண்டு வந்தார். என் கண்களை இறுக மூடிக்கொண்டு இருந்தேன். எவ்வளவோ கதறியும் அந்த ஆணிகளை எனது புருவ இமைகளின் மேல் பகுதியில் இறுக்கிச் சொருகினார்…. “ என்று இன்னமும் நீக்கப்படாத நிலையில் உள்ள அந்த ஆணி சொருகப்பட்ட இடத்தைக் காண்பித்தார் ஆரியவதி..

அவரது கால் பாதங்களுக்குள் இரு ஆணிகளை ஏற்றியுள்ளனர். இவ்வாறு சிறுசிறு பிழைகளுக்கெல்லாம் உடலின் ஏதாவது ஒருபகுதியில் ஆணியை செருகினார்கள். வெளியில் இழுக்கக்கூடிய ஆணிகளை இழுத்துவிட்டேன். அகற்ற கடினமானவற்றை அப்படியே விட்டுவிட்டேன். காய்ச்சல் ஏற்ப்பட்டபோது என்னை சிகிச்சையளிக்க அனுமதிக்கவில்லை. இலங்கைக்கு திருப்பி அனுப்பிவிடுங்கள் என்று மன்றாடியபோது, அவர்கள் கிடைத்ததைக் கொண்டு என்னைத் தாக்கினர்.

இறுதியில் எனது உடலில் ஆணிகள் உள்ள பகுதிகளில் இருந்து புண் முற்றி சீழ் வடிய ஆரம்பித்தது. இருக்கின்ற உடு துணிகளைக் கொண்டு சுத்தப்படுத்தி கட்டு போட்டுக்கொண்டே இருந்தேன். கடந்த மாதம் அவர்கள் என்னைப் பார்த்து அசிங்கப்பட்டனர். ஆணி உள்ள இடங்களில் வேதனை அதிகமாகிக் கொண்டிருந்தது. மீண்டும் சித்திரவதை செய்வார்கள் என்று பயந்து வேலைகளை செய்து வந்தேன்…" எனறார்.

இதற்கிடையில் தொடர்பு இல்லாத நிலையில் ஆரியவதியின் குடும்பத்தினர் பீதியடைந்த நிலையில் வெளிநாட்டு வேலைவாய்ப்பு பணியகத்தில் முறைப்பாடு செய்துள்ளனர். அதனைத் தொடர்ந்து ஆரியவதியுடன் தொலைபேசி தொடர்பு ஏற்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. ஆரியவதியால் சுதந்திரமாக விபரமாக நிலைமைகளை எடுத்துரைக்க முடியவில்லை. “…எனக்கு இங்கு பிரச்சினை என்னை உடனடியாக இலங்கை திரும்ப ஏற்பாடு செய்யுங்கள்..” எனக்கூறி வைத்துவிட்டார்.

அதனைத் தொடர்ந்து ஆரியவதியின் கணவர் மீண்டும் இலங்கை வேலைவாய்ப்புப் பணியகத்தில் முறைப்பாடு செய்ததைத் தொடர்ந்து அவர் திருப்பி அழைக்கப்பட்டார். இது குறித்து ஆரியவதி தெரிவிக்கையில்

"..கடந்த 20ஆம் திகதி வீட்டு எஜமானி அம்மா ஒரு பையைக் கொண்டுவந்து தந்து ஒரு காரில் என்னை ஏற்றிக்கொண்டுவந்து விமான நிலையத்தில் ஏஜென்சியிடம் ஒப்படைத்தார். அந்த ஏஜென்சி, நாடு திரும்புவதற்கு டிக்கெட் செலவுக்காக 3 மாத சம்பளத்தை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு எஞ்சிய இரு மாத சம்பளத்தை என் கைகளில் வைத்தார். ஏன் நடப்பதற்கு கஸ்டப்படுகிறாய் என்று அவர் என்னிடம் கேடடார். காலில் வருத்தமுள்ளது என்று மட்டும் கூறினேன். இருந்த பண்த்தில் எனது கணவருடன் தொலைபேசியில் தொடர்புகொண்டு நான் நாடு திரும்புவதை அறிவித்தேன். 21ஆம் திகதி கட்டுநாயக்க விமான நிலையத்தில் என்னை அழைத்துச் செல்ல எனது கணவர் வந்திருந்தார்." என்றார்.

கட்டுநாயக்க விமான நிலையத்தில் அவர் நடந்து வந்த விதத்தை வைத்து ஒரு துன்புறுத்தப்பட்ட நிலையில் திரும்புகிற ஒரு பெண் என்பதை யாரும் புரிந்து கொள்வர். அது குறித்து விமான நிலைய அதிகாரிகள் பலர் ஆரியவதியிடம் விசாரித்த போதும், தனக்கு காலில் நோ உள்ளதாக மட்டுமே கூறியுள்ளார். தனத பாதங்களில் ஆணிகள் ஏற்றப்பட்டுள்ளன என்கிற உண்மையை வெளிப்படையாக பகிர்ந்துகொள்ளும் மனநிலையில் அவர் இருக்கவில்லை. ஒரு அதிகாரி 700 ரூபாவை வைத்தியச் செலவுக்காக பெற்றுக்கொடுத்துள்ளார்.

நான் நாடு திரும்பிய மகழ்ச்சி எனக்கு போதும். உடலில் உள்ள வலிகூட தெரியவில்லை. உண்மையை எங்காவது சொன்னால் என்னை பிடித்து வைத்துக்கொள்வார்களோ என்ற பயத்தில் நான் எங்கும் உண்மை கூறவில்லை..” என்று அப்பாவித்தனமாக பின்னர் அவர் ஊடகங்களுக்கு கூறினார். விமான நிலையங்களின் உலோகங்களைக் கண்டுபிடிக்கும் கருவிகள் எதுவுமே இவரது உடலின் ஆணிகளைக் கண்டு பிடிக்காதது பலருக்கும் வியப்பைத் தந்திருக்கிறது.

வீட்டுக்கு அழைத்து வரப்பட்ட நிலையில் கூட அவர் கணவருக்கோ பிள்ளைகளுக்கோ தான் பட்ட வேதனைகளை அவர் கூறவில்லை. சிறு ஊசியொன்று ஏறியிருப்பதால் தனக்கு கால் வலிப்பதாகக் கூறியியிருக்கிறார். அவரது 25 மகன் சமில் பிரியதர்சன தனது தாயை அழைத்துக்கொண்டு கும்புறுபிட்டி நகர வைத்தியசாலைக்கு அழைத்துச் சென்ற போதுதான் முதற்தடவையாக வைத்தியரிடம் உண்மைகளைக் கூறியிருக்கிறார்.

வைத்தியர் நிமல் ஜயசிங்க உடனடியாகவே அவருக்கு ஏற்பு ஊசி ஏற்றியிருக்கிறார். பின்னர் அவரது உடலை முழுவதும் எக்ஸ்ரே எடுத்து மேலதிக அறிக்கைகளை சிரேஸ்ட வைத்தியர் ஒருவர் சமர்ப்பித்துள்ளார். அந்த அறிக்கை அங்குள்ள எல்லோரையும் திடுக்கிடச் செய்துள்ளது. மொத்தம் 23 ஆணிகள் உடல் முழுவதும் ஆங்காங்கு இருப்பது கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

இது போன்றதொரு சம்பவம் இதற்கு முதல் இடம்பெற்றதில்லை என ஆஸ்பத்திரிக்கு விஜயம் செய்த வேலைவாய்ப்பு பணியகத்தின் அதிகாரி தெரிவித்தார். இது பற்றிய மேலதிக விசாரணைகளை மேற்கொண்டு வருவதாகவும், ஆரியவதிக்கு நியாயம் கிடைக்கச் செய்ய அனைத்தையும் மேறகொள்வதாகவும் அவர் தெரிவித்தார்.

தனது குடிசையை சரிசெய்து குடும்பத்துடன் ஒன்றாக சந்தோசமாக வாழவென புறப்பட்டுச் சென்று 5 மாதங்களின் பின் தனது கிராமத்துக்குத் திரும்பியபோது ஆரியவதிக்கு எஞ்சியிருந்தது ஐந்து மாதங்களுக்கு முன்னர் இருந்த குடிசையும் கடும் மழையினால் உடைந்து உருக்குலைந்து இருந்தது. ஆணிகள் ஏற்றப்பட்ட போது கிடைத்த வலியை விட அது வேதனைமிக்கது என அவர் கண்ணீர்மல்க பலர் முன்னிலையில் தேம்பினார்.

27அன்று நடந்த ஒப்பரேசனில் 5 ஆணிகளை நீக்க முடியவில்லை.

ஆரியவதியின் உயிருக்கு ஆபத்து விளைவிக்கக்கூடிய அந்த 23 ஆணிகளில் முக்கிய 18 ஆணிகளை இன்று (ஓகஸ்ட் 27) நீக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. ஏழு சிரேஸ்ட வைத்தியர்கள் உள்ளிட்ட 15 பேரைக் கொண்ட குழு இரண்டரை மணித்தியாலங்களாக செய்த ஓப்பரேசனில் 13 இடங்களை வெட்டி ஆணிகளை நீக்கியுள்ளனர். எஞ்சிய 5இல் குண்டு ஊசிகளும் உண்டு என்றும் அவற்றை நீக்குவது ஆபத்து மிகுந்ததென்றும். அவற்றை நீக்கும் போது நரம்புகளுக்கு பாதிப்பை கொண்டுவரக்கூடும் என்றும். அதை விட அவற்றை நீக்காமல் விடுவது பாதுகாப்பானது எனது வைத்தியர்கள் அறிவித்துள்ளனர்.

நீக்கப்பட்ட ஆணிகள்

கண் இமை நெற்றிக்கருகில் – 1 கம்பி
வலது கையில் – 5 ஆணிகள், 1 கம்பி
இடது கையில் – 3 ஆணிகள், 2 கம்பிகள்
வலது காலில் – 4 ஆணிகள்
இடது காலில் – 2 ஆணிகள்

ஆகக் கூடிய நீளமுள்ள ஆணி 6.6 சென்றிமீற்றர் கொண்டது என வைத்தியர்கள் அறிவித்தனர்.

குறிப்பு

மத்தியகிழக்கு நாடுகளுக்கு வேலைக்காக சென்றவர்களின் சராசரி 20 சடலங்கள் மாதாந்தம் இலங்கை கொண்டுவரப்படுகின்றன. இயற்கை மரணங்கள், ஏனைய விபத்துக்களினால் மரணித்தவர்கள் அதில் அடக்கம்.

வெளிநாடுகளில் நாடுகளில் 1.8 மில்லியன் இலங்கையர்கள் பணிபுரிகின்றனர்.

இவர்களில் 70 வீதத்தினர் பெண்களாவர்.

சவுதியில் மட்டும் 5.5 மில்லியன் வெளிநாட்டவர்கள் பணிபுரிகின்றனர்.

இதில் 4 லட்சம் பேர் இலங்கையர்கள்.

இலங்கையின் சனத்தொகையில் 10 வீதத்தினர் இவ்வாறு வெளிநாடுகளில் பணிபுரிந்து வருகின்றனர்.

மாதாந்தம் 18 ஆயிரம் பெண்கள் மத்தியகிழக்கிற்கு வேலைக்காக பயணிக்கின்றனர்.

இலங்கையின் மொத்த தேசிய வருமானத்தை ஈட்டித் தருவதில் வெளிநாட்டு பணிப்பெண்கள் முக்கிய இடத்தில் உள்ளனர்.

குடவாசல்அருகே கோஷ்டி மோதலில் ஜமாத் தலைவர் உள்பட இருவர் சுட்டுக் கொலை

திருவாரூர், செப். 6: திருவாரூர் மாவட்டம், குடவாசல் அருகே கோஷ்டி மோதலில், ஜமாத் தலைவர் உள்ளிட்ட 2 பேர் ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை இரவு சுட்டுக் கொல்லப்பட்டனர். மேலும் 4 பேர் காயமடைந்தனர்.
குடவாசல் அருகேயுள்ளது திருவிடைச்சேரி கிராமம். இங்கு 300 இஸ்லாமிய குடும்பங்கள் வசித்து வருகின்றன. ரமலான் நோன்பு காலம் என்பதால் அங்குள்ள பள்ளிவாசலில் அனைவரும் தொழுகை மேற்கொண்டு வருகின்றனர்.
அதே ஊரைச் சேர்ந்த தவ்ஹீத் ஜமாத் அமைப்பைச் சேர்ந்த அ. குத்புதீன், தனது ஆதரவாளர்களுடன் ஒரு வீட்டில் தனியாக தொழுகைகளை நடத்தி வருகிறாராம்.
இதுகுறித்து ஜமாத் தலைவர் முகமது இஸ்மாயில் மற்றும் ஜமாத்தார்கள் குத்புதீனை அழைத்து விசாரித்து, அனைவரும் பள்ளிவாசலில்தான் தொழுகை நடத்த வேண்டும் என ஹள்வலியுறுத்தியுள்ளனர். இது தொடர்பாக இருதரப்புக்கும் இடையே லேசான உரசல் இருந்துள்ளது.
இந் நிலையில், குத்புதீனுக்கு ஆதரவாக அவரது மைத்துனர் தஞ்சாவூர் மாவட்டம், திருமங்கலக்குடியைச் சேர்ந்த ஹாஜி முகமது தலைமையில் 20-க்கும் மேற்பட்டோர் 3 கார்களில் ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை இரவு பள்ளிவாசல் அருகே வந்தனர்.
அப்போது, தொழுகை முடிந்து பள்ளிவாசலுக்கு வெளியே பேசிக் கொண்டிருந்த ஜமாத் தலைவர் முகமது இஸ்மாயிலை, குத்புதீன் ஆதரவாளர்களில் ஒருவர் கையால் தாக்கினராம். அவர் கூச்சல் போட்டவுடன், அங்கிருந்தவர்கள் கூடியுள்ளனர்.
அப்போது ஒரு நபர் கைத்துப்பாக்கியால் ஜமாத் தலைவர் முகமது இஸ்மாயில் (55), ஹக்கீம் முகமது (50) ஆகியோரை துப்பாக்கியால் சுட்டார். இதில், இருவரும் அதே இடத்தில் உயிரிழந்தனர். விழுதியூரைச் சேர்ந்த பால்ராஜ் (60), இவரது மகன் ராமதாஸ் (30), சந்தியாகு (30), ஹாஜா மைதீன் (35) ஆகிய நால்வரும் குண்டு பாய்ந்து காயமடைந்தனர்.
இதுகுறித்து தகவல் அறிந்ததும், திருவாரூர் எஸ்.பி. மூர்த்தி, தஞ்சாவூர் எஸ்.பி. செந்தில்வேலன் தலைமையிலான போலீஸôர் திருவிடைச்சேரி சென்று, விசாரணை மேற்கொண்டனர்.
இதுதொடர்பாக 20-க்கும் மேற்பட்டோர் மீது வழக்குப் பதிவு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது. துப்பாக்கியால் சுட்டதாகக் கூறப்படும் ஹாஜி முகமது என்பவரை போலீஸôர் தீவிரமாகத் தேடி வருகின்றனர்.
சிதம்பரம் நீதிமன்றத்தில் ஒருவர் சரண்
சிதம்பரம்: துப்பாக்கியால் சுட்டு இருவர் இறந்த சம்பவத்தில், துப்பாக்கியால் சுட்ட முக்கிய குற்றவாளியான ஆடுதுறை திருமங்கலக்குடி குறிச்சிமலையைச் சேர்ந்த ஹஜ்முகமது (50) மற்றும் அவரது ஆதரவாளர்களை குடவாசல் போலீஸôர் தேடி வந்தனர். இந்நிலையில் ஹஜ்முகமது சிதம்பரம் எண்-2 குற்றவியல் நீதிமன்றத்தில் திங்கள்கிழமை நீதிபதி ஈஸ்வரமூர்த்தி முன்னிலையில் சரணடைந்தார்.
÷ஹஜ்முகமதுவை செப்டம்பர் 13-ம் தேதி வரை நீதிமன்றக்காவலில் வைக்க நீதிபதி உத்தரவிட்டதை அடுத்து அவர் கடலூர் மத்திய சிறையில் அடைக்கப்பட்டார

Wakf Deconstructed

‘To tie down’ is the literal meaning of
the Arabic word Wakf. It’s used across the Muslim world to denote
property donated by individuals and institutions in the name of Allah
for the benefit of the poor in the community.
800 years is how old the institution of Wakf is in India. It began when Muslim rulers donated huge lands for charity.
3,00,000 is the approximate number of registered Wakf properties in India
4 lakh acresis the land Wakf properties account for. According to the deputy
chairman of the Rajya Sabha, K. Rahman Khan, this makes the board the
third-largest landholder after the railways and defence.
35 is the number of Wakf boards in India, many of them non-functional
5 is the minimum number of members a board must have. The number,
however, varies according to the Muslim population of a state. Members
are nominated by ruling parties in each state.

Allegations against the board

Although Wakf is a national resource to be used to
develop institutions and earn income for Muslims, it is so terribly
managed that it is the only system where virtually no accountability is
demanded
Cases of blatant corruption abound. Land is sold
off for buildings, hotels, malls or factories for a pittance or given
out for shockingly low rents to commercial interests.
The boards have become an avenue for political patronage. Muslims who
cannot be accommodated in ministries are sent off here. They mostly
never do anything for the community. In most cases, they are
hand-in-glove with the land mafia and encroachers.
The “Islam in danger” sentiment is crudely raised to hoodwink the Muslim
public and stop any real scrutiny of the functioning of boards, whose
members are out to make a fast buck
Ironically, Wakf boards keep claiming properties protected by the ASI as “living”
religious shrines. In many cases, there is a clear monetary incentive
under the guise of religion.
The mess in the boards is
also a reflection of the apathy of state governments. Many have not
constituted boards; none have carried out a survey of Wakf properties
as required by the 1995 Act.
As a result of this mess, 70
per cent of Wakf properties are encroached upon, often in connivance
with board members or government department overseeing.

Allow encroachments

The board covertly encourages Muslims to encroach on a
monument. Friday prayers begin to be held on a regular basis. Wakf
board then attempts to make it a ‘living’ place of worship. Very often,
the encroachers are board members or persons acting on their behalf.
Later surrounding land is sold/ leased as private property for commercial purposes.

It is collectively the biggest
land scam in India’s history. Wakf can be described as a religious
endowment made in the name of Allah for the benefit of the poor and
needy in the Muslim community. There are approximately 3,00,000
registered Wakf properties in India on about four lakh acres of land.
It is a national resource that should have been developed for the
welfare of the community, as it is meant to.

Instead, this resource has been mortgaged, sold and encroached upon
with the connivance of the very institutions and individuals
responsible for safeguarding it. This is an investigation into a
systemic rot. The Wakf boards in most states of India are repositories
of corruption, in league with land sharks and builders. They continue
to get away with the daylight robbery of their own community because,
whenever there is any demand for scrutiny, they crudely take cover
behind the “Islam in danger” sentiment.

Rahman
Khan, deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha, was chairman of the joint
parliamentary committee on Wakf that submitted its report a year ago.
Having examined the issue in depth, he says: “If the Wakf properties
were managed properly, many problems of Muslims such as joblessness,
lack of education and resultant poverty would have been resolved.
Today, even if we presume that 70 per cent of these properties have
been encroached upon or sold off, even the remaining 30 per cent is a
huge resource that can be developed.” He has already recommended to the
Manmohan Singh government that there be a “total change” in the
constitution of the boards and a national Wakf development corporation
be set up with professionals at the helm. “Imagine what great
institutions can be built as the land cost is zero,” he says.

one instance, the board got a property with Punjab National Bank
vacated and then leased it to a society headed by one of its own
members. Shops too have been given out on lease.

But that is some distance away and will happen only if public
awareness about the scale of the problem is created. Currently, those
who purport to be leaders of the community are complicit in the
conspiracy to rob resources while perpetuating a siege mentality. They
want to capture existing institutions and sell them off piece by piece.
They are adept at fanning fears and feeding into the victimhood
syndrome but quite incapable of building institutions or shepherding
the community towards modernity. Atyab Siddiqui, advocate and standing
counsel of the Jamia Millia Islamia university, says that “anytime we
talk of reforming Wakf, they bring religion into it”. According to him,
the 1995 Wakf Act actually increased corruption within the boards.
Earlier, any sale or exchange of land had to be cleared by a district
judge. “But now,” he says, “the board can pretty much do what it likes,
and shocking decisions are taken all the time.”

Some examples of suspect land deals from across the land:

Chennai: In 1997, the Tamil Nadu Wakf
Board took the decision to outright sell 1,710 square feet of land in
the commercialised Triplicane High street in Madras for a paltry Rs 3
lakh. A sale like this would have required the sanction of two-thirds
of the board members.
Mumbai: The
Maharashtra Wakf Board got a measly Rs 16 lakh for 4,532 square metres
in the upscale Altamount Road on which none other than Mukesh Ambani is
building his plush 27-storey home.
Bangalore:
Developed on about five acres of land, the Windsor Manor hotel here was
till recently giving the board a rent of Rs 12,000 a month for a
property worth Rs 500 crore.
Faridabad:
The Wakf board has been giving out about five acres of land on 11-month
leases for several years at a ridiculously low rent between Rs 500 and
Rs 1,500 per month. A factory was built and land use altered.

When Outlook approached Salman Khursheed, the Union
minister for minority affairs, he admitted that “Wakf is one of those
areas in which accountability has not been demanded. The community
itself has not demanded accountability possibly due to a level of
ignorance”. Can things change? Khursheed says he has proposed changes
in the existing laws. “Once there was no accountability in the
management of Haj. Now questions are asked all the time,” he points
out. “Although the Wakf situation looks impossible, things do and can
change once awareness builds up.”

month for a property worth Rs 500 crore

The heart of the problem lies in the constitution of the boards. A
senior bureaucrat familiar with the issue says bluntly: “The boards are
ill-constituted, not constituted or politically constituted. Often,
they’re nothing more than a gang of thieves.” Mostly, political
hangers-on and operators from the minority community are sent off to
man the boards. The policies of successive governments have created a
class of “sarkari Musalmans” adept at capturing institutions and
bagging positions through which they can patronise others down the
pecking order. The incentive they have, besides authority, is to pilfer
as much as they can get away with.

There
are enough examples of how a small group of “insiders” at Muslim
institutions benefit from the overall laxity in the boards. For
instance, there is the case of a member of the Delhi minorities
commission running a private school on a large tract of Wakf land in
the expensive Nizamuddin area and paying the board a pittance of Rs
1,000 rent per month. Mohammad Arif, section officer in charge of
properties in the Delhi Wakf office, admits reluctantly that there are
“some schools running on Wakf land but they are not for the poor and
charge fees”. Further digging reveals that, two decades ago, Delhi Wakf
ran a charitable dispensary but it was shut down. Now the main service
they provide is paying salaries of imams attached to masjids (see On a Wink and a Prayer).

There are two revealing cases linked to the huge Fatehpuri mosque in Delhi. According to some documents accessed by Outlook,
what was listed as “Wakf estate number 6540 in masjid Fatehpuri” was
occupied by a branch of the Punjab National Bank. The board fought a
case and got the property vacated. Subsequently, however, it leased the
property to a society headed by one of its own members, a Maulana
Moazzam Ahmad. A blatant case of insider trading? Three years ago, a
lawyer representing a school running inside the Fatehpuri mosque tried
to get a shop at the entrance removed. The Wakf board claimed that the
documents relevant for that plot of land were missing—it was widely
suspected that the shopkeeper was paying off members. Salman Khursheed
also pleads helplessness. “What do we do when the boards let their own
properties be encroached upon and then say the documents are missing
and they have lost the title deeds?”

That is, in fact, the most common tactic used when the boards are in
league with encroachers. RS deputy chairman Rahman Khan says that there
is no doubt that almost 70 to 80 per cent of Wakf land is encroached
upon. Often, it is the government that simply takes over the land. But
all too often Muslims themselves are the encroachers who pay off board
members to live inside mosques and shrines or run shops and businesses
on the premises. “Corruption in the boards is rampant,” says Rahman
Khan, “and this is made worse by the attitude of state governments to
Muslim institutions. They don’t want to interfere in case there is a
reaction and they also don’t care because Muslims are involved.”

Standing counsel for Jamia Millia Islamia Atyab Siddiqui says that
whenever there is an initiative from educated Muslims to preserve a
legacy, build an institution or perhaps even introduce modern
education, there is a run-in with the Wakf board. “We believe the Wakf
does not have the instruments to preserve old mosques and we have been
arguing that the ASI is better positioned to manage properties. But the
problem that enlightened sections of society face is that they run up
against monetary interests of a few who hide behind the guise of
religion.” K.K. Mohammad is a veteran ASI archaeologist who has worked
across India. Now the superintending archaeologist for the Delhi
circle, he says, “My experience shows me that whenever people claim
protected monuments as living shrines, there is a commercial incentive
of occupying the monument or developing the land around it. All
communities have people who do this.”

Most old Wakf properties have caretakers who treat it like a
personal fiefdom, building houses and businesses and destroying the
character of the shrine. Siddiqui has been part of the initiative to
preserve the historic Anglo-Arabic school in Delhi’s Ajmeri gate area.
He says, “The high court ordered the removal of encroachers (about 50
families) from the heritage property. But the same lot of property
dealers, local toughs, interlopers are again trying to move in under
the Wakf umbrella.”

Across
the country, there are examples of the huge Wakf mess. West Bengal has
many cases of properties being encroached upon and made into little
slums. Some examples: 4,000 illegal occupants are in possession of a
property in Calcutta known as the Mysore Family Fateha Fund Wakf
Estate. Over a hundred mosques in Calcutta and Howrah have been
encroached upon. Sixty-four other mosques in the state have been
illegally occupied. The story is somewhat different in Andhra Pradesh,
which has the largest number of Wakf properties registered in the
country. Here the government has simply taken over huge tracts of Wakf
lands. For instance, Hyderabad’s hi-tech city stands on Wakf land.
There is the interesting case of the government taking over 6,000 acres
of land worth Rs 500 crore in Visakhapatnam and allotting 900 acres out
of this to NTPC and 800 acres to the Hindujas at the rate of Rs 2.25
lakh per acre. When the Wakf board contested this, the Supreme Court
ruled in its favour saying that the land was theirs and transferred it
back to them. The government had to then transfer the money to the Wakf
board.

Wakf land now sold to developer: Aurangabad

Clearly, Wakf is a remarkable resource that can be tapped for the
community. In a state like Kerala where people are literate and demand
accountability, the board is manned by professionals and headed by two
advocates, not by racketeers. Bureaucrats in the ministry of minority
affairs in New Delhi cite the work done in Kerala as an example of what
is possible. But that is an exception. The norm is rampant corruption,
in the firm belief that no one will demand accountability.

More than anything else, the terrible state of Wakf properties in
India reflects on the Muslim community’s failure to build institutions.
Compare this with the manner in which the tiny Christian minority has
preserved and built schools, colleges and hospitals. There is a complex
set of reasons for this state of affairs in institutions that purport
to work for the welfare of the country’s largest minority and the
world’s second-largest Muslim population. In the case of Wakf, many
illiterate Muslims just see their placards and presume the land belongs
to them. They are encouraged to believe there is some higher religious
purpose to Wakf, little knowing that it has become a synonym for
daylight robbery. The greatest hypocrisy perhaps is that the men who
violate the spirit of charity behind the concept of Wakf then pretend
to be devout and pious believers

Aurangabad plot not Wakf land: CourtTNN, Sep 10, 2007, 05.06am IST

MUMBAI: In what comes as much-needed respite for CM Vilasrao Deshmukh, an Aurangabad court has held that the controversial plot of land purchased by a trust once headed by his younger brother Dilip, is not a Wakf property.

Wakf property belongs collectively to the Muslim community and cannot be sold except under a special act. R G Wankhade, civil judge, senior division, Aurangabad, said in his seven-page order that it was clear from the facts of the case that the property in question was not the Wakf property.

Located in the heart of Aurangabad and valued at Rs 60 crore, the 11-acre plot was bought by Nirman Bharti Landmark Pvt Ltd, two years ago. Nirman Bharti was headed by Dilip Deshmukh, who subsequently quit the trust. The land deal had rocked both houses of the state legislature during the monsoon session. The attack was spearheaded by the BJP's Nitin Gadkari, who asked for Vilasrao Deshmukh's resignation on the grounds that the deal was illegal.

Even the minister for dairy development, Anis Ahmed, who is Wakf in-charge, had objected to the transaction. Following Ahmed's remarks, the Congress high command sought information from the state on all Wakf land transactions in the state. A high-level parliamentary panel, headed by Telugu Desam MP Laljan Basha, visited Mumbai and Aurangabad to secure information on the implementation of the Wakf Act.

Nirman Bharti's land deal was challenged by a section of Muslim leaders. Their contention was that Nirman Bharti had illegally purchased the property in collusion with others, and that since this was Wakf property, it could only be sold under the provisions of the Wakf Act 1995

கடந்த செப். 5&ம் தேதி ஏற்பட்ட தகராறில் ஜபருல்லா தரப்புக்கு அடி விழுந்தது. அங்கு வந்த ஜமாத் தலைவர் இஸ்மாயில், ஜபருல்லாவை அடித்தவர்களை ரெண்டு தட்டு தட்டி சமாதானம் செய்திருக்கிறார். இந்த விஷயம் தவ்ஹீத் ஜமாத்தைச் சேர்ந்த குத்புதீனுக்குத் தெரியவர, அவர் இஸ்மா-யிலை மூக்கில் குத்தி பதம் பார்த்தார்.தடுக்க வந்த ஜமாத் தலைவர் மகன் சமியுதீனுக்கும் அடி.

இந்நிலையில்தான் குத்புதீனுடைய மைத்துனர் திருமங்கலக்குடியைச் சேர்ந்த ஹஜ் முஹமது, குத்புதீனுக்கு ஆதரவாக களமிறங்கினார். நான்கு கார்களில் அடி-யாட்களோடு ஊருக்கு வந்தவர், ஜமாத் தலைவர் முஹமது இஸ்மாயிலைத் தேடிச் சென்று துப்பாக்கியால் சுட்டு விட்டார். அப்போது அருகில் இருந்த ஹஜ் முஹமதுவும் (இவர் வேறொரு ஹஜ் முகமது) சுடப்பட்டார். கொலை கும்பல் தப்பித்து ஓடும்போது, எதிரில் வந்தவர்களை சுட்டுக்கொண்டே போனார்கள். இதில் பால்ராஜ், அவரது மகன் சந்தியாவு, ஹாஜா மைதீன், ராமதாஸ் போன்றவர்களும் சுடப்பட்டார்கள். இதில், முஹமது இஸ்மாயில், ஹஜ் முஹமது இருவரும் இறந்துவிட்டார்கள். மற்றவர்கள் சிகிச்சையில் இருக்கிறார்கள்’’ என்றார்.

இதுபற்றி இந்திய தேசிய மக்கள் கட்சியின் மாநில அமைப்பாளர் அலாவுதீன், ‘‘தமிழ்நாடு முழுக்க தொழுகை முரண்பாடு பிரச்னை இருக்கிறது. இப்படிப்பட்ட நிகழ்வுகள் தொடராமல் இருக்க அரசும், முஸ்லிம் அமைப்புகளும் ஒரு தீர்வு காண முன்வரவேண்டும்’’ என்றார்.

இந்த விவகாரத்தில் இதுவரை பதிமூன்று பேரை கைது செய்திருக்கும் போலீஸார், மேலும் பலரை தேடி வருகிறார்கள். மத உணர்வுகள் சம்பந்தப்பட்ட பிரச்னை என்பதால் போலீஸார் மட்டுமின்றி பொதுமக்களும் ஒருவித டென்ஷனில்தான் இருக்கிறார்கள்.

In Delhi the speculation this week is about September 24, when the Allahabad High Court’s Lucknow bench will announce its verdict on the 60- year-old title dispute in Ayodhya, the birthplace of the deity Rama. Very likely, it will remain reserved and be referred to the Supreme Court. Yet even Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was worried enough to wonder before a group of editors over breakfast about how India would react to the judgment, and how that would reflect on our evolution as a nation. Many feel the chances of a verdict favourable to the Waqf Board are low, since the 2003 dig by the Archaeological Survey of India showed that a temple had indeed existed long before the Babri Masjid was built in 1528.

The Congress party is murmuring that a verdict at this juncture would be inconvenient as it might spoil the coming Delhi Commonwealth Games. This is bizarre because (a) for the UPA there will never be a convenient time for the Ayodhya verdict, and (b) the CWG are anyway spoilt already (built on a former Yamuna riverbed, the CWG village is plagued by mosquitoes, monkeys, flood worries, bad traffic, unfinished infrastructure and diminishing international participation). The actual cause of UPA anxiety is that a verdict saying that the archaeological evidence supports the claim of Hindu groups will anger Muslims and endanger princeling Rahul Gandhi’s plans of winning the next Lok Sabha elections.

A verdict in favour of the Waqf Board will hurt the Congress party in the coming Bihar elections as it will anger the upper castes, who are disgruntled with Nitish Kumar’s government and whose votes the Congress has the best chance of capturing after a long electoral drought (depending on how much the princeling campaigns in north Bihar, given that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has been asked to stay away). The party is in a bind.

They are not the only ones for whom a verdict is inconvenient. Though Mayawati is leaving nothing to chance, throwing a heavy security blanket in and around Ayodhya (and there’s still a fortnight left till the verdict), she would have preferred endless postponement. Whatever the verdict is, it will help the young rising star of UP politics — no, not the princeling, but Akhilesh Yadav, the son of Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh. Akhilesh is so politically active on the ground these days that he threatens to monopolise the opposition space in UP. That may not damage Mayawati in the 2012 UP assembly polls, but it will destroy Rahul Gandhi. Mayawati perhaps would prefer avoiding Rahul’s electoral demolition; it might suit her to have the boy not strong but not irrelevant either, and thus easier to extort.

In the event that the Hindus win the case, remember that they have long offered to help reconstruct the Babri Masjid if the mosque reconstruction committee agrees to shift it to another place. Contrast this with the other side of the world. Muslim groups want to build a community centre incorporating a mosque at a site close to “Ground Zero”, where the World Trade Center’s twin towers were demolished by Islamist terrorists nine years ago today.

Though US officials like New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and President Barack Obama are not against the mosque (in keeping with their Constitution), American voters are (a NY Times poll shows a slight majority opposed, while an ABC News poll shows more than two-thirds opposed). This makes you wonder why Muslim groups proposed the mosque in the first place. Did they not expect it would be provocative? In pursuing a solution to the Ayodhya dispute, Indian conservatives have been more willing to accommodate Muslim groups than are American conservatives at “Ground Zero”. True, the insistence for the temple has a political aim but frankly, there is nothing wrong with that; this aim is linked to the cultural expression of a growing Hindu middle class. It is also true that the Hindus are being as intransigent as the Muslims in insisting on the disputed spot as their own, but then there is the precedent of the rebuilding of the temple at Somnath in Gujarat: the mosque was peacefully shifted elsewhere, and there is no residual resentment. Hindu fanatics are positively benign compared to the Floridian pastor who is keeping everyone in suspense over his threat to burn the Quran. To say that he’s a fringe element looking for publicity is not the point; most Muslims would agree that Osama bin Laden too belongs to the lunatic fringe. This pastor might even have a smaller congregation than the 1.2 lakh readers of Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten, whose 2005 series of cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed led to worldwide turmoil.

It merely underscores the point that in America, the land of radical individualism, freedom of expression is sometimes taken to absurd extremes, and it is scary to think of where this spiral of competitive nonsense will one day lead.

Perhaps comparing India, with the world’s third largest Muslim population, to America is invalid. India’s history, geography and demography compel it to be egalitarian and mutually accommodative. America, isolated by the two largest oceans, is a country that was violently settled by Europeans, where immigration of non-whites was not possible till a few decades back, and where Christianity is overwhelmingly the dominant religion. America is the most powerful nation in the world; India is still struggling to be taken seriously (an endeavour not helped by the CWG).

Indian leaders never speak of crusades so if the Ayodhya verdict is not in the Waqf Board’s favour, it ought to end the chapter and move on. Some may argue that defusing this issue will just encourage the BJP to find another religious issue to politicise, so it is pointless to concede the fight. Yet even the BJP realises that religion in politics lately follows the law of diminishing returns, so there is an argument for letting bygones be bygones post-verdict.

Yet if either of the parties were amenable to compromise then we wouldn’t be sitting around waiting for the judgment. All that is likely to happen after the verdict is further litigation, and continuing resentment.

A day will come when someone will ape former US Speaker Newt Gingrich, who said there should be no “Ground Zero” mosque until Saudi Arabia allows churches or synagogues; someone will make a polemical point about temples and Mecca.

Frankly, you can’t help but be pessimistic about religious tolerance, and therein lies the importance of today’s anniversary.

French Senate okays burqa ban

Paris: The French Senate on Tuesday overwhelmingly passed a bill banning the burqa-style Islamic veil on public streets and other places,a measure that affects less than 2,000 women but that has been widely seen as a symbolic defense of French values.
The Senate voted 246 to 1 in favor of the bill in a final step toward making the ban a law though it now must pass muster with Frances constitutional watchdog.The bill was overwhelmingly passed in July in the lower house,the National Assembly.
Many Muslims believe the legislation is one more blow to Frances No 2 religion,and risks raising the level of Islamophobia in a country where mosques,like synagogues,are sporadic targets of hate.However,the laws many proponents say it will preserve the nations values,including its secular foundations and a notion of fraternity that is contrary to those who hide their faces.
In an attempt to head off any legal challenges over arguments it tramples on religious and other freedoms,the leaders of both parliamentary houses said they had asked a special body to ensure it passes constitutional muster.The Constitutional Council has one month to rule.
The bill is worded to trip safely through legal minefields.For instance,the words women, Muslim and veil are not even mentioned in any of its seven articles.
This law was the object of long and complex debates, the Senate president,Gerard Larcher,and National Assembly head Bernard Accoyer said in a joint statement announcing their move.They said they want to be certain there is no uncertainty about its conforming to the constitution.
France would be the first European country to pass such a law,though others,notably neighboring Belgium,are considering laws against face-covering veils,seen as conflicting with the local culture.AP

It appears Mumbai has caught the burqa ban fever. On the day when the French Senate passed the bill to ban women from wearing the burqa in public spaces across the country, a woman was stopped by a security guard from King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEM) located in Parel, for not removing her veil.

Last night, at 9.30, Tanveer Fatima (47), was refused entry in KEM Hospital, as she had her face covered with a burqa.

The incident occurred when Fatima, her husband and another relative reached the hospital, as her uncle was not well. When she tried to enter the hospital with family members, the security guard stopped him.

"We brought our uncle to the hospital, as he is ill. However, the moment I tried to enter, he stopped me and they asked me to show my face and my hair too. I am ready to show my face but showing my hair is too much.

They said that it is compulsory because the image should reflect in the CCTV. They even told me to keep my face open inside the hospital," said Fatima.

"If a female security guard was present I would have agreed, but because of a male security guard, I refused," added Fatima. On the other hand, Vinay Girish Meshram, the security guard told MiD DAY that they were ordered by their seniors to ask all to follow such instructions because of security reasons and were also given a circular, which they claimed was handed out by the Mumbai Police Commissioner's office. When MiD DAY asked to see the circular, the security guard refused. "We stop women who cover their face, as a security measure and have been given directives by our seniors. A previous theft has also made us more alert," said Meshram.
MiD DAY contacted Bhoiwada police station to confirm the presence of such a circular.

However, the officials at the station were unaware of such a circular being passed.

Kerala Muslim girl refuses burqa, wears jeans

KASARGOD: An aeronautical engineer by qualification and preparing for the civil services exam, a 23-year-old Muslim girl here refuses to wear the burqa and often sports jeans despite constant threats to her life.

Rayana R. Khasi, a resident of Kasargode, 600 km from state capital Thiruvananthapuram, has handed over the threat letters she received to the police.

Rayana has the full support of her family. She has had police protection since Aug 17, thanks to a court order, after increased threats in the last two months.

'Is it not my right to decide what I should wear? I studied in Chennai and now I am preparing for my civil service examinations. It is for convenience that I use jeans and I have covered everything that has to be fully covered,' a peeved Rayana told IANS.

She spoke to IANS just after a visit to the local police station to hand over two anonymous letters saying she would be killed if she continued to defy the burqa.

Trouble started after her return from Chennai around this time last year. She was in Chennai for four and a half years to complete her aeronautical engineering course and then stayed on for six more months for civil services exam coaching.

Whne she came back, first there were polite pleas from her relatives to wear the traditional Muslim attire.

'Then my neighbours started advising me and since then there have had anonymous callers on my mobile telling me they will have no choice but to kill me because I continue to defy the burqa,' said Rayana.

Rayana is unfazed as she has the complete support of her parents and four younger sisters.

'My father is a businessman and when he is short of money, it is my mother who comes to his help by giving her gold ornaments. And that is when she resorts to wearing the burqa so that no one can see that she doesn't have her jewellery!

'My sisters also support me because they know I have not done any wrong,' said Rayana, who has Malayalam and geography as subjects in her final exam.

Balakrishnan, the Kasargode police station circle inspector, said: 'She has handed over the letters to us and we have begun investigations.

'We are unable to trace the callers who call from private numbers. Now she has given one number from which she received a threat call and in the next one or two days we will trace the caller and action will be taken,' said Balakrishnan.

Balakrishnan however said they have nothing to prove that the callers belong to the Popular Front of India (PFI), a radical Muslim outfit that has been in the news for chopping off the palm of a college teacher in Muvattupuzha.

Rayana is putting up a brave face. Despite constant threats in the last two months, she is trying her best to concentrate on her studies for the examination next month.

Kolkata: Vindicating the Sachar Committee report on Bengal,the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government has termed nearly 86% of the Muslim population in the state as backward.A total of 53 Muslim groups have been included under OBC category.
The government did the identification in record time and has tried to address a problem that sociologists have been struggling with since Independence.The fresh inclusion would push up OBC quota in Bengal from 7% to 17% and the total quota (including SCs and STs) to 45%,within SCs 50% limit.Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee,however,does not want the media to read too much into the timing of the decision.Election or no election,we have taken a good step.Its out of our social compulsion.What do elections have to do with it He stressed that the benefit had to be reached to more people in very little time.
The CM has miles to go before OBC Muslims reap the fruits of job quota.The ruling LF wants to set the figures right at a faster pace than Karnataka or Andhra Pradesh,which aim at 4% job quota for backward Muslims against his promise of 10%.The CM said his quota promise would be implemented from Monday.OBCs in Bengal will now have two categoriesCategory A (more backward) comprising 49 Muslim groups and Category B (backward) including four Muslim and 39 Hindu groups.Classification was done on the basis of a study by Calcutta Universitys anthropology department.

Hindus rebuild crumbling mosque in Ktaka village

Hubli: Whoever said religion divides people ought to consider a shining example of interfaith harmony a remote village in Karnatakas Gadag district has set.The spirited folk of Purtageri,a village around 500km from Bangalore,dissolved religious lines to come together and rebuild a mosque that was crumbling.
The 50-year-old bamboo-roof mosque in this predominantly Hindu village was in urgent need of repair.With heavy rains lashing the region,its roof was leaking.Around 20-odd Muslims of the village which has 150 Hindu families were struggling to pray there.Thats when the Hindus laid some solid bricks of communal harmony.
Village elders and the gram panchayat inspected the mosque and realized that rebuilding the roof with reinforced concrete was the only permanent solution.As they began rebuilding the mosque,help both in cash and kind began pouring in.
While cement and slab dealers chipped in with the material,workers offered to put in free labour.The villagers volunteered to donate cash amounts ranging between Rs 100 and Rs 1,500, said Shivabasappa Hadagali,a village elder.
Construction work started about a month ago and so far the renovation has cost around Rs 1 lakh.Another Rs 50,000 may be needed to finish the work.Were planning to get the mosque ready by mid-December, said panchayat member Lakshmana Gooli.
Allasaab Nadaf,a daily wager at a sawmill,said he was happy with the initiative.Had our Hindu brothers not helped,the mosque would not have got refurbished.None of the Muslims are involved in the renovation as all of them are poor and couldnt afford to miss even a days wage, he said.
Hanumant Mushigeri,a first-year BA student of the Bhoomaraddi Arts and Commerce College here,said he was proud to be a resident of a village which upholds secularism as much in words as in deeds.

விடுதலையான அப்துல் ரஹீம், தற்போது இந்திய தேசிய லீக் கட்சியின் மாநில அமைப்பாளராக நியமிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறார். இக்கட்சி நடத்தும் பொதுக்கூட்டங்கள், நிகழ்ச்சிகளில் இவர்கள் மூவரும் கலந்து கொள்வதோடு ""எங்களை காட்டிக் கொடுத்ததே ஜைனுல்லாபுதின் என்கிற பி.ஜே.தான்''’என்று பகிரங்கமாகவே குற்றம்சாட்டுகிறார்கள்.

இதென்ன கலாட்டா என்று அப்துல்ரஹீம், அலி அப்துல்லா, ஏர்வாடி காசிம் ஆகிய மூவரையும் சந்தித்தோம். நம்மிடம் பேசிய மூவரும்,’’ ""அப்போது ஜைனுல்லாபுதின் தலைமையில் த.மு.மு.க. உருவான நேரம். பொதுவாகவே தன்னோட வளர்ச்சிக்காக முஸ்லிம் மக்களிடம் வன்முறையை தூண்டுகிற விதத்தில் பேசுவதை வழக்கமாக வைத்திருப்பவர் ஜைனுல்லாபுதின். மார்க்க அறிஞரான இவர் ஆக்ரோஷமாக ஆவேசமாக பேசக்கூடியவர். இவரது பேச்சுக்கு முஸ்லிம் இளைஞர்களிடம் பெரிய ஈர்ப்பு இருக்கும். கோவையில் காவலர் செல்வராஜ் கொல்லப்பட்டதால் முஸ்லிம் சமூகத்துக்கு எதிரா நடந்த கலவரத்தை அடுத்து தமிழகம் முழுவதும் நிறைய இடங் களில் இண்டோர் மீட்டிங் போட்டு பேசிய ஜைனுல்லாபுதின், "முஸ்லிம் களுக்கு பாதுகாப்பு கொடுக்க வேண்டிய இந்த அரசாங்கம், பாது காப்புக் கொடுக்கலை. இனியும் நம்மை பாதுகாக்க மாட்டாங்க. நம்மை நாம்தான் பாதுகாத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும். இதுக்காக போலீஸிடமோ நீதிமன்றத்திடமோ நாம் போகத் தேவையில்லை. நாம் எல்லாரும் ஆயுதம் வைத்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டும். வெட்டுக்கு வெட்டு குத்துக்கு குத்து தான். பதிலடி கொடுக்க வேண்டும். அதனால ஆயுதங்களை நாம் வைத்து கொள்ள வேணும்'’என்று ஆக்ரோஷ மாக ஆர்ப்பரித்தார்.

இவரது இந்த பேச்சு முஸ்லிம் இளைஞர்களை ஈர்த்தது. அவர்களிடையே வன்முறை எண்ணங்களை உருவாக்கியது. அந்த நாட்களில் இவர் பேசிய பேச்சுக்களால் கலவர யோசனைதான் முஸ்லிம் இளைஞர்களிடம் அதிகம் மையம் கொண்டிருந்தன. யாரிடம் பேசினாலும் பி.ஜே. பேச்சுக்களை சொல்லியே ஆவேசம் காட்டுவார்கள். அதே சமயம் செல்வ ராஜ் மர்டர் சம்பவத்தால் போலீஸின் நெருக்கடிகள் வேறு முஸ்லிம்களுக்கு எதிராக கடுமையாக இருந்த தால் இளைஞர்கள் கொடுமைகளுக்கு ஆளானார்கள். அதனால் பி.ஜே.வின் ஆவேசமான பேச்சுக்கள் முஸ்லிம் இளைஞர்களுக்கு வன்முறை எண்ணங்களை ஏற்படுத்தியது.

இப்படிப்பட்ட சூழலில் தான், 1997 டிசம்பர் 6-ந்தேதி பாண்டியன், சேரன், ஆலப்புழை ரயில் களில் சக்தி வாய்ந்த குண்டு வெடித்து தமிழகத்தை உலுக்கியது. பி.ஜே.வின் வன்முறை கலந்த பேச்சுக்களால் ஈர்க்கப்பட்ட இளைஞர்கள்தான் இதனை செய்திருக்கிறார்கள். குண்டு வைக்க தூண்டியது பி.ஜே.தான். இதனால் அப்போதே பி.ஜே.வை அழைத்து விசாரித்தது தமிழக உளவுத்துறை. சந்தேக வலை தன்னை சுற்றி விழுவதை அறிந்த பி.ஜே., குண்டு வைத்தவர்களை சொல்கிறேன் என்று சொல்லி எங்களை காட்டிக் கொடுத்தார். எங்களுக்கும் அந்த சம்பவத்துக்கும் சம்பந்தமே இல்லை. நாங்கள் குண்டு வைக்கவே கிடையாது'' என்று விவரித்தனர்.

தொடர்ந்து பேசிய மூவரும்,’’""மூன்று ரயில் குண்டு வெடிப்பை அடுத்து 98 பிப்ரவரியில் கோவையில் தொடர் குண்டு வெடிப்பு நடந்து 50-க்கும் மேற்பட்டவர் கள் கொல்லப்பட்டார்கள். அத்வானி உயிர் தப்பித்தார். இதில் அல் உம்மா இயக்கத்தினர் கைது செய்யப்படு கிறார்கள். தமிழகத்தில் நடந்த குற்றங்கள் பலவற்றிற் கும் பி.ஜே.வின் தூண்டுதல்கள்தான் காரணமாகவே இருக்கின்றன. குண்டு வெடிப்புகளை தவிர்த்து பார்த்தோமேயானால்... முஸ்லிம்களின் மதகுருக்கள் கொல்லப்பட்டதற்கும் பின்னணியில் இவர் இருந்துள்ளார். உதாரணத்திற்கு... 8.8.97-ல் கே.கே நகர் பள்ளிவாசல் மதகுரு கமருஸ்ஜமான் கொல்லப்படுகிறார். பி.ஜே.வி.ன் தூண்டுதலில் இது நடந்தது.

பள்ளி ஜமாத்தின் புகாரிலே பி.ஜே. பெயர் இருக்கிறது. அதேபோல நாகூர் ஆலிம் ஜார்ஜ் என்பவரை கொல்ல சில இளைஞர்கள் போகிறார்கள். அவரை கொல்ல இளைஞர் கள் முயற்சித்தபோது அவரது மனைவி கொல்லப்பட்டு விடுகிறார். அந்த இளைஞர்களை அனுப்பியது பி.ஜே.தான். ஆனால் அப்பாவி இளைஞர்கள் சிலரை இந்த சம்பவத்தில் மாட்டிவிட்டுவிடு கிறார். 14 வருடங்களாக இன்னமும் சிறையில் இருக்காங்க அந்த அப்பாவி இளைஞர்கள். இப்படி நிறைய சொல்ல முடியும். முஸ்லிம் மக்களிடம் வன்முறையை உருவாக்குவது மட்டுமே தனது கொள்கையாக வைத்துக்கொண்டு செயல்படுகிறார். அதுவும் முஸ்லிம்களிடம் தனது செல்வாக்கு சரியும் போதெல்லாம் வன்முறை பேச்சை கையிலெடுப்பது இவரது வாடிக்கை.

நாங்கள் 14 வருடங்கள் சிறையில் கொடுமை அனுபவித்ததற்கு காரணமான பி.ஜே.வின் உண்மை முகத்தை’முஸ்லிம் மக்களிடம் சொல்ல வேண்டும். எங்களை காட்டிக்கொடுத்த நபரை அடையாளப்படுத்துவது மட்டும்தான் எங்கள் நோக்கம். அதனால்தான் அவரை பகிரங்கமாக பொதுமேடையில் விவாதிக்க அழைக்கிறோம். உண்மையானவராக இருந்தால் எங்களின் சவாலை ஏற்றுக்கொண்டு அவர் விவாதிக்க வரவேண்டும். ஆனால் அதையெல்லாம் விட்டுவிட்டு... நாங்கள் அவருக்கு ஆரம்ப காலத்திலிருந்தே எதிரிகள் என்றும், எங்களால் அவரது உயிருக்கு ஆபத்து என்றும் சொல்லிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார். நாங்கள் ஆரம்ப கால எதிரிகள் என்பதால்தான் எங்களை காட்டிக்கொடுத்தாரா? மரணம்ங்கிறது இறைவ னால் கொடுக்கப்பட்ட அருள் என்று நம்புபவன் தான் உண்மையான முஸ்லிம். ஆனால் அடுத்தவ னால் ஆபத்து என்று சொல்லி முஸ்லிம்களிடம் அனுதாபத்தைத் தேடுவது ஒரு மார்க்க அறிஞ ரான இவருக்கு அழகல்ல. பாதிக்கப்படுகிற முஸ் லிம் சமூகத்திற்கு சட்டரீதியாக போராடி பி.ஜே. போன்றவர்கள் தீர்வு கண்டிருக்கவேண்டும். ஆனா, அதை விடுத்து, இண்டோர் மீட்டிங் நடத்தி ஆக்ரோஷமாக பேசி இளைஞர்களிடம் வன் முறை எண்ணங்களை விதைத்தார் பி.ஜே. அதனால்தான் இத்தனை கலவரங்களும்'' என்கிறார்கள் இயல்பாக.

Deoband: In a significant intervention,Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind,the powerful body of Deobandi clerics,on Sunday backed the demand to withdraw the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and remove security forces and barricades from civilian areas in J&K.
In a resolution adopted at its Kashmir Conference organised here on Sunday,the JuH also demanded an independent inquiry commission to probe human rights violations and trace thousands of lost and missing youths,repeal the Public Safety Act,and ensure compensation to victims.It said the promise of special economic package be kept,and asked the government to take steps to facilitate a settlement within the framework of the Constitution.
This is the first time that JuH has taken up the Kashmir issue.The resolution,while sharing the anguish of Kashmiri people,stressed,We dont consider interests of the Kashmiri people are separate from the interests of Indian Muslims. It also called all likeminded people and organisations to campaign for peace and justice in Kashmir and thwart the enemy forces bent upon disintegration of Kashmir.
When asked why were they silent so long,All India Muslim Personal Law Boards Kamal Farooqui said,Muslims were not comfortable talking about Kashmir for fear of getting branded and harassment by police and intelligence agencies.
Asked about the prospect of resolution of the Kashmir issue,he said,The country is in a re-conciliatory mood,be it on J&K or Ayodhya.So,reconciliation within the Indian Constitution is the way out.An overwhelming section of Kashmiris want it,too.Which stupid person would want to go with Pakistan
The 11-point resolution slammed lethal methods of crowd control and appealed to protesters to adopt peaceful and democratic means to fight for their constitutional rights and abjure violence.
Significantly,while speaking to TOI after the meet,Rajya Sabha MP and JuH leader Maulana Mehmood Madani remained non-committal when asked about the organisations stand on the three prevailing viewpoints in Kashmir: greater autonomy for the region within India,merger with Pakistan and azadi.After our rally on October 31 in Delhi,a delegation will visit Kashmir.We will speak to the people to find out what they want and then decide on our stand, Madani said.
Demanding that AFSPA and Public Safety Act (PSA) be lifted immediately,Swami Agnivesh said he had met Rahul Gandhi about the Kashmir situation.He told me he would go and see it for himself.
Representatives from Kashmir,however,were ambivalent.As a Kashmiri,I am happy that Indian Muslims are at least raising their voice against injustice and repression in Kashmir, said Mufti Ajazul Hassan Banday,Markazi Shariat Board chairman from Sopore.He refused to comment though when asked about solving Kashmir issue within the Indian Constitution.

3 of family die fasting at Ajmer dargah

Ajmer: Three members of a family belonging to Allahabad,who were observing fast for the past 38 days on the premises of Ajmer dargah,died of starvation on Monday.Ten others,including two children aged two and three,have been admitted to JLN Hospital and their condition was stated to be critical.
The surviving members claimed that they were observing a 40-day fast to overcome the influence of black magic and remained unrepentant even after the incident.Though it was claimed that the fasting was similar to the Sufi practice of Chilla Kashi,dargah officials claimed that such harsh practices were against the teachings of Khwaja Moinuddhin Chishti.
According to sources,Mohammad Salam (14),Nausar (17) and Kaiser (28) were declared brought dead by doctors of the JLN Hospital in Ajmer.Nine others,identified as Ali Hussain (3),Farhan (2),Mohammad Mustafa,Munarvi Devi,Sher Ali,Gul Sher,Mohammad Kalam,Rizwan Sheikh and Nargis are undergoing treatment.
The well-educated middle class family was following the superstitious practice of keeping fast for 40 days,claiming that it was as per the orders of the Khwaja, said an official.The head of the family,Mohammad Mustafa (59),who himself was performing the fast,is an ex-merchant navy officer.Mustafa told TOI that his brother had performed some black magic on his family nearly four years ago.Later,I had a dream that I should visit Ajmer dargah with family to overcome the evil spirits, Mustafa said at JLN Hospital.He said that from the day when the witchcraft was performed,everything was going wrong in his family.
However,even after three deaths in the family,the other ailing members were unrepentant as they refused to accept treatment and pulled out the needles from their wrists.When khadims and other people noticed the condition of the fasting family members,they asked them to eat something but all were adamant on their vows.I requested and sat for an hour near them on Sunday and asked them to eat something but they refused, said Muzaffar Bharati,a social worker.Even the khadims were aware of their condition and continuously warned them.Garib Nawaz does not teach these things and I warned him that this was against the teachings.I even persuaded them to drink water, said Natik Chishti,a khadim.
The incident has left the residents,especially Muslim religious leaders,shocked as they were united in their opinion that such a harsh practice was against the teachings of Garib Nawaz.

INCREDIBLE 'LEVITATING - STONES' IN A DARGAH NEAR PUNE

I had a posting in Pune (Maharashtra) during 1990-93, occupying there an enormous 100 year old residential bungalow in which Sir Shah Nawaz Khan Bhutto,CIE,OBE,KIH , father of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, had once lived.

Though holder of a Master's degree in Physics -my Ph.D. was in Commerce- and I was very science-minded, I always had a curiosity about the supernatural. Someone told me about the mystery of the levitating stones in a dargah close to Pune, soon after I had settled down there.

So, one day, with my family I drove from Pune to the village called Khed Shivapur, 16 miles south of Pune, bang on the Pune-Satara road, in which the dargah is located. The dargah is named after the Pir called Kamarali Darvesh, buried there about 700 years back. He was a highly spiritual person, and there is an annual Urs every May when both Muslims and Hindus congregate.

It is a 700 year-old beautifully built dargah with white makrana marble, and has black marble inlay of Koranic texts running all around it at a height. Women are not supposed to enter within the Kamarali Darvesh dargah as the Pir was a bachelor, but this is observed often in the breach. There is a permanently lit lamp inside the mausoleum. Within the compound and outside the dargah-edifice proper, in the open space in-between, lie two almost round stones which are fairly huge and heavy. To me they looked like stones chiselled by man out of some strong or heavy rocks.Unfortunately, clear facts are not available, and they could well have been naturally occurring stones also.

The bigger stone is perhaps 18 inches in diameter and is said to weigh roughly 140 lbs. The smaller stone is perhaps around 14 inches in diameter and is said to weigh about 100 lbs. ( It's so sad that these simple physical properties have not been recorded and kept ). No single person can lift any of the stones from the ground with all the ten fingers, heavy indeed as they are.

How do the stones 'levitate'? The word 'levitate' is perhaps a misnomer because they do not go up from the ground by themselves. Then, what is the miracle about the stones? My younger son of about 10 years and I were keen participants in the mystery-act. Any eleven males (including boys) could stand around the big stone lying on the ground. Each person has to simply bend down and 'gently' touch the stone with just one index finger. The touching has to be in the bottom half, not the top portion of the stone. After the eleven people thus touch the stone, all of them have to utter, in unison and loudly, the expression, "Kamarali Darvesh". My experience was incredible. The stone rises up to eight feet before falling to the ground. While the stone was rising, your index finger feels very light and there is no pressure on it. It was as if some spiritual force through the eleven of us was guiding the stone to rise up. Why does it fall after going up eight feet or so? It is because our finger can no longer touch it above that height. This miracle, it is said, does not work with women, as the Kamarali baba was a bachelor.

With the smaller heavy stone, you require nine males only to repeat this experiment. The stones move anti-gravity-wise and a physics man like me was simply aghast at this miracle. Thereafter, I have gone to the dargah many many times with my visiting guests and friends to show the miracle to them, every time participating in it.

Many persons from different parts of India and some foreigners too could be spotted every time you go to the dargah. It is seldom that you run out of eleven males, and when this happens a few muslim villagers hanging around there, immediately come to your help. The stones do not discriminate against religion for they would go up whether the person touching them is Hindu, Muslim or Christian. They seem to discriminate against women only!

Fasting for 38 days, three of a family die at Ajmer dargahJaipur: Faith can move mountains; but it can also kill you. When Mohammed Mustafa Sheikh, a retired officer in merchant navy, moved to Ajmer in hope of divine intervention to resolve his family troubles, he did not realise that he would paying for his devotion in blood.

Three of his children Maiyasar (22) Nausher (17) and Mohammad Salaam (14) died inside the famous Shrine of Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti on Monday. They had been fasting for over a month with their parents and their siblings at the dargah.

Nausher went down first, vomiting in chronic bouts before collapsing on the ground. Other pilgrims rushed to help. Even as he was being attended to, his siblings Salaam and Maiyasar, also started spitting out gastric juices. There was panic in the dargah and people screamed for help. The three children were taken to the JLN Hospital where they were declared dead.

Ahamed Raza, Nazim of Dargah Committee, said that Mustafa lived in Allahabad with his wife Munni Begum and the children. "Some years ago there were disputes in the Sheikh family; Mustafa took advice of a sage in Allahabad and arrived in Ajmer with family in search of peace two years ago," Nazim told DNA.
Later, acting on the advice of a sage in Allahabad, Mustafa decided to sit on a fast with family for 60 days at the dargah. That was 38 days ago. "The family was staying at a guesthouse near Dargah Bazaar; for the last 38 days they were on fast and would come for prayers at the shrine everyday. Nobody knew they were fasting so long," Nazim said.

The family's rare display of unshakable faith ended up in a tragedy with the death of three children. But, even after the untimely demise of his children, Mustafa and his family are bent on completing the ritual they had initiated.

Police officials who rushed all family members of Mustafa including his three grandchildren to the JLN Hospital for immediate medical attention said that the members were trying to escape from the hospital to return for the fasting. "Several times the family detached their arms from their drip and tried to flee from the hospital," said a police official.

பிரான்சு நாட்டில் முஸ்லிம் பெண்கள் மத வழக்கப்படி முக்காடு அணிய தடை விதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. ஆப்கானிஸ்தானில் அமெரிக்க படையுடன் சேர்ந்து முஸ்லிம்களை தாக்கி வருகிறார்கள்.

இதற்காகத்தான் நைஜர் நாட்டில் பிரான்சு நாட்டினர் 5 பேரை கடத்தி வைத்துள்ளோம்.

நீங்கள் முஸ்லிம்களுக்கு எதிராக செய்யும் காரியங்களால் நீங்கள் உரிய பிரதி பலனை சந்தித்து கொண்டிருக்கிறீர்கள். தொடர்ந்து முஸ்லிம் நாடுகளுக்கு எதிரான செயல்களில் ஈடுபட்டால் நாங்களும் பதிலடி கொடுப்போம்.

எங்கள் மக்களையும், பெண்களையும், குழந்தைகளையும் கொன்று விட்டு உங்கள் நாட்டில் நீங்கள் எப்படி பாதுகாப்பாக இருக்க முடியும்?

நீங்கள் எங்களை கொன்றால் நாங்கள் உங்களை கொல்வோம். நீங்கள் எங்களை கடத்தினால் நாங்கள் உங்களை கடத்துவோம். நீங்கள் எங்களுக்கு சேதத்தை ஏற்படுத்தினால் நாங்கள் உங்களுக்கு சேதத்தை ஏற்படுத்துவோம். நீங்கள் என்ன செய்தாலும் அதற்கு சமமாக நாங்களும் செய்வோம்.

ஜார்ஜ் புஷ் தொடங்கிய ஆப்கானிஸ்தான் போருக்கு நீங்களும் ஆதரவாக இருப்பதால் நீங்களும் அழிவை சந்திப்பீர்கள்.

இவ்வாறு கூறி இருக்கிறான்.

ஆனால் பின்லேடன் குரல் மட்டும் தான் இதில் ஒலிக்கிறது. இது உண்மையிலேயே பின்லேடன் குரலா? அல்லது யாராவது அவனுடைய குரலில் மிமிக்ரி செய்து பேசி இருக்கிறார்களா? என ஆய்வு நடக்கிறது
