Centre should not misuse phone tapping: Ratan Tata

New Delhi: Ratan Tata,chairman of the Tata group,on Friday said a smokescreen was being sought to be created over the reality of the 2G telecom scam,which was about allotment and hoarding of spectrum.
Speaking for the first time after the scam claimed A Rajas job as telecom minister,Tata told NDTV the government should stop this sort of banana republic kind of attacks on whoever one chooses to attack on an unsubstantiated basis. He added that every person had a right to be considered i n n o c e n t until found guilty in a court of law.The government should not misuse its phone-tapping powers,said Tata.He said that the country seemed to have slipped into a morass of allegations... unauthorised tapes flooding... the media going crazy on alleging,convicting,executing... literally character assassination.He said the real scam was about out of turn allocation of spectrum,hoarding of spectrum by important players for free... and things of this nature.An auditor should be brought in,he suggested.
The tapes feature conversations between lobbyist Niira Radia with politicians,industrialists and media personalities.

Plea in SC challenges increase in creamy layer income limit

Govt Says Hike To 4.5L Reasonable

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday admitted educationist P V Indiresans petition challenging the legality of the UPA governments decision to raise the creamy layer income limit from Rs 2.50 lakh to Rs 4.50 lakh per year for OBCs.
A Bench comprising Chief Justice S H Kapadia and Justices K S Radhakrishnan and Swatanter Kumar admitted the petition for a detailed hearing after questioning additional solicitor general Harin Raval whether raising the income limit to exclude the creamy layer from reservation benefits was based on the rate of inflation.
Appearing for the petitioner,senior advocate K K Venugopal said that by this increase,the economically poor among OBCs would be pushed out of reservation benefits by the rich among the backward classes.
The government had defended the decision saying it was a reasonable increase despite many elected representatives demanding raising it to Rs 25 lakh.
Venugopal pointed out that on February 23,2007,the apex court had quashed a Kerala government decision to raise the creamy layer income limit to Rs 3 lakh,terming it as too high.The court had felt that those having Rs 3 lakh income could not be termed as poor or backward,he said.Has the inflation rate touched more than 80% for the central government now to decide the income limit at Rs 4.50 lakh when the apex court had in 2007 turned down Rs 3 lakh limit as unreasonable, the petitioner asked.
Venugopal said that during arguments on the legality of 27% OBC quota,the government had submitted figures indicating that 97.5% of the OBC population had a daily income of less than Rs 80.
If those figures supplied by the government were correct,then the estimated annual income of 97.5% of OBC population was less than Rs 30,000 per year.So where was the necessity to raise the income limit to Rs 4.50 lakh Venugopal asked.

‘‘மத்திய ஊழல் கண்காணிப்புத் துறைக்கு ஊழல் குற்றம் சாட்டப்-பட்ட தாமஸையே ஆணையர் ஆக்கியிருப்பது என்ன நியாயம்?’’

-இப்படி அடுத்தடுத்து பிரதமர் மன்மோகன் சிங்கின் டர்பனை உருவி தலையில் குட்டிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது உச்ச நீதிமன்றம்.

கோர்ட் இப்படியென்றால்... திரும்பிய திசையெல்லாம் ஊழல் வழியும் ஆட்சி என ஊடகங்கள் ஒட்டுமொத்தமாக ஆதாரங்களுடன் செய்தி வெளியிட... ஆடிப்போயிருக்கிறார் மன்மோகன் சிங்.

‘‘இப்படியொரு பதவியில் இருப்பதை விட, கவுரவமாக விலகி விடலாம் என்ற முடிவுக்கு வந்துவிட்டார். அதனால் அவர் எந்த நேரமும் ராஜினாமா செய்யலாம்’’ என்கின்றன பிரதமர் அலுவலக வட்டாரத்தினர்.

மேலும் அவர்கள், ‘‘மத்திய நிதியமைச்சராக இருக்கும் பிரணாப் முகர்ஜிக்கு பிரதமர் பதவி மீது வெகுநாட்களாக மோகம் உண்டு. அதேநேரம் ராணுவ அமைச்சர் ஏ.கே. அந்தோணியும் பிரதமர் பதவியை எதிர்பார்த்து சோனியாவின் சிபாரிசுக்காக காத்திருக்கிறார்.

பிரணாப் முகர்ஜிக்கு பிரதமர் பதவி என்பது 2004 நாடாளுமன்றத் தேர்தல் முடிந்தவுடனேயே பேசப்பட்ட விஷயம். காங்கிரஸின் மூத்த தலைவரான அவருக்கு பிரதமர் பதவி என பேசுவதில் ஒரு நியாயம் இருக்கிறது. ஆனால், ஏ.கே. அந்தோணி பிரதமர் பதவிக்கு ஆசைப்பட ஒரே காரணம், அவர் கேரளாவைச் சேர்ந்தவர் என்பது மட்டுமல்ல... மத்திய அரசிலும், சோனியாவைச் சுற்றியிருக்கும் அத்தனை பேரும் மலையாளிகள் என்பதால்தான்’’ என்கின்றனர்.

டெல்லியில் நிலவும் மலையாளிகள் ராஜ்யம் பற்றி தலைநகர பத்திரிகையாளர்கள், அதிகாரிகள் வட்டாரத்தில் பேசினோம்.

‘‘நமது நாடாளுமன்றத்தின் மொத்த உறுப்பினர்களான 543 பேரில் 20 பேர்தான் கேரளாவிலிருந்து தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்படுகிறவர்கள். அதிலும் காங்கிரஸ் மற்றும் கூட்டணிக் கட்சி எம்.பி.க்கள் 15 பேர்தான். ஆனால், இவர்களில் அமைச்சர்களாக இருப்பவர்கள் ஐந்து பேர்.

ராணுவ அமைச்சர் ஏ.கே. அந்தோணி, வெளிவிவகாரத்துறை அமைச்சர் வயலார் ரவி, விவசாயத் துறை இணையமைச்சர் கே.வி. தாமஸ், உள்துறை இணையமைச்சர் முல்லப்பள்ளி ராமச்சந்திரன், ரயில்வேத் துறை இணையமைச்சர் ஈ.அகமது ஆகிய ஐந்து அமைச்சர்கள் இப்போது இருக்கிறார்கள். வெளிவிவகாரத்துறை இணையமைச்சராக இருந்து பதவி விலகிய சசி தரூரையும் சேர்த்தால் ஆறுபேர்!

அமைச்சரவையில்தான் இப்படி மலையாளிகளுக்கு அதீத முக்கியத்துவம் என்றால், முக்கியத் துறைகள் அனைத்-திலும் உயர்பொறுப்பில் இருக்கும் அதிகாரிகள் யாவரும் மலையாளிகள்தான்.

மத்திய அரசில் மொத்தம் 40 முக்கியத் துறைகள் இருக்கின்றன. இதில் முக்கியமான 20 துறைகளுக்கும் அதிகமான துறைகளுக்குப் பொறுப்பு வகிப்பவர்கள் கேரளாவைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள்தான்’’ என்றவர்கள், அந்த மலையாள அதிகாரிகளின் பெயர்களை கடகடவென வாசித்தனர். (பார்க்க பெட்டியில்)

மேலும் ‘‘இலங்கைத் தமிழர் பிரச்னையில் மத்திய அரசின் அரக்கத் தனங்களுக்கு ஒருவிதத்தில் மலையாள அதிகாரிகளும் காரணம். சிவசங்கர்மேனன், எம்.கே.நாராயணன், ஜி.கே.பிள்ளை, நிருபமா ராவ் ஆகிய கேரள அதிகாரிகள் தங்களின் தமிழர் எதிர்ப்பு உணர்வை மத்திய அரசோடு இணைந்து ஈழத் தமிழர் பிரச்னையில் காட்டி வருகின்றனர்’’ என்கிறார்கள்.

இது தொடர்பாக காங்கிரஸ் மேல்மட்டத் தலைவர்களிடம் விசாரித்தால், ‘‘நிர்வாகப் பொறுப்புகளில் இப்போது மலையாளிகள் ஆதிக்கம் இருப்பது நிஜம்தான். அதற்காக இன ரீதியிலான சாயம் பூச வேண்டியதில்லை’’ என்றார்கள்.

ஆறுதல் தரும் இரண்டு விஷயங்கள்!

உலகின் மிகப் பெரிய ஜனநாயக நாடு என்ற பெருமை இந்தியாவிற்கு உண்டு. அந்த முதலிடத்தைத் தனதாக்கிக் காட்ட அமெரிக்கா எவ்வளவு முயற்சித்தாலும் அமெரிக்கர்களின் இரட்டை வேட ஜனநாயகம் பல சமயங்களில் பல்லிளித்து அவர்களின் உண்மையான சொரூபத்தைக் காட்டிக் கொடுத்துவிடும். வியட்நாம், கிழக்கு தைமூர், ஆப்கானிஸ்தான், ஈராக் என்று உலகத்தின் மிகப் பெரிய பிரச்னைகளுக்கெல்லாம் மூலகாரண-மாகவும் இருந்து, கட்டை பஞ்சாயத்து செய்து தீர்த்து வைக்கும் நீதிபதியாகவும் வேடமிட்டு தன் பொருளாதாரச் சீரழிவை மற்ற நாடுகள் மேல் சாற்றிவிடுவது அமெரிக்கர்கள் மட்டுமே கற்ற கலை.

Karkodan%204.jpg அது இருக்கட்டும்... ஜனநாயகத்-திற்கு அடையாளம் தந்த இந்தியாவின் நிலைக்கு வருவோம். பொருளாதார ஏற்றத் தாழ்வுகளையும் ஜாதி, மத, இனப் பிரச்னைகளையும் அதிகம் எதிர்கொள்ளும் நிலையில் இருந்தாலும், இத்தனை பிரச்னைகளையும் மீறி இந்தியா ஒரு மிகப் பெரிய ஜனநாயகமாக விளங்கியதன் காரணம் இந்தியாவின் நான்காவது தூணான பத்திரிகைதான். எமர்ஜென்சி காலத்தில் எவ்வளவோ நெருக்கடிகளைத் தாண்டி உயிரையும் பணயம் வைத்து ஜனநாயகத்தை மீட்டது இந்தியப் பத்திரிகை உலகம். அருண் ஷோரி, டி.வி.ஆர்.ஷெனாய், ‘சோ’ராமசாமி போன்ற பணத்திற்கோ, பதவிக்கோ, புகழுக்கோ அடிமையாகாத நேர்மையான தைரியமான பத்திரிகையாளர்களைக் கொண்ட நாடு என்ற பெருமை இருந்திருக்கிறது.

அப்படிப்பட்ட அதே பத்திரிகை உலகம் அடுத்த தலைமுறையில் உருக்குலைந்து நீரா ராடியாக்களாகவும், வீர் சங்வி, பர்கா தத்துகளாகவும் பத்திரிகை உலகத்து புல்லுருவிகளாக மாறியது பரிதாபமான சாபக்கேடு. எந்த அரசியல்வாதிகள், தொழில் முதலைகளின் தோலை உரித்துக் காட்ட வேண்டுமோ, அதே கூட்டத்தில் தாமும் சேர்ந்துகொண்டு, அராஜகத்தின் ரிவீஸீரீ-றிவீஸீ (னிuமீமீஸீ -றிவீஸீ?!) ஆகவே இருந்தவர்கள், பத்திரிகைக்காரர்கள் என்பது வெட்கப்பட வேண்டிய விஷயம்.

இந்த நாட்டின் மூத்த, முதன்மையான, நேர்மையான பல பத்திரிகையாளர்கள் & பிரபலமடைந்ததைத் தவிர வேறு எந்த ஆடம்பர வசதிகளையும் அனுபவிக்காதவர்களாக இருக்கும்-போது, பத்திரிகை உலகில் நேற்று முளைத்த சில காளான்கள் இப்படி சமுதாயத்திற்கு துரோகமும் செய்து கோடிகளில் புரள்வது பத்திரிகை உலகம் புரையோடி புழுத்துக்கொண்டு வருவதன் வெளிப்பாடு. பத்திரிகை நிருபர்களும் சரி, ஆசிரியர்களும், அதிபர்களும் சரி & இன்று பலபேர் ஊழல் அரசியல்வாதிகளுக்கும், ஊழல் அதிகாரிகளுக்கும் ஈடாக சமுதாயத்தின் ‘கறுப்பு ஆடுகளாக’ எல்லா ‘குணங்களும்’ பெற்று விளங்குவது இயல்பாகிவிட்டது.

பொதுவாழ்வில் இருக்கும் ஒரு தனி நபரை துதிபாடி பணம், பதவி அல்லது காரியம் சாதித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தது ஒரு கட்டம். அடுத்த கட்டத்தில் ஊழலோ, உல்லாசமோ என்றிருப்பவர்களைப் பற்றி ‘எழுதாமல் இருக்க’ எதையோ எதிர்பார்த்தது நிகழ்ந்தது. இந்த இரண்டு தவறுகளையும் செய்த சில பத்திரிகையாளர்களை மாபாவி என்று சொன்னால், இதையெல்லாம் தாண்டி, ஊழல் நடைபெறுவதற்கே காரணமாகிய கண்றாவி பத்திரிகைக்காரர்களை என்ன சொல்வது? அப்படி அராஜகம் செய்யும் அரசியல்வாதிகளையும், அதிகாரிகளையும், தொழில் அதிபர்களையும் விமர்சித்து வெளிச்சத்துக்குக் கொண்டுவரும் பத்திரிகைகள், பத்திரிகை உலகத்தில் நடைபெறும் இதே அராஜகங்களை ஒருவருக்கொருவர் வெளியிட மாட்டார்களாம் & தார்மீகக் கொள்கையாம் & தொடப்பக்கட்டை!

அப்படியென்றால், மக்களுக்குத் தெரிந்து-விடுமோ&அதனால் பொதுவாழ்வு பாதிக்கப்படுமோ என்று பயப்படும் அரசியல்-வாதிகளையும் மீறிய அசுர சக்தியா இப்படிப்பட்ட சில பத்திரிகை உலகப் பதர்கள்? யாரை அமைச்சராக்குவது, எந்த இலாகா பெறுவது, எப்படி ஊழலை மறைப்பது என்றெல்லாம் மணிக்கணக்கில் போனில் பேசி பொதுமக்களின் நலனைப் போட்டுத் தள்ளுவார்களாம். ஆனால், அந்த டேப்பை வெளியிட்டது முறை-யில்லையாம். டாடா குழுமம் வெட்கமில்லாமல் கோர்ட்டிற்குச் சென்றிருப்பது ஜனநாயகத்தை ஏளனம் செய்யும் நடவடிக்கை.

Karkodan%201.jpg எந்த அமெரிக்கா ஜனநாயக வேஷம் என்ற பசுத்தோல் போர்த்திக் கொண்டு செயல்பட்டதோ, அங்கேயேகூட ‘விக்கிலீக்ஸ்’ என்ற ஊடகம் உயிருக்குப் பயப்படாமல் அதிரடி உண்மைகளை உலகுக்குக் காட்டியிருக்கிறது. இனக்கொலை புரிந்த ராஜபக்ஷே போர்க்குற்றவாளி என்று இலங்கைக்கான அமெரிக்க தூதரே எழுதியதை மறைத்து, அப்பாவித் தமிழர்களைக் கொன்றதை மென்று முழுங்கிய அமெரிக்காவும், ஐ.நா.வும் அசடு வழிகிறாற்போல் இந்த விக்கிலீக்ஸ் விஷயங்கள் வெடித்திருக்கின்றன. நடப்பதைப் பார்த்தால் இந்தியப் பத்திரிகை உலகத்தின் நேர்மையும், தைரியமும் இடம் நகர்ந்து அமெரிக்கா சென்றுவிட்டதோ என்று கவலைப்பட வேண்டியிருக்கிறது.

இத்தனை அக்கிரமங்கள் நம் நாட்டில் நடந்தேறினாலும் ஆறுதல் தருவது இரண்டு விஷயங்கள். ஒன்று & நமது நீதிமன்றங்கள். அதுவும், உச்ச நீதிமன்றம் நியாயத்தையும், நேர்மையையும் தைரியமாக நிலைநாட்டுகிறது என்ற நம்பிக்கை. இரண்டு & பல புல்லுருவிகளை உருவாக்கிய அதே பத்திரிகை உலகத்தில்தான் 2&நி மெகா ஊழலைப் போராடி வெளிச்சத்திற்குக் கொண்டு வந்தது கோபிகிருஷ்ணன் என்ற இளைய தலைமுறை பத்திரிகையாளர்தான் என்பது. வாழட்டும் நம் உச்ச நீதிமன்றத்தின் நேர்மை! வளரட்டும் கோபிகிருஷ்ணன்கள்!!

Mrs Sonia Gandhi slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), saying that while the Congress had asked their ministers to resign after allegations of corruption, the BJP lacked the courage to do so.

Could the BJP remove Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa after his family and their real estate adventures became an issue?
When it comes to corruption, regional parties fare no better.
People's verdict and trust are often treated as licence for asset accumulation rather than effective governance.

There are a few exceptions to the rule but they can't fight the system on their own. Unless we bring transparency into political funding we will continue to be held hostage by vested interests.

WE HAVE several Assembly elections due in 2011 and I would be very surprised if the Trinamul Congress, under Mamata Banerjee's leadership, does not sweep the West Bengal elections by a two-third margin.
In Uttar Pradesh, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) will win by a wider margin than before and the decline of the Samajwadi Party will continue. The Congress can be hit by the BSP "upside" as votes consolidate. In Kerala and Assam, the Congress should win comfortably.

Punjab will witness a tough battle between the Congress and the Akali Dal-BJP combine that will suffer from antiincumbency trend. The Congress, led by Capt.
Amarinder Singh, should do well if its internal dissent is kept under control. For Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu one would need the services of an eminent astrologer to predict the outcome but "change" is in the air. Governance is never easy and I think that the antiincumbency factor will take a heavy toll on politicians. With general elections due in 2014 it would be premature to determine winners and losers but it would be fair to state that in 2010, the Congress lost some momentum, the BJP arrested its downward spiral, while the Left continued to slide. Regional parties with strong charismatic leaders grew in stature, as we witnessed in Bihar and will see soon in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.

Chennai: About 300 lakh doses of the diphtheria,pertussis and tetanus (DPT) vaccine meant for children have been rendered unusable after a substandard component tetanus toxoid was added to the vaccine at the Pasteur Institute of India,Coonoor,an internal inspection has found.The loss because of the spoilt vaccines and their vial monitor labels,now rendered useless,is pegged at 8.5 crore.This may force the government to buy costlier vaccine from private labs.
Insiders told TOI that intense pressure from the ministry of health and family welfare and over-enthusiasm on the part of the institute resulted in hurried preparation of the vaccine,giving a goby to quality control norms.Incidentally,the Tamil Nadu Directorate of Drugs Control on Tuesday rejected the institutes application for the World Health Organisations (WHO) good manufacturing practices (GMP) certificate.
The Drug Controller General of India had cancelled the manufacturing licences of Pasteur Institute;BCG Lab,Chennai;and the Central Research Institute,Kasauli,on January 15,2008,citing nonadherence of good manufacturing practices.The suspension was revoked on February 22,2010,to allow the labs to carry on with production using materials in the pipeline and upgrade themselves to WHO GMP standards before resuming full-fledged production.
Following an enquiry from the ministry of health in March 2010,Pasteur Institute said it could supply 320 lakh doses of DPT vaccine and went into manufacturing mode before getting the GMP certificate.However,early this month,samples from 50 lakh doses of the prepared vaccine were tested before being filled into vials and were found unusable.

New Delhi: Twelve transfers in five years,an illegal suspension order,a fabricated chargesheet,denial of promotion and a spoiled ACR.This is what Sanjiv Chaturvedi,a young forest service officer,was awarded by the Haryana government.What did he do to deserve it He unearthed a multi-crore scam including senior officials,implemented Supreme Courts orders preventing a wildlife sanctuary from being destroyed and stopped government money from being spent on private lands of influential people.
For three years,the Prime Ministers Office,the state information commission,the environment ministry,the Central Administrative Tribunal and the cabinet secretariat tried to intervene to and stop the relentless harassment of the young officer,but the Haryana chief minister B S Hoodas office paid no heed.Ministers,officials in the CMs office and senior bureaucrats continued to hound Chaturvedi at every possible chance for performing his legitimate duty.Now a report prepared by two Central government officials A K Srivastava,inspector general of forests,and Shally Ranjan,assistant inspector general of forests,at the instance of the cabinet secretary has uncovered the sordid tale of how the Haryana government hounded the whistleblower while others feted him for his achievements.Recommending that the Centre revoke the chargesheet against the official and provide him immediate relief,the inquiry panel has noted that the persecution was overseen by the then forest minister Kiran Chaudhary,two OSDs in Haryana CMs office,and senior state govt officials.
ToI first reported on his case three years ago when his victimisation and fight with corruption in the state had just begun.The two-member committee has noted in the report that,It is a classic case of the State Government itself breaching the law,protecting the violators and punishing the officer who tried to uphold the rule of law.The committee has recommended action against the then forest minister Choudhary;the then principal chief conservator of forests of Haryana,J K Rawat;finance commissioner and principal Secretary Keshani Anand Arora;another finance commissioner and principal secretary (Forests) H C Disodia,and the then conservator forests M M Joshi.
The committee has also recommended a CBI enquiry into the roles of politicians like Chaudhary and their appointees,like the two OSDs in CM Hoodas office B R Beri and R D Sheokand..
The committee members have concluded that Chaturvedi tried to prevent destruction of the Saraswati Wildlife Sanctuary by politically influential people.He tried to report and check the large scale financial irregularities in the afforestation projects of the state government,funded by the Central government and international agencies,in CM Hoodas constituency.The committee underlines the lengths to which the Haryana authorities went to harass the IFS official.All the powers available with the vested interests in the state government,including suspension,issuing charge-sheet & keeping it pending for more than three years,frequent transfers,slapping false cases,etc.were applied on the officer.Despite repeated abrupt transfers and fabricated chargesheets,Chaturvedi did not relent.When sent to Jhajjar on a punishment posting,he uncovered a multi-crore plantation scam in Jhajjar.

Jan. 2: The CBI is all set to register an FIR in connection with the Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society scam.

According to sources, the agency has found evidence of alleged forgery and manipulation of documents on the part of some Army officials and bureaucrats in the Adarsh Society scam.
The agency has decided to file a regular case only after finding prima facie evidence of criminality, sources added. "The scrutiny of the documents, recently seized by the CBI, has revealed that the forgery has been allegedly committed by a few defence officials in criminal conspiracy with bureaucrats of the Maharashtra government and private individuals," said sources. They added that a decision on registering the case under provisions of the IPC and Prevention of Corruption Act would be taken once a clearance came from the legal department of the CBI.

The CBI had registered a preliminary enquiry (PE) into the case on November 15. The agency also received over 4,000-page documents from the city collector’s office, sources said. The CBI had earlier initiated suo motu action in connection with various allegations pertaining to the society.

“If required, the agency will also consult Army and Navy personnel in connection with its probe into the scam. Both the Navy and Army have reportedly conducted their own internal inquiry respectively. The agency will also probe the manner in which the occupation certificate was issued to the occupants of the society by the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA),” sources said.

Chennai 15 July: Congress leaders should answer is what they were doing when Rahul Gandhi with his SPG in tow was formally detained by the FBI at Boston airport on 21 September 2001 for five hours and interrogated.

The question was raised by Dr. Subramanian Swamy in a statement released by him regarding the alleged stripping of the former Defence Minister George Fernandez at the airport in United States of America.

It was earlier reported that the former Defence Minister George Fernandes was strip-searched twice in Dulles Airport, in the US capital area, when he was defence minister, once while on an official visit to Washington and another time while en route to Brazil, according to former Deputy Secretary of state Strobe Talbott.

In his new book Engaging India - Diplomacy, Democracy and the Bomb, Talbot says he was told this angrily by Fernandes himself, when he had visited India in February this year as part of a delegation assembled by the Confederation of Indian Industry.

The controversy over reports that then defence minister Fernandes was "strip-searched" twice during a visit here in 2002 and 2003 was raised at the State Department briefing yesterday, even as US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, who was recently in New Delh , apologized to the former defence minister.

Replying to questions on the subject, Richard Boucher, spokesman for the State Department said, "Those are old reports based on a book that's coming out."

He added "I believe he (Richard Armitage) spoke with former Minister Fernandes, just to make sure we understood what the situation was, and obviously we'll look into anything that might have happened," he added.

Answering a specific question on Armitage apologizing to Fernandes, the spokesperson said: "Armitage, we believe, said that he was not strip-searched but that he removed his shoes. And I don't understand why asking somebody to remove their shoes while going through security is worthy of an apology because, if it is, you should be apologizing to tens of thousands of people every day, including US senators and lots of other people. “

"So it would be nice to know what actually happened to him and why it merits an apology, given that it seems to reflect what basic treatment in most American airports today is."

Fernandes had told reporters Wednesday that US security personnel asked him to put his hands up and remove his coat, shoes and socks. But he said “Strobe Talbot book described it a strip search but this was no strip show like the phrase implies." he said.

Meanwhile Dr. Subramanian Swamy in a press release alleged that the ruling Congress party failed to take action against the search of Rahul Gandhi in 2001, at the Dulles airport instead they are shedding crocodile tears over an incident which was never protested by George Fernandez.

It is a surprise that the Congress Party and its allies are shedding crocodile tears for the plight of George Fernandez being asked to go through security in Washington Dulles airport after removing his shoes and coat.

Since he was on an official visit it was inappropriate and hence the US administration through Mr.Armitage has expressed their apologies, belatedly because there was no formal protest earlier.

What the Congress leaders should answer is what they were doing when Rahul Gandhi with his SPG in tow was formally detained by the FBI at Boston airport on September 21, 2001 for five hours and interrogated.

He was completely searched and his passport photocopied.

It was only after the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) launched a formal protest that he was allowed to go.

It also curious that the PMO thought it fit to formally protest for Rahul Gandhi on private visit but not for Fernandes on an official visit.

Such was the PMO those days because of a secret pact between Vajpayee and Sonia Gandhi with National Security Adviser Brijesh Mishra acting as her errand boy.
