Pope John Paul ‘ignored abuse of 2,000 boys’ , US cardinal protected priest

By eassurvey

Late Pope ‘covered up’ sexual abuse scandal 04 Apr 2010 The plight of the Vatican continues to draw worldwide attention as revelations surface that the late pope John Paul II had allegedly blocked an investigation into the allegations of sexual misconduct by Catholic priests….According to Schonborn, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who went on to become Pope Benedict XVI, had tried to investigate the allegations of sexual abuse by clergies as head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. His efforts, Schonborn claimed, had nevertheless been blocked by “the Vatican”, an apparent reference to John Paul…..This comes as John Paul also faced criticism last week from his home country of Poland for protecting Archbishop Juliusz Paetz, who was accused of abusing trainee priests.

How a Molesting Case Emerged Decades Later – Wilfried Fesselmann recently told his story of sexual abuse at the hands of a priest in 1979. The priest was transferred, but not formally suspended until last month. By NICHOLAS KULISH April 1, 2010 ESSEN, Germany — The case that has raised questions about the future pope’s handling of a pedophile priest in Germany came to light three decades after it occurred, and then almost by chance. It happened when Wilfried Fesselmann, an early victim, said he stumbled on Internet photographs of the priest who sexually abused him, still working with children….Father Hullermann went on to molest other boys and was not formally suspended until last month, after the German church acknowledged that “bad mistakes”  were made in the handling of his case. The church said the decision to allow the priest to resume his duties in 1980 was made solely by Cardinal Ratzinger’s top aide at the time, but church officials also said the future pope was sent a memo about the reassignment. While the church has acknowledged Father Hullermann’s extensive history of sexual abuse, there have been no court proceedings on Mr. Fesselmann’s claims. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/02/world/europe/02church.html

US cardinal protected child abusing priest: court documents By Lucile Malandain (AFP) 4/3/10  WASHINGTON — A staunch defender of Pope Benedict XVI in pedophile scandals now gripping the Vatican reassigned a US priest and alleged child molester in the 1990s without warning parishioners, court documents showed. In sworn testimony in 2006 about his time as Archbishop of Portland, Oregon (1986-1995), US Cardinal William Levada said he decided to reassign the offending priest after he underwent therapy. “The abuse in question had happened 20 years before, or so… the recommendation of the therapy was that he was not at risk for re-abusing and that it would be prudent to reassign him… and prudent also to put conditions that would make sure that he would not be overstressed to do some inappropriate behavior,” Levada testified….In the testimony, Levada was asked if he had warned parishioners about the Oregon priest’s past — inappropriate sexual behavior with teenagers in the 1970s. He answered that he had not. “I took what I believe to be the prudent step of giving complete information to the pastor of the parish… and assigning him as the supervisor to (the priest) who (would) have weekly or regular meetings with him and so forth,” the cardinal said.

Belgian bishop denounces silence on sex abuses 4/4/10 Belgium’s top Roman Catholic bishop has denounced the “guilty silence” of church officials in the pedophile priest scandal that has rocked much of Europe and the US. Archbishop of Brussels, Andre Joseph Leonard, has criticized the church for often worrying more about the reputation of priests and “savagely exploiting the abused children.” http://www.presstv.ir/detail.aspx?id=122393&sectionid=351020606

John Paul ‘ignored abuse of 2,000 boys’ Cardinal Hans Hermann Groer abused an estimated 2,000 boys for decades without sanction Bojan Pancevski in Vienna and John Follain in Rome 4/4/10 Allegations that the late pontiff blocked an inquiry into a paedophile cardinal, promoted senior church figures despite accusations that they had molested boys and covered up innumerable cases of abuse during his 26-year papacy have cast a cloud over his path to sainthood. The most serious claims related to Cardinal Hans Hermann Groer, an Austrian friend of John Paul’s Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, Groer’s successor, criticised the handling of that scandal and other abuse cases last week after holding a special service in St Stephen’s cathedral, Vienna, entitled “Admitting our guilt”.

Schönborn condemned the “sinful structures” within the church and the patterns of “silencing” victims and “looking away”….The Groer affair became public in 1995 when former pupils of an elite Catholic school accused him of sexual abuse. After an outcry, Groer was replaced and made the prior of a convent. He was never punished and issued only a vague apology in 1998 before retreating to a nunnery where he lived until his death in 2003. Some of his victims were offered “hush money” from the church….John Paul also faced criticism last week from Poland for protecting Archbishop Juliusz Paetz, who was accused of abusing trainee priests. Letters detailing the charges were sent to John Paul’s office and to Ratzinger in 2000 but were ignored. Paetz resigned in 2002 when the allegations became public….John Paul was also accused of ignoring controversy over John Magee, a former private secretary to three popes including the Polish pontiff, who named him Bishop of Cloyne in 1987. Late last month Magee was forced to resign after an independent report found that his diocese in Ireland had put children at risk.http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/faith/article7086738.ece

Pope’s immunity could be challenged in Britain 4/4/10 By PAISLEY DODDS  LONDON (AP) – Protests are growing against Pope Benedict XVI’s planned trip to Britain, where some lawyers question whether the Vatican’s implicit statehood status should shield the pope from prosecution over sex crimes by pedophile priests….Although Benedict has not been accused of any crime, senior British lawyers are now examining whether the pope should have immunity as a head of state and whether he could be prosecuted under the principle of universal jurisdiction for an alleged systematic cover-up of sexual abuses by priests.http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/E/EU_BRITAIN_POPE?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2010-04-04-07-17-26

Report: Police and clergy protected pedophile priests

By eassurvey

http://ritualabuse.us
A New report on clerical abuse from 1975 to 2004 details the cover-up of abuse allegations. By Conor O’Clery – GlobalPost November 27, 2009
DUBLIN, Ireland – Police officers, government officials and bishops of the Catholic church in Ireland have been harshly censured in a report on clerical child abuse over three decades in the Archdiocese of Dublin. Coming just a few months after an equally harsh report on the ill-treatment of children in Church-run industrial schools, the latest revelations have shocked Catholics and non-Catholics alike throughout the island.
An official commission investigated 320 allegations against a sample of 46 out of 183 priests from 1975 to 2004. It found that several cardinals and bishops protected criminal priests while taking no action to protect children….

The driving force behind the report is Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, who came from Rome in 2003 to take over the archdiocese and handle the growing scandal.
Yesterday, at a news conference, holding his hand over his heart, and with tears in his eyes, Martin apologized as a man and a bishop. “How do I feel when I have to unveil here before you the revolting stories of the sexual assault and rape of many young children and teenagers by priests of the archdiocese?” he said. “To each and every survivor my apology, my sorrow and shame for what happened.”

The report of the commission found that the protection of pedophile priests was facilitated by “the structures and rules of the Catholic Church.” Government prosecutors and police facilitated the cover-up by allowing the church institutions to be beyond the reach of the normal law enforcement processes. Over the period the welfare of children was not even a factor to be considered. “Instead the focus was on the avoidance of scandal and the preservation of the good name, status and assets of the institution and of what the institution regarded as its most important members – the priests.”

A secret shame Inside the latest scandal to rock the Catholic church

By eassurvey

When Todd Carpunky was 16, he joined the Legion of Christ. In his six years with the Catholic order, he bore witness to a culture of sexual abuse that rocked the Church. Here, he talks candidly to Peter Stanford about the secretive world created by the order’s founder while the papal authorities looked the other way….That trip was the first public sign of the extraordinary bond between Maciel and the man in charge of a church of 1.2 billion souls. In the subsequent 26 years of John Paul’s reign, the Legion was regularly lauded by him for its unwavering fidelity to church teaching, its intolerance of dissent, and its conviction that only Catholicism could save the world. Maciel was a prince of the Church, in the papal inner circle, sitting on the most important Vatican committees and running his own congregation of 800 priests and 2,500 seminarians, plus the 70,000 lay members of the associated Regnum Christi movement, as it spread around the globe, including a base in London.

Much has been made of the power wielded by the secretive Opus Dei under John Paul II, not least by Dan Brown in The Da Vinci Code, but many Vatican-watchers believe that the Legion of Christ was bigger, richer (annual budget £435m), more influential, and even more sinister.

Parents of youngsters recruited as Legionaries described it as a cult that targeted the young and naive in particular, some of them just 13, and then “brainwashed” them. But it is Maciel himself who has proved most controversial. Nuestro Padre was, according to one biographer, “a narcissistic sociopath” with a taste for flights on Concorde and five-star hotels. He is acknowledged by the Legion to have fathered at least one child – a 23-year-old daughter said to be called Norma Hilda and now living in Madrid.

It has also been alleged that he was a paedophile. The first accusation came in 1976 from the former head of the Legion in the US. By 1998, the Vatican had received sworn statements from eight men, all detailing how Maciel had abused them when they were young recruits.

Throughout the 1990s, a series of allegations of sexual abuse of minors by priests that had been covered up by the church authorities shook Catholicism in America, Canada, Australia, Ireland, the UK and other countries. At least two cardinals were forced to retire, dozens of paedophile priests were jailed for their crimes, and the Church paid out millions of pounds in compensation to victims. The damage to its reputation in the eyes of its own congregations has been huge, and bishops have struggled to convince sceptics that they have put into place procedures rigorous enough to ensure that such a betrayal never happens again.

Yet in Maciel’s case, it took 30 years – until 2006, after John Paul’s death – for the new pope, Benedict XVI, finally to issue a public rebuke, and then it was simply an order that he should see out his days in private prayer rather than face a court. The long delay is evidence, some have suggested, that the Vatican still does not take the issue of paedophile priests sufficiently seriously.

A year after Nuestro Padre’s death in 2008, the Vatican announced an investigation into the Legion. An unnamed official told America’s National Catholic Reporter newspaper that the total number of Maciel’s abuse victims was “more than 20 and less than 100″.

As a team of cardinals opens the locked cupboards of an organisation that prided itself on secrecy – all new recruits had to take a unique private vow (abolished by Benedict in 2007) never to speak ill of the founder and to report to superiors anyone who did – the Catholic Church is once more mired in a scandal about the sexual abuse of minors, and the abuse of power….

A catalogue of abuse

Britain Father Michael Hill (pictured) was convicted in 1997 of sexual abuse of nine children. It emerged that his local bishop, the future Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, had been aware that concerns had been raised about Hill’s behaviour, but had moved him to another parish.

US Allegations of sexual abuse of minors by Catholic priests were first made public in 1984. In September 2003, the archdiocese of Boston paid $85m in compensation to 552 victims. Many other dioceses have made similar payments – to an estimated total of $1bn. In 2004 the archdiocese of Portland declared itself bankrupt as a result.

Austria Cardinal Hans Hermann Groër was dismissed as Archbishop of Vienna by Pope John Paul II in 1995 after it emerged that he had abused young boys at Catholic schools over a 40-year period. One expert suggested he may have had 2,000 victims.

Ireland In May 2009, High Court judge Sean Ryan published a report of his nine-year investigation detailing the beating, rape and humiliation of thousands of children by priests and nuns in the schools they ran.

Australia In July 2008 in St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney, Pope Benedict XVI made an unprecedented apology for the crimes of priests against minors. “I am deeply sorry for the pain and suffering the victims have endured and I assure them that, as their pastor, I too share in their suffering.”  http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/a-secret-shame-inside-the-latest-scandal-to-rock-the-catholic-church-1739889.html

Priest admits molesting boys

By Aron Miller aron.miller@dailynews.com 818-713-3756 Staff Writer

Updated: 12/03/2008 12:54:37 AM PST

Ending another case of priest sexual abuse, a former member of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles who worked at a Pacoima church pleaded guilty Tuesday to molesting a boy 20 years ago.

George Miller, 70, also admitted molesting three other victims whose cases can’t be prosecuted because of the statute of limitations, prosecutors said.

Miller, who has been free on bail since his July 2007 arrest, faces three years in prison when he is sentenced Jan. 30. He must serve 85 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.

Miller, who lives in Oxnard, had been charged with molesting a boy he met while assigned to the Guardian Angel Church in Pacoima. He befriended the boy’s mother and became a frequent guest at their home, police said.

The molestations occurred between March 1988 and March 1991, when the victim turned 12.

The Miller case was just one of dozens involving Archdiocese of Los Angeles priests. The cases culminated in 2007 with a record $660 million settlement involving 508 victims.

In a 2002 interview with the Daily News, one of the accusers said Miller had molested him at a Malibu beach house that priests used as a retreat.

That case was dismissed in 2003 after the U.S. Supreme Court invalidated a law extending California’s statute of limitations for sex crimes.

Miller was ordained in 1963 and served at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Santa Clarita, San Buenaventura Mission Church in Ventura and St. Philomena in Carson before arriving at Guardian Angel in 1973. He served at the Pacoima parish until 1984, the last three years as pastor, before being transferred to Santa Clara Church in Oxnard. He went out on sick leave in 1996, and retired a year later.

500,000 Starlings represent the victims' voice of the John Paul II Pedophile Priests Army

http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=6279476 Video

abc__081117_mn.jpg

The autumn skies of Rome at dusk belong to the starlings.

God has enough of the GAY voice of Benedict XVI. God no longer want to hear the “holy” hypocrisy of the Opus Dei in their WORLD DOMINATION Agenda. So God sends 500,000 starlings which represent the victims of the John Paul II Pedophile Priests Army whose blood are crying out to Heaven for vengeance. These starlings voice drowns out the GAY voice of Benedict XVI who lives with his handsome GAY private secretary Msgr. Georg – see our blog for his photos www.pope-ratz.blogspot.com
500,000 starlings warn Benedict XVI his days are numbered and the Vatican's hours are ticking.

The Vatican was predicted in the Third Secret of Fatima to sink into a black hole and not one of its pillars will remain standing – like the Temple of Solomon.

So those 5 BILLION Euros annual deposit of the Bank of the Pope will all disappear like smoke because God ahs no use for the wealth of the Opus Dei on this planet because they covered-up the John Paul II Pedophile Priests Army for over 26 years...and worshipped on the pedophilia-altar at the Vatican.

The Sky-High Mob Over Rome

Starlings Have Been Arriving in Rome Since the 1920s, With Current Estimates at 500,000

ROME, Nov. 17, 2008

The autumn skies of Rome at dusk belong to the starlings. Lifting off from their plane tree roosts...

The autumn skies of Rome at dusk belong to the starlings. Lifting off from their plane tree roosts along the Tiber river, it is a slow gathering. A small flock flies about and is joined by another small flock. Yet another joins them, and then another and they are a sky-high mob.

Seen from a roof terrace in central Rome, they resemble circus acrobats warming up for their finale with somersaults and arching pirouettes. They are their own amusement park ride, dipping and soaring with switchbacks and loop de loops.

Hundreds and then gusts of thousands glide over the domes and antennaed rooftops. Sometimes, when the birds fly low enough, you can hear the whoosh and a faint murmuring as they pass overhead. They seem to be heading for a certain somewhere until they veer off in another direction entirely.

John Paul II's 10 Most Dangerous Predator Priests walking free in America

SNAP fact sheet – 10 most dangerous US predator priests walking free (11/08)

MD – Fr. Fernando Cristancho

In 2001, he sexually exploited and impregnated Dalia Fernandez. She gave birth to triplets and he molested two of them in 2005-06, according to a ruling by Maryland ’s second highest court (the Court of Special Appeals). The court gave custody of the six-year-old triplets to Fernandez. The priest

is originally from and worked in Virginia and Maryland . In 2004, the Baltimore archdiocese apparently revoked his permission to act as a priest.
http://www.mddailyrecord.com/article.cfm?id=8916&type=UTTM

http://www.baltimoreexaminer.com/local/crime/Priest_loses_custody_of_triplets.html

Details: Becky Ianni of Northern Virginia SNAP 703 801 6044

MA, NY, MD: - Fr. A.J. Cote

He is accused in a civil lawsuit of molesting two Massachusetts boys in 2005. While committing those crimes, he was on suspension for also sexually abusing a Maryland boy in 2001-02. That boy settled his civil lawsuit against Cote and his employers (the Dominicans) in 2007 for $1.2 million. Cote is believed to be living in western Massachusetts or Manhattan .

Details: Attorney Jeff Anderson of St. Paul MN 651 227 9990, 612 817 8665 cell

AZ – Msgr. Dale Fushek

He is awaiting trial early next year on seven “misdemeanor sex charges stemming from his relationships with five boys in the 1980s and ’90s, including indecent exposure, assault and contributing to the delinquency of a minor,” according to news accounts. For years, he traveled the country promoting the ‘Life Teen’ program h e founded. . In January 2008, Phoenix ’s archbishop warned Catholics to avoid the new church Fushek started and still runs.

Details: Attorney Stuart Mermelstein of Miami 305 931 2200

NY – New York City - Msgr. Wallace Harris

In August of this year, he forced to step down as pastor because of allegations of sexual abuse. He now faces ten accusers but many of his parishioners have rallied around him and have basically erected a shrine to him outside his former church.

Harris is charismatic and well connected in both political and church circles. (New York ’s governor is a parishioner and Harris helped plan the Pope’s spring 2008 visit to NY.)

Details: Rev. Eric C. Crumbley, founder of Harlem Faith Center in Harlem

NY – Long Island – Msgr. Alan Placa

In a 2003 grand jury report, Placa is accused of molesting kids himself and of helping other predator priests cover up their own child sex crimes. By virtue of his training (he’s a civil and a canon lawyer), his connections across the country (he advised bishops on how to ‘handle’ abuse cases), and his close relationship with Rudy Giuliani (they’re boyhood pals and he’s on Rudy’s payroll), Placa must be considered very dangerous.

Details: Richard Tollner of Albany , New York 518 724 2462, 518 428 5000, tollner1@aol.com

IL - Fr. Kenneth J. Martin

As recently as last month, Martin, an admitted and convicted child molester, was working and living part time for a close friend who heads the Chicago archdiocese. In 2003, six months after bishops pledged to ‘reform’ and be ‘open’ about child sex cases, a reporter discovered Martin lived a week each month with Cardinal Francis George’s Gold Coast mansion. In the ensuing public uproar, George said Martin would no longer work for the archdiocese. But George kept Martin on the payroll anyway.

Martin is especially dangerous because he’s clearly very close to and favored by George, the current head of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. Because his conviction was before 1996, when Delaware ’s sex offender registry was created, Martin doesn’t have to register as a sex offender. In the only interview he gave to a reporter, he denied having pled guilty to criminal abuse charges.

Details: David Clohessy of SNAP, 314 566 9790 cell

CA - Fr. Eric Swearingen

In 2006, in a civil trial, a jury found him guilty of molesting then 12 year old Juan Rocha in the late 1980s/early 1990s. (They deadlocked, however, on whether or not church supervisors knew earlier that he was a molester. So the judge declared a mistrial.) Afterwards, he was named rector of a diocesan high school. Now, Swearingen is the pastor of Holy Spirit Church in the Fresno Diocese.

he’s still pastor at Holy Spirit Church in Fresno CA :

Details: Dave Drivon of Stockton 209 466 0982, drivonesq@yahoo.com, drivon@drivonlaw.com
Larry Drivon of Stockton 209 644 1234, 209 969 0982 abatare@comcast.net

TX, CO, MO - Brother William Mueller

Just last month, 23 civil lawsuits were settled against this cunning predator, who often used ether to knock teenaged boys out, then sodomize or molest them. Mueller often deceived his victims, claiming to be studying psychology and conducting bizarre ‘experiments’ about fear and trust. A former Marianist, he walks free now in San Antonio , Texas .

Details: Bryan Bacon of Columbia MO 573 874 7777

Attorney Adam Horowitz and Jeff Herman of Miami 305 921 3300

Attorney Dan Craig of Kansas City 816 221 7772

TX – Fr. Anthony Gonzales

In March, a civil lawsuit against him was settled. He molested at least 15 girls and admits, under oath, fathering at least eight children. After one of his teenaged victims gave birth, Gonzales’ Oblate colleagues lied, telling her Gonzales had died. He abused, impregnated and then abandoned a teenager who was living with her mentally ill mother in an abandoned house in Houston .

Gonzales now lives in Taylor Texas (population 15,000) where his sister is the mayor.

Details: Attorney Tahira Khan Merritt of Dallas 214 503 7300

MO – Fr. Thomas M. Reardon

Reardon is the most widely accused predator priest in Missouri , who faces at least 20 accusers in civil lawsuits. He also has a counseling license and until recent years was seeing drug and alcohol-addicted teens as a therapist. Along with his colleague, Fr. Thomas O’Brien, he’s accused of holding wild, liquor-laden parties with teens at a remote lake house where perhaps dozens of boys were molested.

Details: Attorney Rebecca Randles of Kansas City 816 931 9900 work

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the nation’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We’ve been around for 19 years and have more than 8,000 members across the country. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers. Pope John Paul gets drawn into abuse scandal

When John Paul II died five years ago the crowd that packed St Peters Square for his funeral chanted Santo subito (Saint now)! in a spontaneous tribute to the charisma of the Polish pontiff. As the faithful marked the anniversary of John Pauls death on Good Friday, however,he was being drawn into the scandal over child abuse in the Catholic church that has confronted his successor,Benedict XVI,with the worst crisis of his reign.
Allegations that the late pontiff blocked an inquiry into a paedophile cardinal, promoted senior church figures despite accusations that they had molested boys and covered up innumerable cases of abuse during his 26-year papacy have cast a cloud over his path to sainthood. The most serious claims related to Cardinal Hans Hermann Groer,an Austrian friend of John Pauls who abused an estimated 2,000 boys over decades but never faced any sanction from Rome.
Cardinal Christoph Schnborn,Groers successor, criticised the handling of that scandal and other abuse cases last week after holding a special service in St Stephens cathedral,Vienna, entitled Admitting our guilt.
Schnborn condemned the sinful structures within the church and the patterns of silencing victims and looking away.Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger who became Pope Benedict had tried to investigate the abuses as head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, according to Schnborn. But his efforts had been blocked by the Vatican,an apparent reference to John Paul.Asked by The Sunday Times whether John Pauls role in the cover-up of abuse should be investigated,Schnborn said: I have known Pope Benedict personally during 37 years of amiable acquaintance and I can say with certainty that ... he made entirely clear efforts not to cover things up but to tackle and investigate them. This was not always met with approval in the Vatican.
The Groer affair became public in 1995 when former pupils of an elite Catholic school accused him of sexual abuse. After an outcry,Groer was replaced and made the prior of a convent.
He was never punished and issued only a vague apology in 1998 before retreating to a nunnery where he lived until his death.SUNDAY TIMES,LONDON

Vatican rallies behind Pope

Buffeted by sex abuse scandals, the Vatican kept up its stiff defence of Pope Benedict XVI on Sunday, hailing him at the start of Easter Mass as an unfailing and courageous leader of a flock that takes no heed of petty gossip. The surprise speech by Cardinal Angelo Sodano, dean of the College of Cardinals, was the first time in recent memory that the ritual of a papal Easter Sunday Mass was changed so someone could address the Pope at the start.Holy Father, the people of God are with you and will not let themselves be influenced by the petty gossip of the moment,by the trials that sometimes assail the community of believers, Sodano said.

Is this Pope John Paul II waving from beyond the grave? Vatican TV director says yes

By NICK PISA

Last updated at 21:21 15 October 2007

This fiery figure is being hailed as Pope John Paul II making an appearance beyond the grave.

The image, said by believers to show the Holy Father with his right hand raised in blessing, was spotted during a ceremony in Poland to mark the second anniversary of his death.

Details appeared on the Vatican News Service, a TV station in Rome which specialises in religious news broadcasts.

Service director Jarek Cielecki, a Polish priest and close friend of John Paul II, travelled to Poland after hearing an onlooker had photographed the image.

Father Cielecki said he was convinced the picture showed the former pontiff.

"You can see the image of a person in the flames and I think it is the servant of God, Pope John Paul II," he said.

The pictures were being broadcast continuously on Italian TV and also posted on religious websites, some of which crashed as thousands logged on to see for themselves the eerie figure formed by the flames.

The bonfire was lit during a service at Beskid Zywiecki, close to John Paul's birthplace at Katowice, southern Poland, on April 2 - the second anniversary of his death.

Hundreds had attended the ceremony. Gregorz Lukasik, the Polish man who took the photographs, said: "It was only afterwards when I got home and looked at the pictures that I realised I had something.

"I showed them to my brother and sister and they, like me, were convinced the flames had formed the image of Pope John Paul II.

"I was so happy with the picture that I showed it to our local bishop who said that Pope John Paul had made many pilgrimages during his life and he was still making them in death."

John Paul ‘ignored abuse of 2,000 boys’

CW.jpgWhen John Paul II died five years ago the crowd that packed St Peter’s Square for his funeral clamoured “Santo subito(Saint now)!” in a spontaneous tribute to the charisma of the Polish pontiff.

As the faithful marked the anniversary of John Paul’s death on Good Friday, however, he was being drawn into the scandal over child abuse in the Catholic church that has confronted his successor, Benedict XVI, with the worst crisis of his reign.

Allegations that the late pontiff blocked an inquiry into a paedophile cardinal, promoted senior church figures despite accusations that they had molested boys and covered up innumerable cases of abuse during his 26-year papacy have cast a cloud over his path to sainthood.

CW.jpgThe most serious claims related to Cardinal Hans Hermann Groer, an Austrian friend of John Paul’s who abused an estimated 2,000 boys over decades but never faced any sanction from Rome.

Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, Groer’s successor, criticised the handling of that scandal and other abuse cases last week after holding a special service in St Stephen’s cathedral, Vienna, entitled “Admitting our guilt”.

Schönborn condemned the “sinful structures” within the church and the patterns of “silencing” victims and “looking away”.

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger — who became Pope Benedict — had tried to investigate the abuses as head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, according to Schönborn. But his efforts had been blocked by “the Vatican”, an apparent reference to John Paul.

Asked by The Sunday Times whether John Paul’s role in the cover-up of abuse should be investigated, Schönborn said: “I have known Pope Benedict personally during 37 years of amiable acquaintance and I can say with certainty that ... he made entirely clear efforts not to cover things up but to tackle and investigate them. This was not always met with approval in the Vatican.”

The Groer affair became public in 1995 when former pupils of an elite Catholic school accused him of sexual abuse.

After an outcry, Groer was replaced and made the prior of a convent. He was never punished and issued only a vague apology in 1998 before retreating to a nunnery where he lived until his death in 2003. Some of his victims were offered “hush money” from the church.

Michael Tfirst, 54, one of Groer’s victims, claims to have reported the abuse to highranking church officials from the 1970s onwards. He says the church paid him £3,300 in 2004 under a contract that obliged him to keep quiet.

“There is no question that Ratzinger knew all the details of reports on abuse within the church, as there is no doubt that John Paul, his superior, took part in a massive and systematic cover-up,” Tfirst said.

John Paul also faced criticism last week from Poland for protecting Archbishop Juliusz Paetz, who was accused of abusing trainee priests. Letters detailing the charges were sent to John Paul’s office and to Ratzinger in 2000 but were ignored. Paetz resigned in 2002 when the allegations became public.

Stanislaw Obirek, a Polish theologian and a former Jesuit priest, said: “I believe John Paul is the key person responsible for the cover-up of abuse cases because most of it occurred during his papacy. How can someone who is to blame for this be beatified?”

In America critics pointed out that although Benedict has borne the brunt of criticism over ignoring the scandal of Father Lawrence Murphy, accused of molesting 200 deaf boys at a special school in Wisconsin, Ratzinger had acted on the authority of John Paul.

Another beneficiary of John Paul’s discreet approach was Marcial Maciel Degollado, a Mexican priest known as Father Maciel, who founded a conservative religious order. He was accused by former members of abuse in 1998. John Paul blessed Maciel in the Vatican in late 2004, at a time when Ratzinger was investigating him. A year after Ratzinger became pope, the Vatican ordered Maciel to lead “a reserved life of prayer and penance”, effectively removing him from power.

John Paul was also accused of ignoring controversy over John Magee, a former private secretary to three popes including the Polish pontiff, who named him Bishop of Cloyne in 1987. Late last month Magee was forced to resign after an independent report found that his diocese in Ireland had put children at risk.

In the Vatican the spiralling allegations have prompted a siege-like mentality. Father Federico Lombardi, Benedict’s spokesman, declined to comment on John Paul’s handling of abuse cases. “We’re busy with Easter celebrations, let’s focus on the homilies,” he said.

The Polish cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, John Paul’s private secretary for four decades, rejected as “unfair and misleading” any attempt to distinguish between the approaches of the two popes to abuse cases. “Benedict is strongly committed to clearing things up, like a father,” Dziwisz told La Repubblica, the Italian newspaper.

In Europe there are signs of the faithful turning their backs on the church in large numbers. In Austria alone more than 20,000 Catholics left the church in March.

In America there was a furious response by Jewish groups to a Good Friday sermon by Father Raniero Cantalamessa, Benedict’s personal preacher, in which he compared the wave of attacks on the church to anti-Semitism.

Rabbi Gary Greenebaum, of the American Jewish Committee, protested: “So far I haven’t seen Saint Peter burn. The Vatican is trying to turn the persecutors into victims.”

John Paul was expected to be beatified in October but the process may be delayed. A French nun who appeared to have been miraculously cured of Parkinson’s disease through his intercession has reportedly been found to be suffering from a different illness.

Giancarlo Zizola, a leading expert on the Vatican, said the church officials who had gathered documents and questioned witnesses about John Paul’s suitability for sainthood had examined “negative” aspects of his papacy, including his handling of abuse cases.

“There’s no chance of Benedict delaying the beatification because of the abuse scandal,” Zizola said. “On the contrary, I expect he’ll accelerate it.”

Allegations

Critics say John Paul II:

Failed to encourage bishops to report accusations of paedophilia by priests to the police.

Ignored accusations against senior members of the clergy, at times promoting them to higher office.

Allowed many priests accused of paedophilia to be transferred to a new diocese without anyone being warned of their record.

Decreed that “pontifical secrecy” must apply to cases of sexual abuse in church trials.
